    GM Ignition Problem

    Hey All,

I know this isn't a tri-five but my son's '94 pickup w/ 350 and GM HEI Ignition has been giving him trouble for years. He's tried replacing pretty much everything, but eventually the #4 stud on the dist cap as well as the inside of plug wire end gets corroded with white powder almost like corrosion on a battery cable. Anyone have any idea what causes this? Thanks for any help.

    Take Care

My first thought is water dripping on the cap/wire from a bad hood seal or something like that.

How often does he have to replace the cap/wire?

My experience with the old style big cap HEI was that something was going to happen every 50000/60000 miles requiring cap/rotor/plug wire/plug replacement. The 89-95 setup in a pickup was slightly better but not by much.

Troy, I believe Rick has it. Must be water leaking down onto it. Next time you replace cap, wires, etc...... Try some dielectric grease on terminals and see if that does it. Permatex #22058. You can probably find it in your local auto parts store, but here is a listing on Amazon.....

And of course, see if you can identify and replace the leaking hood or cowl seal as well.

Hope this gives you some ideas,

Thanks Guys, I'm not sure how often but it seems to be about 3-4 months. He's been using dielectric grease, it just seems that it's just that one terminal!! I haven't had a chance to give it a good look but I'm wondering if it's something with the rotor/stator or the guts of the distributor.

Troy, give Dave Ray a holler. He works on HEIs every day and may have run into this before......
