    Tire sizing 57 Chevy

Current tire size is 225/50R 17. What is the tallest /diameter tire you can install on a stock 57 without clearance problems?

I would think, with the correct wheel offset and width, a 225/60-17 might work. It's 27.64 inches tall. Then there is the slightly wider 235/55-17 at 27.17 tall, or slightly shorter in a 225/55-17 at 26.77 inches.
The 225/50-17 is 25.91. A stock 7.50-14 is 27.2 inches tall, but with only an amazing 4.5 tread width. You just kind of need to eyeball what you have, and see how much to the radius/width of the tire you can add without rubbing, which is just half the diameter. You would also need a 7-7.5 inch wide wheel.

The 245/45-17's that so many cars seem to want to run on the front are only 25.7 inches tall, which are 1.5 inches shorter than stock. It doesn't exactly fill up the wheel well from the side profile. It might work, but it is the same tire used on the front of the much lower, lighter, smaller C5 Corvette, which isn't big enough.

The 225/50/17 should work with the correct wheel and brake package.

A 245/45-17 tire works well with a lowered car with the right suspension setup and wheels, not a stock height car or one that's been raised. I think these 245/45-17 front tires look great.....and they'll handle better than a 225 will. A C5 Corvette at 3250 pounds is not a "much lighter" car than a tri5 but even if it was it's irrelevant.
