I had an air leak around steering column at the firewall. Fabricated two- piece sheet metal shields to block off flow and used a sealant to secure to firewall. Wondering now if 400degree temp was high enough or not. Would really hate to see it oozing down the firewall once compartment "warmed" up. Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks....

Shouldn't be a problem at all.

Actually, it better not get that hot there.

My logic tells me you should be ok with a 400 degree sealant. Depending on how close the exhaust (header or manifold) is in relation to it....that's your heat source. Just watch it over time...

Actually, it better not get that hot there.

What I meant by that is that if it's hot at all there, you have a huge problem with your feet, and heat in the passenger compartment in general.
