Hi Again Bob & List Members
I was looking at a JC Whitney catalog yesterday and I was wondering if
anyone has had any good or bad experiences with the 55-56-57 Chevy quarters
panels they sell. It sounds to good to be true. They sell a 55-57 quarter
panel for $94.95 each and CCI sells for close to $700.00. What the
difference?
Looking for 55 Nomad Fender and eyebrow chrome. Any one out there with
these items.
Thanks again for the great job.

Has anyone had experience of using walnut shells to remove paint?
BOB

Regarding your question about using walnut shells to remove paint -

Walnut shells can be used alone - but are only about as effective as
plastic- removes paint, but doesn't touch the rust.
Blastec - Kent, WA uses walnut shells mixed with garnet to remove paint
and rust. This seems to work very well.
Blastec stripped my 57 during a frame-off restoration several years ago
and also my current project a 56 PU.

Shops in this area that use plastic 1) charge to remove the paint - if
rust is found 2) they charge again to sandblast and remove the rust or
3) send you to another shop to remove the rust at additional cost.

'morning Bob!

Price wise, from most expensive to least, here's how it goes:
CONVERTIBLE
2 DOOR HARDTOP
NOMAD
4 DOOR HARDTOP
2 DOOR SEDAN
4 DOOR SEDAN
Then of course you have the "rear seat factor", it depends on who's back
there
waiting for you... that really determines the value of a car!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hmmmmm.

Stay Cool.

For sale: Complete 57 Chevy 4 barrel, power pac engine, including correct
breather and carburetor. Block casting 3731548, FC code on pad. Power Pac

Sevierville, TN, home of Dolly Parton and was bought from a lady in
Sevierville. Wagon shows 70,000 miles and is correct. A friend of mine

the antifreeze was still running out of the engine when I got it today, Feb

You asked about removing paint with walnut shells. Works good.

I recently finished restoring a 55 Handyman and had a local shop "bead
blast"
the entire body with walnut shells and plastic media. It works like a huge
car
sized bead blasting cabinet. The blaster gets in a suit kind of like a
deep
sea diver and enters the blast room with the large blasting nozzle and
hose.
It took a a day or so to strip the wagon.

The process is very gentle to the metal unlike sand blasting which can warp
the
metal from the heat. The metal comes out smooth rather than rough. This
blasting will not remove rust.

I was very pleased with the process and plan on sending the Hardtop I'm
restoring to the same place. It cost me $400 to have the wagon stripped
about
3.5 years ago. The only downside to the process is you have to spend some
time
cleaning all the nooks and crannys in the car to get the media out before
you
try to paint it. I used a air hose and a vacuum cleaner at the same time.

You can see my restoration story with pictures of both my 55's at

Bob,
I noted in an append in your most recent listing mailed out that there was
a
comment about a Turboglide not mating up to the block. You commented that
this is because there is a different crankshaft for a Turboglide that has a
deeper recess at the mount.

I've never ever heard of this and wondered where this information comes.
I
had to replace my crank during the engine rebuild and ended up taking it
from another block without any trouble. I guess I could have gotten lucky
but that would be unusual. Up till I read your comment the information
I've
went on is that other than making sure there is no pilot bearing installed
there is only crankshaft for both the 265 and 283 V8s in 1957 and 1958
(obviously 283 V8 only here) for all cars and light duty trucks except high
performance model cars (e.g., 283hp FI and 270hp dual quads). That there
are basically two cast numbers out there that are from this year.

The second part was a special crankshaft for hi-performance models with
counter balancing, and it also had special pistons, cam, etc in the
complete
engine as well. But for standard horse cars and light duty trucks it
really only came down to whether they were manual (3sp or OD) or automatic
(PG or TG) and was a pilot bearing issue only from all the info and
observations I've had. There were too part numbers in service, but the
only
difference was the installation of the pilot bearing or not from everything
I've ever known.

Now if a car had FI and Turboglide then it would be a different crank, the
FI crank with the pilot bearing removed. I've got a service bulletin here
somewhere that talks to this step on servicing same. And I'm not familiar
with the length of this crank, perhaps it was different in length.

I also have a 1958 parts callout for unique items on the Turboglide
equipped
vehicles and it doesn't mention the crankshaft as one either.

So I'm real curious what this is and where the info comes from.

I would have guessed the problem is either that the pilot bearing is still
installed (does happen - especially with shops that don't specialize in
Chevys) or that the Turboglide is not a correct 1957 model as it is very
rare for a 1957 rebuild due to the extreme rarity of parts and the almost
impossibility to rebuild one without getting the cone clutch or cone clutch
springs to act up - which is the design flaw that doomed the unit anyway.
Frequently folks who want to have a TG have to put a later model one
together and adapt it to fit the 1957 car and if you don't do it right it
won't fit (58-61 models are too short).

Thanx,

Edward D. Shockley (remove the "nospam" to reply)
Homepage: http://drshock.home.att.net

Editor's note. This problem with the crankshaft was brought to my
attention about a year ago
by my good friend Jo Page. She had a rebuilt 283 put in her 57 and when
they tried to hook up the
Turboglide, they called her and said it would not fit. She called me and
asked for my help. She thought
the shop was trying to rip her off. So did I. I had never heard of a
Turboglide crankshaft. I went down to the shop and had a look at the
problem. Sure enough they could not bolt the Turboglide back to the
crankshaft. The hole in the crankshaft where the Turboglide slides in was
about 1 inch to shallow. I thought they had put the wrong crankshaft on
the 283, so I went to a very old engine rebuilder I knew and trusted and
asked him to show me a crankshaft for a 283. His first words were what year
283. When I told him 57, he asked which crankshaft I wanted. I told him
I thought there was only one for a 57 283 with automatic transmission.
He told me that was true except for years 57 through 61 when there were 2
for cars with automatic. He didn't know why these years were different.
Since Turboglides were only made in 57 through 61, I thought he had given
me the answer. Since Jo had not returned her old 283 core, I compared the
crankshaft in her old motor with the one in here new motor. Sure enough the
hole in the rear of the crankshaft in her old motor was about 1 inch deeper
than the one in her new motor. If someone could provide some information
on this, I would be grateful as I have not seen this documented anywhere.

Has anyone had experience of using walnut shells to remove paint? >>

My brother is co-owner of a restoration shop in San Luis Obisbo that
specializes in street rods and custom paint. They used to use walnut shells

but the problem was all the pieces trapped in every nook & cranny. Even
after
carefully blowing out the body w/ compressed air, a small piece would show
itself during painting. They now strip everything w/ aircraft stripper to
metal and then hose off the residue.

Bob,
I believe that your request to place asking price for items and to identify

at least state location is not only good, but should be required. I
eliminated the need for city, because many of us live in small towns - some

not even on large maps.

Your efforts are really appreciated by most of the readers; it is good
enough that I would be willing to pay for a "subscription".

The difference between an original powerglide and 3spd crank is the
hole
for the pilot bushing. The pilot bushing hole is about .033" smaller on a
powerglide crank. You can buy the smaller size pilot bushing if you are
using an orig powerglide crank with a standard transmission, but don't
believe that the roller pilot bearing is available with the smaller
diameter. Thanks Dan

Hello! Just our comment concerning the CCI registration for local
chapters. This is not something new - every year for the umpteen years
we've been involved with local chapters, CCI sends out their registration
forms in the fall. Bow Tie Chevys does the same thing. Every year the
local chapters must mail their club info back into CCI, in September or
October. They don't try to make it difficult for local chapters, but
knowing how long it takes to get info together and collated from all the
local chapters for publication in the magazine, they have to get the info
back in a timely manner. Since they do send out a lot of info at once to
local chapters, it may appear to be hidden in with other stuff, but that's
just because they send so much stuff at once.

sure sounds 'fishy' to me. If you are selling a classic,
why wouldn't you tell us if its - two door, four door,
convertible or coupe; 6 cyl or 8; Bel Air or 150. If its
a convertible it might be worth the $29,000; if its a
150, 4 door, he's dreaming. Hey Mike, why don't you
give us the facts. >>

sale needs to give a good description of it! At least the following: Body

make & model (2 dr, 4dr. or ???), Engine size, Trans., color, & state if
Orig., restored, modified or ??? Just a brief description of major
modifications should be sufficient! Plus any major accessories, ie. P.S,
