Been a lurker for some time

    Hello Trifivers,
Been using TriFive forums for years. Finally got serious about building my old 55 two door wagon and now need your expert advise.
The car: Had it for about 30 years. It has been a basket case since the day I brought it home. Now retired, its time to enjoy the build. First was a Paul Newman frame (about 15 years ago). I started with a 1987 305 TPI Z28 junk yard motor with 17K miles on it and a Camero 6 speed. After retirement, I sprung for a crate GM LS3 and six speed. With motor fit issues using the stock C4 Corvette suspension, I'm in the process of installing a 4 inch recessed fire wall. Next is AC...
I have always been a wagon guy (thanks Dad) and love the two door cars.
    Live in Morgan Hill Cal.

Welcome to the site. I'm surprised Newman set up the mounts so the engine interferes with the firewall. Are you using their LS mounts? If not, you can use various LS adapter mounts that might clear the stock firewall. They set the engine in different positions, and some are even adjustable. If you prefer the new smooth recessed firewall, I guess that's irrelevant.

    Hi Chevynut,
I had Newman do LS mounts in anticipation of an LS in the future. I bought his adapters to mount the TPI motor to the LS mounts. Also had him do cross member mounts for both the automatic and 6 spd trans. I'm not using his LS engine mount (to the block) as he is now out of business. I'm just using el cheapo biscuits.
By the way, the LS motor sits at about 8 degrees. Do you know if that is acceptable?

I don't think you'll get acceptable u-joint angles with the engine sitting at 8 degrees. We set our engines at 5.5 degrees and the pinion at 5.0 degrees.

I thought Newman used the stock C5 Corvette rubber mounts. I have some if you need them.

How far above the rack is your LS damper?

That's about where we put ours. Sounds like your tranny crossmember is way too low. I'd shim it up to a 5.5 degree engine angle RELATIVE TO THE FRAME. DO you have room in your tranny tunnel?
