Question Stainless steel bolt grades & strength

Are stainless steel bolts stronger than a grade 5 or grade 8 bolt. Stainless bolts commonly are grade 18.8...is this number bolt strength or some type of corrosion rating

Common stainless bolts are generally not as strong as grade 8, but about as strong as Grade 5. 18-8 is the alloy (304), not grade (18% Cr and 8% Ni). There are some stainless steels that are very strong. ARP sells bolts that exceeed Grade 8 at 170,000 PSI strength. They are precipitation hardened 17-4 alloy.

Be careful where you use stainless bolts, and what type you use.
