    Vintage Air controls

Have any of you guys installed a Gen IV (servo) Vintage Air modified control panel in your 55 or 56? I modified mine per Vintage Air's instructions, and I can't for the life of me figure out how I'm supposed to get it back in the dash. With the long potentiometers hanging out there doesn't seem to be any way to install it. I've turned it every which way and it won't go in. WTH??

This is what the monstrosity looks like...

Looks to me like you have to remove the lower two pots and reinstall them under the dash once the unit is in place. The other way seems to be to install it from behind without the bezel in place, then install the bezel from the front.....but what a PITA that would be. The instructions don't say anything about it.

I feel your pain, which is why I hate working on "modern cars". I usually figure out how the hell they put it together, after I break something trying to get it apart.

I couldn't have it better myself, but *maybe* that means we both are old and impatient...

It’s been a little while, but I believe I had to remove the bezel, install the controls, then reinstall the bezel. I think that’s the only way the unit can be locked in place.

Was yours the servo-controlled Gen IV unit or the older cable-controlled unit? The hole in the dash is just barely big enough for the control panel, much less fitting it in there with all the pots hanging off of it. Once it's in it shouldn't be a problem....it's getting it through the hole.

I guess A/C is just "too modern" for some guys to bother with. LOL

Why is it difficult to remove the bezel? From the pic it just looks like the plastic knobs, and 4 screws.

The bezel is off (I have a new one ready) and a guy on FB confirmed that he installs them from behind the dash, then attaches the bezel. Vintage Air's instructions tell you to put the whole control panel together, then install it into the dash. I showed it to my son last night and I identified two ways that it could be done, one of which was to install it without the bezel, and the second was by removing the bottom pots and re-installing them after the unit was in the dash. Not sure which would be easier, but I'll use one or the other. Seems like VA should address this in their instructions.

I threw away the stock control panel and went with the VA 3 knob control panel.
Dave, from the old neighborhood in Jersey!
