I went to visit my interior guy yesterday and we looked at some more leather and headliner samples. He's really good with colors and I liked his range of samples he had me look at. Given that the exterior of my car will be orange and some sort of off-white or beige in the rear and the interior will have some charcoal leather accents, I decided to abandon the beige/tan interior leather color and opt for something that complements the orange exterior better. This will eliminate my having to somehow coordinate the exterior beige/off-white paint with the interior color. We also decided to change the headliner from charcoal to an orangeish wool. I still think the headliner will contrast the chrome bows great, and it will lighten up the interior. There will still be plenty of charcoal on the floor, on the door panels, and in the cargo area.

So now the plan is, from left to right sitting on the exterior color panel...

Charcoal wool carpet (also at bottom 4-5" of doors), charcoal 3-pt. seatbelts, interior orange/tan leather (two choices to pick from but most likely the darker one), orange/tan wool headliner. The dash will be charcoal padded leather on top, but I'm not sure what color the bottom will be (may bring some orange into the car). The beltline trim will either be painted charcoal with matte clear, or covered with charcoal leather.

The seatbelt webbing really match better than the pics show. It's hard to get the right colors with the camera, but you get the idea. I've been contemplating this change for a while now. Here's the prior colors I was considering:

So now I may bring some of the car's rear color or interior charcoal color into the engine compartment. Still have to figure that out. We also decided that an orange frame would work best since the charcoal is only an accent color...at least that has always been my intention.

Man the months fly by.

Just went down to visit my upholstery guy to look at the estimate on my interior materials. Holy cow....sticker shock :(. I'm planning to use some perforated leather and there's a $385 setup charge no matter how much you want done, and $6 per square foot. One hide is 50 square feet and I think you have to do 1/2 hide increments as they can only work with half hides. The leather is $1150 a hide (he uses only top quality Italian leather), so half a hide of perforated leather is $1110 or $44 a square foot plus shipping! :p

I'm using Mercedes wool headliner and Mercedes wool velour carpet which is not inexpensive either, but the total is relatively small compared to the leather.

He told me he has a few hides of a slightly darker orange/tan leather (used in Ferraris) than I picked out on hand and he would sell them to me for $850 each. I'm trying to decide if I want to do that or not. It might actually match my exterior color a little better.

The good news is that the labor is already "paid" for. :)

Here's the two colors....in the sun and shade..

He needs to the engine is dated lol. It was the cats meow 15 years ago when he started lol.

I really like the new interior colors!!!!!

similar to what the used in this truck. They used a dark redish leather to highlight.

I thought he was going with gray. I hate saddle or tan interiors, every car I ever had with one got changed. My Z28 was that way and so was my old 70 SS 454 Chevelle.

I was going with a gray-beige originally but it's so "70's". I updated it almost a year ago to better go with my exterior color and give a little more pizzaz! The problem I was running into was trying to reconcile the gray-beige with my two exterior colors and going to an orange-tan helped that.

Where have you been? :)

I think there's quite a bit of difference between a crappy 70's vinyl interior and high quality Italian leather. I wasn't sure about the change in color until I saw some high-end cars with it.

Actually my Z28 is a Type LT which did not have the same interior as a typical Camaro. Seats had a corduroy inserts as well as Door panels. Those interiors remind me of my Moms Caddy.

Yep, Caddy interiors are really nice. My seats are out of a Caddy. ;)

I've always liked the 55 waffle interiors. Bucket seats with that material might look pretty cool.

You can get leather in a waffle pattern lol. Actually might look good as a accent some how in your modern design. I like the perf I have perf in the cushion areas of my cutlass. Are you planning the darker color as the dominant or the lighter color. Both will look great with your color sceme.

chevynut

The orange-tan is the dominant color and the charcoal is the accent. Most of the cargo area will be charcoal, with most of the seating area being tan. The top of the dash, top of the doors, and all the beltline interior trim will be charcoal leather. He tells me he can cover all the interior moldings with leather with no problem. The carpet will be charcoal wool. My interior guy says 7 hides for the whole car plus 6 yards headliner and 8 yards of carpet. He thinks we need 1.5 hides perforated but I think we need half of that assuming zero waste, so 1 full hide should do it. I measured every part so I think I'm being conservative. He thinks it's half orange and half charcoal, but I think it's 2/3 orange and 1/3 or so charcoal. He's the expert, but I've put a tape to it and put it all in a spreadsheet. The only thing I am unsure of is layout issues and waste. ;)

I've seen all kinds of embossed leathers and the waffle would be cool if it was a 55. I decided to do something different in the area above the armrests, and that's perforations.

He is right about the leather stretched over the moldings. My son does upholstery and learned how to use the monkey snot glue working at a place that built helicpter interiors. Its amazing how they can fit around almost anything. Are you going to pad the dash with leather to match moldings?

chevynut
01-16-2016, 08:03 AM
Yes the dash will be padded charcoal leather. My interior guy does a lot of work on aircraft at DIA too. I don't know how he plans to get the leather around the ends of the moldings, especially at the door and tailgate openings. The big casting at the bottom of the liftgate looks tough to me but he says he can do it. If that turns out to be impossible the moldings will be painted charcoal like the bottom of the dash.

This Sid Chavers interior is the exact same color leather as my lighter sample above. Notice the padded dash... I can't tell if the beltline moldings are covered. My carpet will be a little lighter charcoal and I noticed he used the tan around the edges of the carpet for the mats and elsewhere which is interesting. I'm hoping I don't have too much charcoal.

Have you picked out an instrument panel yet?

I was wanting one of the custom factory looking 140 mph versions with full guage sweep but guy on the other site ordered one took 21 months to deliver. I hope he doesnt have service issues with it...

I'm going with Dakota Digital VHX instruments with black face and white LEDs. I don't like either the red or blue LEDs. I was considering the carbon fiber face but they don't offer it with white LEDs for some reason. One DD guy I talked to at SEMA told me they don't offer it because it doesn't look good.

This is the same car I posted above. It has a vdx gauge but they customized its color to match the interior somehow.

Those looks like the silver faced VHX gauges to me. I think Dakota Digital has the best set of gauges on the market. I don't think anyone else makes back-lit stepper motor gauges with a programmable information center and expansion modules. I like the matching clocks too.

Well I did a pretty detailed compilation of materials and figured 10-20% waste depending on material. I got 8 yards of carpet (60" wide), 5 yards of headliner (54" wide), 1 hide of perforated leather, 3.5 hides of non-perforated orange/tan leather, and 2 hides of charcoal leather for a total of 6.5 hides. My measurements were conservative and I planned for 20% waste on the leather which I think is high, knowing Larry ;).

I really don't see a lot of difference between my Nomad and a 57 Hardtop with a fully upholstered trunk. The carpet is almost identical, the headliner is less than one yard more (24" in length), and the trunk is about the same size as my Nomad cargo area. I have a seat structure almost identical to a package tray. My numbers come up 1/2 hide larger than for a 57 HT which seems very reasonable to me.
