    Water Pumps/BBC

One thing i have forgotten about sourcing is a water pump for my 540 BBC. I plan on running a serpentine system and will have the radiator located in the six cylinder position ( radiator not purchased yet, will be PRC) what brands are best for my buck i am not worried so much about saving money but more concerned about quality and durability, also i think it would make sense to run a short pump?

I think this is the one they run on the 502 GM #19168602 but i am thinking this is not going to work with serpentine belt system? looks to me like this is for a v-belt and i am hearing v-belts are getting hard to find??? anyone know if that is true.

If you go serpentine then the water pump would need to reverse in operation correct? also this is a short water pump which i would think is going to be needed for clearance?

You need to buy or at least decide on which serpentine system you'll use first to make certain you get the correct pump for that system.

Its going to be some sort of aftermarket setup because swp disappeared long before serp. setups. I have a buddy who always asks me when he sees me worling one of my cars if I am going to put FI and a serp setup just to piss me off.

This probably where i am going to need my most help deciding to use a water pump.

From what i have heard out there in the hobby world is going with the short pump would be best for clearance but the downside is not many serpentine systems work with a short water pump??? or not many manufacutered to work with the short pump.

I did mention that when i reach the stage of build to purchase i would go with a radiator that utilizes the six cylinder position so that gives me some space but not sure if it is enough with long pump?

Definitely go with a short pump...what does a long one gain you? It's just less space. I went with an Edelbrock reverse rotation pump.

I went with a Stewart high performance short water pump and got their stage III which is rebuildable. I am running normal direction with a serpentine kit from March performance. Enough clearance for the dual fans on a PRC radiator and it keeps the big inch motor cool at all times. Running one fan in traffic and it's creep into the 190's. Flip the second one on and it'll drop to the 170's in a hurry.
