Sad Day for the US Navy

Been watching reports of the USS Bonhomme Richard that caught fire in port this morning. About 25 miles from there are could smell the aftermath. Very sad of an proud ship. Hopefully can get it out before total loss. Fingers crossed and prayers sent!

I agree, Slim. A fire aboard ship is no fun at all. Especially at sea. Been there, done that more than once. At least they were in port with minimal crew aboard when under maintenance. We'll have to wait and see what caused the explosion and fire. Lots of possibilities including hot work (welding or torch) igniting fumes in storage tanks. I'll bet you money one of the yard birds (civilian contract workers) screwed up and started it all, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Prayers for the full and speedy recovery of all affected,

And it might burn for days. They should tow it out to deep water, and sink it to get the fire out.
    I was a sailor on a WW2 destroyer in 72.

    Sub pier, San Diego, 1978......

Rescue Dog, my first instinct when I read your post was, 'Are you serious?' Then I read more about the ship and what is going on there (it is carrying 1 million gallons of fuel). Some of that is for the ship and some is for aircraft.

If that fuel goes up, it will probably blow out people's windows from LA to El Centro and even down in Ensenada, Mexico. So if they cannot put the fire out within another day or so and will have to scrap the ship anyway...... Your idea of towing her out to sea and sinking her in deep water might be the best way to go.

    Best regards,

    Harry

Local report said they expect have the fire out very soon. The other item of note, initial structure survey of the fire ravaged area was positive. Although won't know until everything is under control.

As well my hats is OFF to the Men and Women that have been battling this for the 4+ days. Know you sitting on a million gallons of fuel and if you don't do your job...greater fortitude then many. To that I say hearty Thank You and God Bless.

That's good news, Slim! I wonder if they will be able to pinpoint the source of the explosion? May have been a typical screw up by a yard bird doing hot work aboard a ship under maintenance.

Or it could be something else altogether. The Iranians have been making happy noises about this. Saying everything short of 'We did it!' Me...... I'd like to know.

They're having their own "mystery" problems...Ships burning, oil dumps blowing up, etc.
Those pesky Mousad actors, at it, again.
