View Full Version : Welder Cart
For those in a similar boat as me, shop space is a premium, so anything that can be done to consolidate is a bonus. 10 lbs. of.....well, you know.. I recently sold my L-Tec welder, and replaced it with a Miller 211. Yes, the Migmaster 250 has left the building.....
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture179.jpg
Sold it on CL, where the old machine was a two-story deal, the new one will be a three story. In order to take up less floor space, I need to incorporate the Miller 211, the Hypertherm Tig, and the Snap On dent puller, and two bottles:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1501.jpg
Starting with the base, some 1-1/2 square tubing makes up the frame. This stuff was free, and as with most free stuff, it isn't. Kyle spent a bit of the time in the shop media blasting rusty square tubing that has been sitting outdoors for a number of years. He also learned a bit more of mig welding..
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1502.jpg
The Tig will go on the bottom, and it has some mounting holes on the bottom side...
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1503.jpg
So some 3/4 square stock was used to make some rails for the Tig, along with some holes to tie in the front end..
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1504.jpg
Next, adding the front casters.....
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1509.jpg
A cross brace was added under the center line of each of the 2 bottles...
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1512.jpg
12 gauge will be used to form a tray under the bottles...
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1513.jpg
Support bracket added for Mig welder:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1511.jpg
The rear axle was made from a piece of angle and two 3/4-10 bolts..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1523.jpg
Rear bottle tray made from some 12 gauge, and welded on using about 3/8 diameter plug welds..
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1528.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1530.jpg
Top shelf added along with some gussets made of 12 gauge..
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1533.jpg
Bottle relief and pull handle added....
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1532.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1534.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1536.jpg
Added these studs to make use of the bottle bracket that came off the old welder. My brother in law had borrowed it at one time, and it came back with the fancy bracket. He retired the ratchet strap I had around the two bottles. This worked pretty well, so rather than reinvent the wheel.... Reminds me, I have some other things needing finishing I should lend him...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1540.jpg
Then a bracket for the clip is added to hold the Mig torch..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1551.jpg
.....and a test fit before we throw some paint on it...

Looks like I have some room left, may have to add one more.... To be continued.

Great concept. A bit narrow for my liking (almost a 3 wheeler) and possibly top heavy. Changing out bottle closest to the rack looks to be a time thing for me but certainly overall gets the job done!!!
It primarily stays in the shop on concrete, once the two bottles are sitting over the rear wheels it's pretty stable. 12 x 40 footprint on the bottom base.
OK, one last welder to add and I promise I'm done...

Now to disassemble and paint it...

That sure gets the job done and frees up some valuable space. Great job spelling it out for us all Robert. We appreciate that. Most of us are visual...so a lot of pics is super.
Thanks for the comments guys!
Tonight I got busy adding some color to the welding cart. It was a toss up between some bright red (HD color) which was acrylic lacquer, or a bright yellow (H/K Lemon Yellow basecoat). As I didn't have any lacquer thinner in stock for the red, yellow it is...followed by clearcoat

Along with the purple E-wheel, this should help to brighten up the shop!

Only Robert could have a welding cart that looks like it should go on the show circuit before using :) Looking good mp&c.
Is that safety yellow? lol; looks good!

I like some of the details you built, like the cable hangers.
I go crazy when I see someone post that they just bought a new welder and ask what cart they should buy. Well you just bought a welder stupid, why not test drive it by making a cart?
JT, it's House of Kolor Lemon Yellow.
Rick, don't think I showed these but also welded on rings to hold TIG rod tubes....
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1576.jpg
Okay, got things together today. Here's the total conglomeration...

Welded rings to hold the Tig rod tubes......

Retaining clip so the Mig torch doesn't have to lay on the floor...

As you can see, not much for wasted space. Here's the outlet box for the Mig....
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1587.jpg
and Tig.....

Bottle bracket.....
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/McCartney%20Paint%20and%20Custom-Shop%20Eqpt/Picture1582.jpg
I did give it a good shove to see how top heavy it was, and with the two bottles directly over the rear wheels it's very stable. Don't think I'll need worry about any accidental turnovers...

No doubt on the ASG plants and demand being big in Houston. Industrial gases are everywhere for the refineries, chemical plants, and construction. Seems like there's an industrial gas distributor on every corner except on the far west side where I am.
