View Full Version : Factory Electric Wiper Motor - Questions;

My 55 Nomad didn't have a wiper motor or vacuum for that matter when I purchased it to restore. I had an old electric motor from a long time ago when I had a 55 hardtop but it wasn't working so I just purchased a factory electric motor and have a couple questions.

1- My old motor didn't have the little round piece that looks like a vacuum line might attach??? I notice that some electric motors don't have this part? Is that for a vacuum line, if not what?
2- I have installed a new wiring kit from AAW and it has a white wire from the control knob to the wiper motor. The "hot" wire coming off the motor should connect to that white wire from the wiper control knob right?
3- Where does that hot wire coming out of the wiper motor normally connect in a stock factory set up? The ballast resistor??? I included some photos...

Thanks for any help, greatly appreciated!

Factory wiper has a brown wire that hooks to 12V side of ballast Res. You need a cable to turn the OEM moter on. I believe the hose fitting on those electric moters so equipped is for pumping washer fluid.

I have an original electric wiper motor in my 55. If I remember right there is a short black wire for ground that goes under a mount bracket screw and the other for power to the ballast resistor (or any other 12v ignition source would work, my ballast resistor is non functional because it's not needed with electronic ingnition. I just left it there for a connection point) The wipers are turned on and off with a cable that runs from the dash to the slide switch on the motor. It doesn't work very well though. Fortunately I don't need to use the wiper very often. A friend of mine just uses rain x on his 57, He doesn't even have the wiper arms on his car.

Thanks guys - I do have the cable from the dash switch all ready to hook in to the plastic slide piece, just wasn't sure if the brown wire did indeed tie into the ballast resistor. I guess I don't need the white wire from the wiring kit at all then.

thanks again,
Tony

When I think about it the white wires might be for lights. My dash wiper switch has a center button and hook ups for vacuum lines but my wiper motor doesn't. I don't know if the white wire would have anything to do with the winshield washer or not.

This white wire (American Autowire Kit) is for the electric wiper motor and it comes from the fuse box. The ballast resistor isn't fused so it is better to hook up the white wire to the brown or "hot wire" on the motor instead of hooking it up to the ballast resistor. I just finished the install and it is working great...
