View Full Version : Dash swap?

I've seen (and I can't remember where) a '57 with a 55/56 dash in it a few years ago. A few days ago, some one started a thread on the "other site" doing just that. I've been thinking about doing it myself. Yeah, I know my car is a long way from running, but I can dream, right?

I've always liked the look of the 55/56 dash and the available aftermarket options. Also, it seems folks wind up modifying the '57 column in some way depending on how they do their interior.

It looks like it's a pretty straightforward swap. I'm a ways off from being ready to do it, but almost have my self talked into it.

I like the idea never did like the 57 dash.

The 55-56 dash is one of the cool things about the cars. I love the double humps, and never understood why some guys cut the passenger side hump out. I guess just to be different.

I don't think the dash is a drop-in, although it should be close. The 57 windshield is somehow different than the 55-56, but I think the interior lower windshield trim is the same on all 3 years.

Whether your car is running or not, now is a good time to make the dash swap. It doesn't need to wait for anything else, and will give you something fun to work on. ;)

Indeed, the 57 cowl and windshield is lower than on 55-56. I don't know how this affects the dash though it's bound to.

One thing to remember is that the right hand drive 57s used a 55-56 dash - so it can't be all that big a deal to fit up. To me the big deal is cutting all those spot welds.

I'm keeping my eye on the thread on the other site. I also have heard of Aussies doing it when they import '57s as well.

I have not seen this mod to the 55/56 dash but it sounds hidious, the dash on these cars is one thing I cant tolerate screwing with on these cars.

Brian, I think markm was talking about removing the passenger side hump. ;)

I'll admit, I was just looking for an excuse to post that :)

The "straightness" of the 57 dash is one reason I'm thinking of swapping.

To each his own, but I'll agree, that just looks funny Withouth the hump.

I really didn't think I would like this but the more I look at it the more I like it....

That is exactly what I was talking about.

I don't think Brizio's dash looks "bad", in fact it looks pretty good if you didn't know the difference. But I think the stock double humps look a lot better.

I wonder where he got that long piece of dash trim. Maybe a custom made piece from Gene Smith or someone who makes those pieces?
