Tonight in the shop we started the repair work on the front fenders for the 1947 Biederman Truck, seen here for reference:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%203604.jpg

The fenders are made using 16 gauge steel, so this may be a bit challenging when we get to blocking and wheeling patches for the fenders themselves. In the meantime (while still waiting for the new English wheel) let's get started on the inner fenders. The driver's side is the worst, with so much rotted away that we couldn't get accurate dimensions. The passenger side was in much better condition, but just shy of 70 years has taken its toll in adding some wavy distortion. So we'll remake both sides for a better match.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%203644.jpg

In order to get a more crisp bend on the 16 gauge steel, we used a tipping die in the Lennox to thin the metal at the line of the bend.

This detail shot shows how the thinning helps get a tighter bend..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204260.jpg

Next, we needed a profile template for the rear radius, so the kick shrinker is used on a folded 19 gauge strip to add the radius..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204279.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204278.jpg

A flat folded strip works better than an angle as if you shrink too far in this direction.....

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204280.jpg

......you can simply shrink the back half to reverse the effect without the need for changing to the stretching die..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204281.jpg

Now with an accurate pattern, we can use the template on the new inner fender..

With the new clamped to the old, we can see what the years of abuse has done..

Neat old truck, never heard of them had to look it up. Appears they were in business 1920-1955.

Today we got the second inner fender cut out, and took them both over for a test fit on the truck

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204304.jpg

The driver's side has a bolting plate in the middle of the frame for the steering box, so a relief notch was in order...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204306.jpg

....as well as a bit of trimming for some clearance so that the paint won't be chipped off on the first test drive. The fabrication of these parts are done, and we should pick up the new Tommasini Wheeling Machine this coming weekend so we can get started on the fender patches..

John's getting ready for engine start ceremonies, so I guess I need to get off my duff here. To help out in that regard, next we'll fabricate the battery tray which I don't believe came with the truck when John got it. Here's the best we have for a pattern:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204646.jpg

The hold down bracket for the prescribed Group 4 battery was with the truck, so we did some test fitting with the inner fender in place. It is a bit cramped for space, and John expressed concern of the availability of the Group 4 battery. Most local sources only carry the Group 1 in stock, which would also be a better fit.. So out with the old...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204644.jpg

I did miss getting in the flat pictures, but here is the freshly folded and welded hold down bracket for the new battery size.

Need about one more day of curing on the epoxy primer, so today let's work on one of the Biederman fenders.. With Kyle on vacation I was shorthanded in the shop so John (the owner) came by and lent a hand.
First step was to remove the inner fender to see what we had to work with, added some 1/8 holes to use later for clecos in putting things back together..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204723.jpg

The front of the fender bolts to the bumper filler panel, and the rear bolts to the running board. These have a difference in height of 13-3/4, so some blocks were screwed together to hold the fender in correct placement while we worked.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204724.jpg

The inner is getting replaced so the spot welds were ground out for removal.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204727.jpg

Once removed, we found more pitting and damage than we originally thought was there, so now lets make this new as well..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204728.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204730.jpg

New piece is cut out and the Wheeling machine with the go kart slick is used to add the correct radius..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204732.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204734.jpg

Then the flange bend line is marked/thinned using a tipping die in the Lennox like we did for the inner panels we made..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204253.jpg

Then a tipping die and Skateboard wheel in the bead roller is used to make the initial fold on the marked line

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Metalworking/Picture1081.jpg

and finished up with a Step die so we could use it as a backstop

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/1947%20Studebaker%20M5/Picture059.jpg

The Erco 1447 with stretcher dies was used to stretch the flange in between tipping sessions. All done, matches the fender contour, we'll get the other side folded down next time..

With the flanges turned both directions....

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204737.jpg

Looking at the rear of the fender that was adjacent to the cab, we found flat areas that seem to indicate some rubbing was occurring. So while we were fabricating the filler panel, we added about 1/8" to shove the fender outward away from the cab.

Some more work on the Biederman fenders..

A paper pattern was taken from the front of the fender to use as a guide to cut out the new piece from 16 ga cold rolled steel.

Time to break out the TIG welder. The new stumps for the upcoming metalshaping class work well as a welding table. The patch is securely clamped from inside to outside to get an accurate marking for tipping the fold around the wire.

The shop is hosting another Peter Tommasini class this year, one of the items to pass out to the attendees will be some of the rare earth magnets that we use. I just got my delivery in yesterday, these are Cup-26 magnets (http://appliedmagnets.com/cup-magnets-65-lbs-strong-neodymium-1-inch-p-508.html) from Applied Magnets, they have a 65 lb pull. We use them for holding paper patterns to wheel wells during test fit to copper strip for welding backer..

John has been assembling parts of the Biederman truck front end while waiting for the fender completion. He mocked up the hood the other day only to find out it didn't fit the cab as it should.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_1753.jpg

It looks like the cab is wider than the hood, as the radius does not match and it's pushing the hood outward and up....

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_1747.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_1748.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_1755.jpg

To explain, this is a 1947 truck that had extensive rust in the cab. He found a cab on a newer truck, 1951 IIRC, that was made by the same company. It now appears the newer replacement cab is slightly wider than the original, so our intended option is to cut a slice from back to almost the front and add a pie slice to push the radius out and the beltline down where it belongs. Looks like an easier option than remaking the hood. Something else to add to the list. Just to make sure the wider cab doesn't affect fender fitment, we also mocked up the lower hood side and clamped the tapered filler panels and took a comparison measurement from the outside edges, front and back.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_1756.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_1759.jpg

So we have just shy of 3/8 more in the back, or 3/16 pushed outward on each side. I think we can live with that, it likely is well within factory tolerance.. More to come..

Well, I need to make a little progress on a 16 gauge fender, so the highly precise stand for the Laser Level was used. We have about 13-3/4" difference in height from back edge of fender to front edge. So Laser is set at 13-3/4 above the table, with heights verified to all four corners of the table.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_2327.jpg

Prior to trimming the front of the fender we had measured some reference marks to the front edge for locating the new cut line..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Picture%204760.jpg

Adding those lower edge marks back on our fender patch, we adjusted the height of the fender front for the laser to match those marks by sliding our jack stand fixture around inside the fender until we had the correct height. Hey, this is technical stuff!

And traced the laser mark with the sharpie...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_2334.jpg

Initial cut to remove the bulk was done with the Milwaukee shear, the final was done with Midwest Shears. I figured slower = more precise...

The flanges were TIG welded in place, welds dressed, and then worked to remove the remnants of the old filler panel. The old spot welds were removed using a cut off wheel in a die grinder. When the upper panel gets thin, the heat turns it blue. When you see shiny metal again, you have found the second layer, so stop grinding!

This video explains the process a bit better...

Next to clean all the rust that was hiding between the layers. A tight squeeze!

The filler panel we fabricated was positioned, and drilled for some 1/8" cleco's. Then another test fit:

A really big gas one, my other thought was a Hercules or Detroit oil burner. I think these old road tractors are cool.

I saw a wrecker on net had an Hercules HXD gas 6 with 855CI, that's not your typical 6 banger. Mileage was 3 mpg, not as bad as I thought it could be.

Had a fenderless trailer showed up at the shop Wednesday night, needed some welding... Good time as any to try out the new clamps. Two held the fender nice and tight to the frame.

Question I always try to mount trailer fenders at a height I can open the door on a stock ride height Camaro. Usually involves trimming on bottom edges and they end up about 9 inches off trailer deck. These look higher maybe it does not hatter for this trailers use. Yes, even my drag only Camaro with a total mismatch of springs is close to a stock ride height.

We pulled them up where they matched the angle brackets that held the originals. He only uses this for motorcycles.. But yeah, if it were mine it would definitely be set at door clearance height.

Some more progress on the Biederman fenders, here's where we left off last
time...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_3124.jpg

On the passenger fender, we removed the cleco's holding the filler panel and
John (the owner) media blasted the flanges where the panels overlapped..

Cleco holes were enlarged on the filler panel flange to accommodate plug
welds and the two parts welded together...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_3451.jpg

After grinding the welds, John brushed some SPI epoxy in the lapped panels to
seal them up..

edge....

Measures to the bottom of the front edge before it was cut off in three different directions so you can duplicate front edge location after welding on the new piece. The first one used 14, wasn't as much cut off of that one...

tried to make some headway on the Biederman. John is taking it to the truck show in Macungie PA so we're trying to get the fenders complete so he can bolt them on and answer questions all day about their bare finish..

With the lower hood side cleco'ed to the passenger fender using wing nut clecos to pull things up nice and tight, lets get some plug welds done to join all three parts together...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_3501.jpg

Passenger fender lapped seams then had SPI epoxy brushed in from both sides to seal in case he runs into rain. We he returns they'll be ready for media blasting and paint..

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_3525.jpg

Next onto the Driver fender, the remainder of the flange from the old filler panel is removed, a cut off wheel is used for releasing the OEM spot welds..

Next to trim the front of the fender, a laser is set up 13-3/4" above the table holding the fender. This is the differential we measured off the truck from the bumper filler panel down to the running board. all four corners on the table are checked to insure the laser is set correctly. Then the laser line is transposed to the fender and trimmed..

Tonight we got the lower hood side plug welded to the driver's fender, then the lapped seams were brushed with SPI epoxy primer from both sides to seal out the elements. John will be taking this to a couple shows with the fenders in bare metal, so we needed to seal those areas.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_3572.jpg

With the fenders all one piece again, we took them to John's shop for re-assembly. First order of business is to add some welting to the fender area adjacent to the cab's lower cowl area...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_3573.jpg

..then bolted up the fenders and battery tray.. This should give John a head start on the finishing touches tomorrow before loading it up for the Macungie Truck show.

Today we started fabricating the new hood for the Biederman truck. During restoration John had bought a replacement cab with less rust issues that was a couple years newer, and unfortunately slightly wider as well. Since the original hood did not sit down where the bead details aligned, we're going to fabricate a new one that will fit correctly.

As the dominoes continued falling, the hood sides did not fit either. It was our initial plan to cut off the hinge from the top, wire edge from the bottom, and add a new center section, all parts cut to fit properly and welded back together. When we stripped paint off the lower wire edged part, we saw a bit too much pitting, rust, etc. that we opted to change to a full new lower section under the hinge. Nothing to wire edging 16 gauge, right?

Tonight we did the wired edge on the Biederman truck's drivers hood side, so we did a couple videos of the process. We did a practice sample to make sure our adjustment on the folded flange length gave us a good wrap with a slight gap for paint..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b6TiuiUQQQ

This shows the basic process of closing the wrap, wasn't as pretty as it should have been, but hey, this is practice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNc9WJ3SmYA

For the hood side, we used the tipping wheel in the Fasti swaging machine (bead roller) to add the flange. After running through the Lennox for adding the joggle, the panel was scrubbed with a warm dish soap and water mix using scotchbrite, then scuffed with 220 paper, then SPI epoxy added in the channel. After our 3/16 wire was laid in place, any remaining bare spots on the wire were also brushed with epoxy. The entire length was then closed as per the practice sample. We'll let that set a day or so and get the recycled hinge welded to the top.

Thanks for all the kind words fellas, the 16 gauge was definitely a challenge, good to see my portion complete. Laszlo, it does pay better than block sanding paint :D

If anyone local to Lexington KY would like to see it in person, this truck will be at the ATHS 2018 Convention in Lexington Ky, May 31 to June 2nd. I'm told it will be inside the building..

I second that. I don't have a shop and my tools are nowhere as cool as yours but I still manage to pick up things that I can use at home by watching your work.

John sent me a picture today, he picked up the front fenders from his painter and got them installed. He hopes to get the hood parts tomorrow.

Beautiful truck, it is interesting to me how little trucks changed in style for many years after this one.

An update on the Biederman truck, John came across a donor truck with an authentic 1947 Galion dump body, which matches his 47 Biederman perfectly.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Biederman%2000.jpg

It needed some repair work on it but it was a good one to start with. He took it to a local shop and had the tailgate rebuilt, added a cab guard and replaced the floor. It will show a few authentic dents when finished but he says he prefers that to a new edition body on an old truck.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Biederman%2001.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Biederman%2003.jpg

These next pictures really show why we need to add the skirt between the cab and running board.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/Biederman%2006.jpg

The skirt will rest on top of the running board flange, with a rubber edge trim to save some paint rubbing. Here's our sample bend that will rest on top of the flange. (it's shown upside-down...)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/img_3292.jpg

The dump body and other remaining parts will be also be painted blue, he plans to paint this spring.

Been tripping over the 8’ linear slide on the Lennox for the past couple months, time to knock out these Biederman skirts so we can break the linear slide down. This will likely be the last Metalshaping done on this machine before it goes out the door and the replacement comes in.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_4312.jpg

These two bends were done in the magnetic brake, the final fold for the U-shape is done in the Lennox using these dies..

Here's the folding process...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_4321.jpg

Next we took them to a local machine shop, Triton Defense, to hem the U-shape. They used a knife blade in the press brake.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_4324.jpg

The only thing left for these is to fold the top flange for bolting to the underside of the cab, fit, and paint.

John stopped by the shop last night so we could fit up the running board skirts on the Biederman.

I know he will be glad to close off this gaping hole.

https://oi5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_4670.jpg

After taking some measurements we got the top flange folded over using the magnetic brake. The flange will be bolted to the underside of the cab to support the weight as we will leave about a 1/4" or so gap above the running board to allow for frame flex.

https://oi5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_4684.jpg

The rubber edge trim is our attempt to keep the paint from rubbing off, and these are held in place using weatherstrip adhesive.

https://oi5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_4687.jpg

The dump bed had been painted over when John bought it, but closer inspection showed where some additional layers of paint in the hand painted lettering, "Phone 60" had staved off surface rust in it's previous life and was still visible...

To finish off the running board skirts, some epoxy primer was brushed into the hem fold, given a couple days to cure, and then seam sealer added to keep out the moisture..

https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_4834.jpg

https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_4835.jpg

….then another dose of epoxy over the seam sealer, and everything primed.

https://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y167/rmccartney/Johns%20Biederman/IMG_4877.jpg

I didn't get pictures of spraying the blue, so the finals will have to do. John is tying up the loose ends, the running board skirts were installed the other night.....

The dump body has been painted and he should get that installed today or tomorrow.

The Biederman truck we did some rust repairs and metal fabrication on found its way onto the cover of the latest issue of Wheels of Time. It has a feature article on the restoration John did on the truck, as well as a follow up article on the company history. Pretty neat to read, honored to have played a small part in helping preserve an example of this rare truck for future generations.

Congratulatons Robert! You had a hand in that resto, and I'm sure the owner has given you much credit for your part. We are fortunate that you will take the time to document your work and post it for all to see. Thank you. That's some serious old truck porn right there. :p

Robert,
I totally agree with that comment. Really appreciate your skills, innovation, results, and your willingness to share that with us!

You even got me looking at big old trucks, and for a while, I thought this local truck might be a Biederman, but is an International Harvester.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Funny, at one point (think we were working on fenders) I asked John what he was thinking in buying a truck that needed so much rust repair and no parts trucks to be found anywhere. He just shrugged his shoulders and said, here we are. It was a nice challenge to help save this truck that future generations might see this part of the history of Biederman Trucks. I would guess this is going in a truck/transportation museum somewhere before it's all said and done.
