How much smoke is too much?

Yesterday, I went to look at a 57 210 with the 283 and four barrel. There was smoke coming from the breather tube under the engine, which I understand can mean worn rings. But how much smoke is too much?

Smoke from the crankcase is caused by blowby......combustion products blowing past the rings. Check the compression in each cylinder and if it's good I wouldn't worry too much about it. You could always add a PCV valve if it bothers you.
