Thanks fellas... then I spent all day yesterday (my birthday) and today installing my birthday present to myself: A mini-split heat pump / AC for my shop! I can't wait to get it operating (tomorrow morning) as it's getting VERY HOT (Summer) here now..

    Hi Bama,
I look forward to hearing how the mini-split works for you. We have no AC in our house (baseboard hot water heat, and some vaulted ceilings); each summer for a while, I have considered installing a mini-split.
    Regards, Doug

Thanks Fellas.. birthday (and mini-split install) is OVER for now.. and I'm very glad. I had an HVAC guy come by this morning to check over my physical install and hook up the freon lines, nitrogen purge, pull vacuum, etc and by 10:30 it was running and cooling. We also ran the heat function for a few minutes to generate pressure/temp numbers for the Install report, and then back to cooling.. After a couple hours of running while I had lunch and rested up, I just went to the shop and it was 'too cold' (73F) to work..

Here are a couple of photos after installation.
PS. The unit cost me $1340 shipped to me. I spent a day or two checking the unit physically, figuring out what was what and reading thru the install manual, Most of two days actually doing the physical install, and a half day today with the HVAC tech 'making sure' and he signed the install paperwork for me (I paid him $250 for that, and was glad to do that given I had none of the specialized equipment or knowledge). HVAC companies generally get around $1500 to completely install a minisplit in my area. Here's a couple of photos..

Nice! So what size of a unit is that?(specs please) and how many sq feet are you cooling with it (room size please).
I'm right behind you in finding and getting a new system for my recently built garage.
Thanks and happy birthday you old fart!

Thanks Paul. My shop/garage is 1176 sf (28x42x10); load calculations would lead you to a 2 ton unit, but I super insulated my garage including all doors and windows, 12" fiberglass in the attic, 4" in walls plus tyvek and 1/2 OSB inside and out, caulked/sealed all joints and painted, 2" gap between framed walls and limestone brick. So I chose an 18000 (1.5T)_ unit with 21 SEER. I think it will do fine for taking off the winter time chill and summer time sweat!

Very well done, Bama! I'm sure you will have many years of service from your new shop and garage. Your HVAC unit sounds interesting indeed. I will keep it in mind (when and if) I am able to construct my own dream garage as I have been wanting to do for a great many years now.

    Best regards,
