Cody Walls drove down from Delaware today so we could punch louvers in the hood sides for 35 Chevy he's been working on, see some of his beautiful work here...

http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/cody-walls-builds-a-35-chevy.976318/

After using the samples we punched last month, Cody wanted to run one more test sample with larger louvers to check the flow against where the headlight lines up. Here Cody and Kyle wheel a new test sample...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture%203827.jpg

Using the Lennox to punch the louvers, stops were riveted in place.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture%203829.jpg

Clamped to the hood side, we decided on a slightly larger, with more to be added at the rear than the front..

The Driver's hood side takes it's turn...

Damn that's some cool stuff. How do you get the different lengths? Is there more than one die?

MP&C
12-12-2015, 07:24 PM
The die is made for a reciprocating machine, with open ends to make the louver whatever length you wish. On the last pass, you rotate the handle in the front around to "coin" the ends..

The angle pieces riveted on in the previous post act as the stops..

For those that followed the Louver job on the 35 Chevy hood sides, Cody Walls (the builder) and Dave Thomas (the owner) will at the Grand National Roadster Show Jan 29-31. The 35 will be the feature car in The Rodder's Journal booth in building 4, so if you're going be sure to stop by and check out Cody's craftsmanship and attention to detail.. absolutely beautiful car..

TRJ will also have a full feature article in the next issue.

Well soon after the 35 Chevy returned from GNRS, Cody had it blown apart again to tackle more items on the to-do list.. One of them being inner fenders, which he had asked if we would punch some louvers in those as well. He hand fabricated these parts, seen here:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/35ChevyInnerFender1.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/35ChevyInnerFender2.jpg

He had quite a bit of work in these and had suggested shipping them down, but we aren't that far apart so I suggested meeting in the middle to pass off the parts rather than trust them to shipping. So we guessed on Parole, MD as being close to a good midpoint, and picked the Double TT Diner to grab some breakfast and catch up on his trip to Pomona. Kyle and I arrived and had made about one lap through the parking lot when Cody pulled in, so this worked to be a good halfway point between Southern MD and Milford DE.

Here's what we picked up....

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture%204174.jpg

This has a tighter radius than what we had done for the hood sides, so for the punch to better follow the contour, or sit perpendicular to the point of punch, we plan on a rotational fixture attached to the linear slide that the "trough" of the inner fender can be rolled from side to side.. and just in time, the Mini Cooper wheel bearing/hub assembly had come in yesterday (looks like this)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture%204186.jpg
....so the first order of business was to void the warranty. Made a trip over to David's shop to make sure the press was still operational, and pressed the hub out of the bearing. We need a flat surface for the new material clamps, so Kyle worked on the lathe to get rid of the excess metal here:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture%204188.jpg

He got this far tonight...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture%204181.jpg

These are the new clamps we'll be using, the single 8mm bolt will connect it to the flange Kyle it working on..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture%204187.jpg

Meanwhile, I cut out the plate to hold the bearing...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture%204183.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture%204184.jpg

The top will be folded 90* and that flange bolted to the top of the glide blocks here...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture%204185.jpg

Once complete this should allow us to rotate the inner fenders as we punch the louvers.

Meanwhile I got the holes (and some spares for height adjustment) drilled in the wheel hub flange...

We used a "squaring plate" to align the panel for louver angle..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture%204214.jpg

The punch needed some relieving to insure the corners didn't hit the inside radius of the panel...

We have some more relieving to do on the tooling to eliminate some marking, then we'll do one more practice piece before breaking into the good stuff..

some pictures this morning. Here's a shot of the passenger side installed.. It
was nice to take on a challenge like this and see it actually work.. :)

Well Cody posted up some pics today of the muffler "wrap" so I thought I'd add them here as a follow up for those that saw the post of us punching the stainless.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/1935%20Chevy%20by%20Cody%20Walls/Picture%204410.jpg

He's using stainless exhaust front to back, with two transverse mounted mufflers behind the rear axle. Since they are tucked up inside the frame rails, a bit of air flow will be provided by the louvers..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/1935%20Chevy%20by%20Cody%20Walls/MufflerWrap1.jpg

Note the "rolled" edge on the exhaust tail pipes. Cody says he isn't a fan of unfinished edges, and this car is loaded with such detail from one end to the other.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/1935%20Chevy%20by%20Cody%20Walls/MufflerWrap2.jpg

Installed, the louvers facing the front should give nice air flow.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/1935%20Chevy%20by%20Cody%20Walls/MufflerWrap3.jpg

We've got another detail to work on with Cody, and it's been a nice change of pace to set the rusty metal aside and help out on his build with the louvers we've done. Thanks for the challenge!

Cody travelled down today from Milton DE so we could add some bead detail surrounding the louvers on the hood sides.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/1935%20Chevy%20by%20Cody%20Walls/Picture%204693.jpg

He used a paper pattern to copy the louver layout from the hood sides, and then added the offset for the bead location.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/1935%20Chevy%20by%20Cody%20Walls/Picture%204694.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/1935%20Chevy%20by%20Cody%20Walls/Picture%204695.jpg

While he was doing that Kyle and I added the rounded bead detail to the louver panels for the Wheeling Machine, here using a fancy clamp-on guide...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture%204690.jpg

Beaded....

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture%204691.jpg

Motion picture of same..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcPpwUF5yvI

Excess flange is trimmed to the bead edge...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture%204692.jpg

This should give a more finished edge when attached to the cast legs...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/IMG_1400.jpg

Once Cody was done with the layout and transferred it to some 1/2" thick MDF, it was cut out on the fancy vice jigsaw...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/1935%20Chevy%20by%20Cody%20Walls/Picture%204696.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204653.jpg

The corners were dressed with a 1-1/2" diameter drum sander and all the other edges filed to remove any imperfections that may alter the course of the beading dies. Then a sample of 18 gauge was clamped and run through the dies to insure the corners wanted to play nicely... The dies in the Lennox were changed to the flat upper for a flatter bead profile.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/1935%20Chevy%20by%20Cody%20Walls/Picture%204686.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/1935%20Chevy%20by%20Cody%20Walls/Picture%204701.jpg

With that looking good, the MDF guide was located on the hood side, clamped temporarily with some vise grips, and drilled for 8-32 machine screws to secure it in place..

Beautiful car, and I love the color too. The workmanship is incredible, especially the hood :). But the interior is lacking, imo, and why would anyone these days pick a SBC with carburetors on it? I know it's probably his customer's decision, I just don't get it with all the cool stuff out there to choose from. Must be a nostalgia thing.

So what would you put on your old school SBC, CN?? :)

If it was mine I would have gone with some sort of cool EFI system at a minimum, even if it was a SBC. When you put that kind of money into a car, why in the heck would you put two antiquated carbs on top of the engine? If it was supposed to have an "old school" theme, I get it. But the rest of the car doesn't seem to.

I think the premise here was to have a period correct (as much as possible) car that could have been built in the late 50's/early 60's. I think Cody did quite a bit of research before they settled on the color, a rare 1957 Cadillac color. So from that to the minimalistic Austin Healey seats to the door panels, all the VISIBLE components were something that could have been from that era.. This is the third makeover this car has been through with the same owner. Given Cody's influence and skills, the owner decided on more of a traditional hot rod.

Edit..... note the year on the modified PA tag.....

I totally get it, I built my 55 to look like the cars I admired growing up in the 60s. I was too young to buy one then, When I got my first car in the early 70s a 56ht I did not have the money or talent. It was too easy to buy a Camaro and go. What diff. & trans. did they choose

327, 200R4, and a Winters Banjo rear...

Cool love the 327, now to be honest when I was street racing in the 70s, if it was not a 350 I was not interested. However I just spent some coin on resurrecting one for my 56 to replace the 69 model 300hp 350 I built the first time in 76. Nice choice on rear axle too, was hoping it was at least a 55-57 Chev or early Olds, but that's even better. As far as trans goes, I am guilty of late model OD in my 56 a 700 and 55 a Tremec

While I was there, Dave (the owner) got called up to the winners circle, the car received a Pro's Pick award..

Just look at the fit, finish, gaps, panel alignment, etc. Cody Walls really hit a home run with this build.

Had a visitor in the shop yesterday, collaborating with Cody Walls of Traditional Metalcraft (Milton, DE) on adding some louvers to an Austin Healey project he has in his shop. We got the bonnet done yesterday, and I had to modify my radius fixture for the boot as it had too much crown to simply louver while flat. So that is yet to come.

Cody set the hood (bonnet) on the Austin Healey to get a look see on the louvers....

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/y167/rmccartney/IMG_7154.JPG

…..and this past Tuesday he came back to the shop so we could finish up the louvers in the trunk lid (boot). I must say this was the most involved and challenging louver job we have done so far. The trunk lid has a lot of crown, and with a 6” rise in the center, we needed to use the rotation fixture ala Mini Cooper wheel hub. We added to this a hinge mechanism to allow rotation up and down. The limits of the machine's throat height and high crown also meant we'd have to punch half the louvers from back end first, then rotate the lid and tooling and approach the rest from the front end. Now given the extreme flex/twist that the .050 aluminum is prone to, we needed to make sure the cut pattern would be parallel to the last set at the point we rotated from front to back. This required some "gusset" straps clamped in place to limit the twist.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/y167/rmccartney/IMG_7119.JPG

Before this was added, any twist of the panel would change the outer limits of the cut +/- 1/4". Here's the wheel hub arrangement along with the hinges for up and down adjustment. We needed adjustments along 3 different axis to be able keep all the louvers running true and parallel.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/y167/rmccartney/IMG_7125.JPG

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/y167/rmccartney/IMG_7124.JPG

….and we're off....

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/y167/rmccartney/IMG_7126.JPG

At this point we were 4 hours in to measuring, clamping, test run (drag the cutter against the panel to scribe the location), rotate 180 front to back, and test the pattern again, just to get to where we could start cutting. …..and another 4 hours to go before we finished. All told, with the time Vince and I spent Saturday working out clamping methods and other details, the layout was approx 4 times that of what it took to do the actual cutting.
