I have been talking to Sid off and on for a while now and he requested that I start this build thread. He feels it could be helpful to others. I don't know.lol But if the little I know can be of help to other rodders out there here you go. I'm copying these pics from another site so some things may be out of sequence.lol

Here is what I started with.
1958 Chevy Big Window I only bought it for the cab. I bought it from a guy that kept it
in a trailer park.

So I’ll start with the frame I install a Mustang II, 4 link and c-notched the rear of the frame.

I made a frame rotisserie out of two engine stands to get the frame ready for paint.

I had to modify the caliper bracket and the axles retainer to install my disc brakes. Here is what I came up with.

There was extensive rust damage on this cab but I wanted a big window cab and I had to have it.lol I should have waited because I ended up building a cab.lol I had to replace both cab corners, the steps and rockers, floors, and the roof.

After all this work I knew what I really wanted was a 55-56 truck. I have a 55 210 and I always wanted twins.lol

I decided to change the front clip to a 55. How it came about was a friend challenged me to fix some terrible 55 fenders and they came out nice so I said why not.

Anyway guys here is the boring stuff I've been working on but you said you wanted pics. I had to add some round tubing to the front the door to get it right. I think it will look decent once I grind down the welds and make it flow on the edge. Man the door fitment on these things leaves much to be desired.

This was my first time using this product, a buddy of mine told me to try it. I decided to try it on my dash to fill some minor imperfections. I could have used high build primer, but I wanted a reason to try this stuff. It sprayed great really smooth. I had to use a 2.2 tip that's how thick it is, but most of it will end up on the floor after block sanding, but man it's a great product. I liked it so much I did the roof also.

You can never have enough good fenders. I had a mess up fender laying around and a new repoped fender that someone gave me. The repop fender fitment was horrible so I decided to use it as a patch panel. I have a passenger fender that I already primed but when I checked the fitment I like the mess up fender a little better. So I decided to fix the fender and use which ever one I like the best when I put the truck back together. Or I just used it as an excuse to weld something together.lol

This is what is left of a new fender that I used for patch panels because the fitment was so bad. I used the rear for another fender for a buddy. It still has some use so I will not throw it out. It still has a good brace, eyebrow, and front and top panel. Somebody may need a piece of it so I will keep it. I know too many hotrodders to throw it out. I don't know about the other new fenders, but the fitment for this one was garbage.

Oh yeah I had to make a brace for the sectioned hood. I made it out of 1 inch wide and 1/4 thick flat stock. Making it flow with the radius of the side of the hood took some thought but it came out decent.

Well I decided to start getting the rear fenders ready for primer. I wanted to use these for the truck because they were giving to me by a buddy who bought new ones and he has passed away (He knew they were rough but did not want to throw them away). So I wanted something of his on the truck, so I went to through the trouble of saving them. My question is do you know what evils lives under your primer.
Bondo, bondo, bondo.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8157/6979642770_ddefcc30da.jpg

This is what was under all that bondo
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7081/6979642920_8ab42f9b11.jpg

This is what I had to cut away. Yikes
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7083/7125731839_9e0811fae8.jpg
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7059/6979643110_c76f350bfb.jpg
Yeah thats another fender in that background covered in bondo also.lol

I had some front fenders that I've been gutting that provided the majority of the patch panel. A little tweaking and they worked fine. That little rust spot that was left I just formed my hand.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8027/7125731323_048b8e4a51.jpg
I used a 3/32 2% ceriated tungsten and 1/16 filler rod and tried to keep the smallest HAZ I could. Tig sheetmetal is great you can see how low the bead profile is and some of the metal finishing I started. Man you can hammer and dolly that HAZ to your hearts desire.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8165/7149105631_f79628b590.jpg
And here it is, almost ready for primer a little more welding and hammer and dolly work to do and very little filler will be needed now.lol

Over this years these trucks were really used and used hard.lol Man this fender has dents and digs all alone the top area. I used a big red marker to color in the top which I will block sand to see the highs and lows.

After sanding here is what I had
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7263/7003015760_19068e02bd.jpg
After the first use of my slapper and dolly I sanded again and here what I have. As you can see the low area is getting smaller. Sanding between hammer and dolly work shows me were I need to concentrate.
http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5337/7003016094_3ecf1c6026.jpg
Worked some more and sanded and had this.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8146/7003017584_a8c639119a.jpg
Here what I accomplished the first day, still a lot of work to do but a fender that most would have trashed or covered with way too much filler will be used with very little filler when done. After I remove all the major of the dents I will red marker again and try to fix all the imperfections. All the red markets that are left need to be worked but as you can see there is a world of difference.

I just wanted to share my experience with Raptor Liner with you guys. Its my first time using this product and I must say I really like it. Its very easy to use and sprays great and was exactly what I was looking for. It dries fairly fast and looks good. I used it on the floor and the bottom of the toe board. It seams very durable so for people looking for something like this you can't beat it. I bought the 4 bottle kit, it comes with the hardener and the gun. I got mine on ebay.
I will also be spraying it on the interior floor.

I sprayed a test panel (glove box door) to see if I really like the color I picked for the truck. I showed it to the wifey to get her opinion. She likes it a lot and so do I. This will be the color of the truck if I can shoot it before I change my mind.lol I’m usually conservative in my color choice but I thought the truck needed some pop.

I knew I had to raise my bed floor 2 inches due to my c-notches. I was looking in metal yard for some scrape tubing and I could not find anything I liked, I decided to make my own 2 inch spacers. I try to keep things simple it makes life easier, but of course I will have to move the angle strips on the bed up 2 inches so that bed sits in the same spot as factory.
I will use the bolt to hold the washers in place and then weld it together.

Before I mount the bed I have to move the angle strips up two inches and bed should fit like factory but the floor will be two inches higher.

I had to stop working on the truck at this point due to my wifes honey do list. I'm remodeling a bathroom but if I do anything of note I will be sure to post.

I forgot to post a little about the 55 210. I've had the car since 2003. It has a 454 Fuel Injected engine, 700r4 Trans, Ford 9inch, Heidts drop spindles, 605 power steering, leaf springs pocket kit, 18x7 and 18x 10 wheels.

Here are more pics of it.

Not really much to report but I did get to do a little this weekend. I welded up all the interior seams and grind them smooth to give it that smooth and finished look that was lacking from the factory. I got it in primer and now it needs to be blocked sanded. I'm happy with the look so far. It was a lot of work but I've been told many times that the devil is in the details.

Well I still working on the bathroom but its getting there.
I gutted the complete shower and hug up all new backerboard and tile. The original shower had tile with a 1 1/2 inch thick cement bed on all 4 walls, floor, and curb, the bathroom floor was the same. That was the hard work. Well some have been asking me me about it so heres some pics. I still have a lot of work to do.

Anyway I had a little time recently some I decided I would smooth my front bumper. Its an aftermarket bumper from LMC Trucks. There are many ways to do this but this is just the route I took.
First I started off by grinding the head off the bolts.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7437/10478738974_386b86c2f0.jpg
http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2812/10478863243_4c3ec21188.jpg
Then I made some plates and tap them to weld on the inside of the bumper. Why? Because I wanted to spread the load when I torqued down the nut once installed. I have seen dimples on smooth bumpers when the bolts are. I think spreading the load will stop this.
http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2891/10478862143_e2639549d4.jpg
http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2810/10478672525_b12e381ca9.jpg
I then install the bolts and screwed the plates down tight for welding.
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3743/10478672245_ec39034d54.jpg
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3805/10556512963_8b98c410b8.jpg
Then I flip the bumper over and grinded the head as low as I could before touching the surrounding metal. I then used a hand file to shape the bolt with the contour of the bumper.

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2883/10478857683_ff52b4b6ca.jpg
I then welded the bolt and used a hand file to smooth the weld.
http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5540/10478856123_1f2dcce1ae.jpg

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5486/10494746944_a6bb5f1da9.jpg

Also doing it this way I also need to make a minor modification to the bumper bracket I will post pics when I get a chance.

Bam, I don't understand what you're trying to do with the plates. I don't see how they spread the load when the head of the bolt is welded to the bumper anyhow. If you had welded the bolts to the square plates, then the plates to the bumper it would help spread the load. But to me welding the square stub of the bolt to the bumper defeats the purpose.

I know you said there's a lot of ways to do this....I did it differently and I think it essentially eliminates the possibility of distortion from the bolt head.

Here's a couple pics showing what I did. I made brackets that capture the heads of the bolts, and use them to clamp the bumper to the braces. This is the same way the aftermarket smoothies are done.

First the square in from the bolt will not fit through the holes on the plates, second bolts are screws through the plates. The plates basically act as a flat nut which is weld to the bumper. Most people do the same thing with washers they would weld a washer to the bolt and the bumper. I just chose to tap a flat piece and weld. I always done it this way and never had an issue with over time seeing the dimples where the bolts are. Thats all just a creature of habit

Yeah that concrete lasted for over 60 years so there is not doubt those guys built stuff to last back then. Let me tell you digging it out was a bigger job than putting things back together. Damn Bam the bathroom look's killer. I like what you'er doing to the jam's been doin some of the same with the GMC.

Yeah I'm happy with how the bathroom came out, but more importantly the wife is.lol It was a lot of work but well worth it.

Yeah man I like those smooth seams also, I think it gives the truck a more finished look.

That sure is going to be one awesome truck! You were right about the production tolerances! I had several I missed when I did mine. I really enjoyed the photos, and love what you did with the dash and fenders. The 5.3 is a perfect choice, too. Great power and mileage to boot! Keep up the good work, and the pics, too!

Thanks man I really appreciate it. I've been doing a lot of priming and sanding trying to get the cab ready for paint. But with kids and their events its hard to get enough truck time. But it will get done.

Bam. did you have your 55 at Pomona on diplay last weekend? If not there was a pretty close twin there to it.

Not really any updates. I've just been priming and blocking when I have time. Man I'm trying to get it ready for paint. The color? I orginally was going to paint to burnt orange or bronze but I started seeing too many trucks that color. So I changed my plan and went green. I still plan to paint it that metallic green I posted a test panel of and saddle tan interior. Here is the pic of the green.

Thanks guys. I was a little nervous about the green. I'm usually way more conservative when it comes to colors but I thought the truck needed a color that popped a bit more. Something other than what I would normally choose. Once I shot the interior I became way more confident in the color choice and actually love it now.

Sid I never have a problem doing what I like.lol

The truck will be all green. Personally I don't care for most 2 tones on these trucks, the body line and the rear fender lines make them look funny in my opinion. The two tones look much better on cameo than step side trucks, but that's just my opinion. Now saying that I seen some really nice two tone step sides but its not for me.

Now as for silver outside, I'm not interested. If I wanted it silver I would have just painted it silver because that is originally what I thought I was going to do. But I just grew so tired of greys and silvers, they are beautiful I've just had too many cars in that family of color or shades. The 55 sedan will be repainted also I'm tired of the color.

The truck will be green no emblems and the only chrome will be the front bumper/ grill/ outside swan mirrors and head light bezels.

Color is looking good, props for having the kahunas to pick such an "in your face" color. IMO this green should be the one and only color on the truck. It needs to grab you attention when you look at it, and any chrome or stainless accents will set it off nicely. Two tone would distract from that..

Yes. I thought the truck needed an in your face color because of the street machine look I'm going for. After all the little custom touches and low stance, I thought an in your face color would set it off. It was going to be burnt orange but everybody seems to be going there (its becoming as common as red trifives around here) and I wanted to be a little different and not play it so safe. But to tone it down and paint it silver would defeat the purpose of why I went green in the first place. Silver cars and trucks are beautiful no doubt about that, but I wanted something that pops.

I agree with you on the 57 I think they look better one color. I like the 55/56 two toned or one solid color but the 57 looks better one color in my opinion.

Thanks man. I had to some a lot of slicing and dicing to make it flow they way I wanted but it was not too bad. I did not have the narrowing it though. I had to relief cut the both humps and taper them down and I made the panels on the side to flow into the A pillers. With a 37 I think you will have to narrow it but it would be no problems with your skills.

Nice work Bam. I installed one of those crossmembers in a 57 frame several years ago. The only downside I saw is that it limits exhaust diameter, but if you're going with 2-2.5" you're probably ok. I don't think 3" will fit.

I know what you mean about changing stuff. I'm in the process of re-doing my rear shock mounts right now to decrease the shock angle. There's some other changes I've considered, but I'm not going there. :p

BAM55
03-20-2015, 11:44 AM
Chevynut I can't run exhaust through the x member unless I move my brake assembly to the firewall. I don't think I'm willing to do that I like a clean firewall and wanted my frame mount brake for the truck. The exhaust will most likely be under the x member, but who knows I've been know to change things.lol. By the way I will be running 2.5 exhaust.

chevynut
03-20-2015, 02:03 PM
Can you run it inside the crossmember, next to your tranny? Seems like maybe there's more room there.

Once I get everything back together I could try to see if there is room. We all know we can figure things out once mock up is done. So I will only give up on the idea once I convince myself it can't be done.lol I'm only preparing myself for the worst case scenario.

The set back of installing the x member means I can no longer use the factory brake assembly. So here is my brake bracket I fabricated. As you can see I also had to notch the frame to have clearance for the Hydroboost unit.

Here is the piece I fabricated for the pedal assembly.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8695/16787333528_380ea6c964.jpg
After a lot of measuring here it is tacked in place. I'm going to leave it tacked until the cab is
back on the frame, because I may have to move it a little bit.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8734/16973700712_29f3b4d927.jpg
Here is the pedal installed. Yes the push rod connection clears the bottom tube by about 1/2 inch.
As you can see I need to make or purchase a longer push rod extension.

Ales

I done my chassis work with a Hobart 180, any 220 volt weld would do the job just fine. As for my firewall I did not purchase it I just used some scrape metal I have laying around.

Here is what I did.
First I cut out the sections to be replaced

https://farm7.staticflickr.com/6081/6128456014_d868a50c74.jpg
https://farm7.staticflickr.com/6193/6128456070_f14bc2db88.jpg

Cut and welded in the replacement panels and grind the welds smooth.
https://farm7.staticflickr.com/6085/6128456100_53749bc92a.jpg

I later made another change to it after seeing it at a show. That was to cut the lip off also, I had to fill that with a home made patch so it looks like this before primer.

I wish you would Start to post again as I would really love to sea the truck finished and it only lets the small percent of humans that are lost win. Thanks for all the help you have given me. Sincerely,Joe Shufelt

Hey Sid I just wanted to show you some pics of the truck now that I'm driving it and its basically finished. I still have to do door and kick panels.
I've been driving it for about two months now and working the kinks and its been a blast.
I had it dyno tune to dial in the LS motor and it made 325 hp and 327 lbs of torque at the rear.

Here are some shots yeah I changed it to a Fleetside when the panels became available.

The bed is completely welded together so that no bolts show. I made that inside panels to give it a smooth look.
The tubs are trailer fenders I bought on ebay and I made the angle strips that flow back into the bed.
I also cut and milled and the wood for the bed myself because I did not care for how busy the stock wood is.

I hate when people leave build threads and never show the finished product. So here is that update.

Nice, I love big window '55-57 trucks!~ But I prefer original step side bed to a later fleetside bed.

The color reminds me of the 'Watemelon' truck... for those of you that remember seeing it? :)

The Electric Windows are installed and working properly. I had the glass custom cut to a template I made. The store bought glass just did not fit to my liking. The fits great now.
