In re to my original post about the garnish moulding I have gotten one
response that said yes and one that said no - plus the original source that
said yes - anyone else want to add to this? I didn't think this would be a
difficult question to answer. I used a magnet on my moulding and it is
strongly attracted suggesting they are mild steel - however, I know some
grades of stainless steel has iron in it. -Bob

Hi Bob & List members,

There has been a lot of discussion on this list, and in the news
about the above subject.
I saw something recently, that I had been thinking about, in regard to
the reasons for the large increases in gas prices.
The other day, the Baltimore Sun Papers had two headline stories on
the same page. The stories where informative in themselves, but the bigger
untold story
was the conflict of interests of our nation when comparing the content of
the two
articles. One article was concerning the cost of gas. The other had to do
with a large order
for jet fighters for export to the far east.
The untold story is that we are experiencing "fuel oil blackmail" by
the very same countries that buy our weapons, jets, repair parts and
technology. I
wonder how long these high prices would continue if we where to cut off the
supply of
repair parts etc.?
Another point.....I have heard no mention of alternative fuel
development to prevent this "fuel blackmail". When I lived in the
Mid-West, gasohol was very
popular. It was not subject to large price increases. My car ran very
well on it.
Spark plugs lasted longer The fuel burned cleaner. Fuel injectors stayed
clean and the internal
combustion engine liked it.
The Government has mandated the auto industry design and produce
more fuel efficient cars with less pollution emissions. But has done
nothing to
get the oil companies to develop and alternative fuel such as gasohol. We
finally have a
commercially available synthetic oil. Something that was used by Germany
during world war II.
Electric cars are not the answer either. They will ultimately
create another pollution problem from the materials used in batteries.
Another disposal problem
like that of nuclear waste!
Another benefit of an alternative fuel, would be the lack of
necessity for this nation to jump in and fight another county's battles to
protect our interests
in their oil fields. Did Exxon, ARCO, Chevron etc. contribute anything to
the Gulf War? Aside
from other possible alternative fuels, this country produces enough grain,
coupled
with our own natural resources, to produce all the fuel we could ever need.
(Stop
exporting our Alaskan oil to Japan to help offset our dollars for import of
their
goods.)
Like the old saying goes "Charity begins at Home"!
Bob, I hope you don't consider this "Soap Box Editorial" something
controversial. If you do decide not to publish it on the list, I'll
understand. I would
appreciate your private message indicating your thoughts on the subject.
It does have an effect
on our hobby and if you think about it, the history of our cars is tied
to the
history of our country. Somehow, we need to remind our legislators that
they work for us. Not
the other way around.

Rich, Baltimore, MD

Editor's note. I am happy to publish your point of view. I think it is
shared by a lot of people.

Every once in a while on this list, I sneak in a money savings tip. Here
is one. I think it is a
universal practice for phone companies to charge you extra each month to
have an unlisted number.
However, you can have your number listed in the phone book any way you
like. So instead of having an unlisted number you have a listed number and
the name with the phone number is John Smith.
You have accomplished the same goal and you don't pay extra each month.

Bob,

I installed power disc brakes on my Nomad. No problem using the 14"
wheels as long as the conversion is correct. I bought my kit from East
Coast Chevy.
Everything went on without a problem, and works very well. Best part is
that the calipers
are located to the rear of the rotors where they belong. Beware of any
kits that mount the
calipers to the front.

FOR SALE: 1957 283 powerpac engine (FC code) and original powerglide
transmission, complete including correct original breather, 4 barrel
carburetor, and exhaust manifolds. Engine and transmission only have
70,000 miles on them. The Nomad that these parts were removed from is in
Sevierville, TN, 'DOLLY'S' home town, and was just purchased for the
original owner last year. A friend of mine drove this Nomad and tried to
buy it last year at a Tri-5 show in Pigeon Forge, TN, but the man would not
sell it, said he was going to make a street rod out of it. (I could almost
have cried) When he removed the drive train on February 20, 2000, I bought
the engine and transmission. He kept the brackets, etc, but I have most
everything else. The engine and transmission are exceptionally clean with
factory original paint except for the exhaust manifolds and valve covers
which were removed to replace leaking gaskets. I have digital pictures
available for 'interested' parties. These parts are perfect for that
professional restoration and are the best original engine and transmission
that I have ever seen. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!! I'm looking for
around $2500 for everything and I live in Cleveland, TN, near Chattanooga.
My phone number is 423-479-6317 should anyone want to call me.
Thanks again and as always remember GOD is Love, Ken

Bob,
Can anyone tell me what color the wheel rims were painted on a '57 Chevy
two tone when hub caps (not wheel covers) were ordered? Were they painted
the
same as the top of the car, or the bottom of the vehicle, or did the buyer
make the choice?
Thanks in advance for the feedback.
Warren

WARREN,

You'll probably get a similar answer on an upcoming list, but it really
depends on the model of the car and on when it was made. For instance, I
have a Bel-Air. It's a two-tone and is a very early '57. The wheels are
the same as the body color. An identical 210 would have the wheels painted
the color of the top. Later in 1957 the factory decided to paint all the
wheels silver (probably to save money). I think that happened in April,
but
I'm not certain. Someone on Bob's list will know. I guarantee it!

They did a lot of goofy things back then. Just keep asking and you'll
learn
how they did it, but you'll never be able to guess why!

Good luck with your car.

Don Kent
Northridge, CA

Editor's note. I want to second what Don said about the way cars were built
in 57. Sometimes when the factory ran out of something they used something
completely "non standard" on a car. That is why judging is a very
difficult job. I have seen things on cars from the factory that are hard
to believe unless you saw the car as it came off the truck that brought the
car to the dealer.

I note that several other list recipients have already inputted opposing
views
on the subject of "fuel prices", but I'd like to contribute mine
nevertheless.
Please allow me to add that I'm a mechanical engineer working in the
automobile,
not petroleum, industry.

No one likes to pay more for any commodity than they have been accustomed
to
paying in the immediate past. And, memories of the more distant past tend
to be
faded a bit and somewhat selective! With this in mind, I'd note that when I
first started to pay attention to such things in the early 1950's (I'm 55
now),
regular leaded gas sold for 27.9 cents a gallon in the area of New York
City
where my folks and I then lived. I can also well recall paying $1.61 a
gallon in
Metamora, Michigan in 1974. These prices include all taxes levied at the
time,
by the way.

One must keep in mind that my dad (and most working people) considered
themselves fortunate to be earning $100.00 a week in the early '50's,
though.
His was the sole family income, also typical of that time. Fuel prices in
Michigan are now, in the year 2000, roughly six times their early - '50's
level
(including the higher US Federal and State taxes now levied). My earnings
(to
say nothing about those of my wife, who is also employed outside our home)
are
far greater than six times the early '50's level of my father. A similar
analogy
can also be made if one compares 1974 vs. 2000 (at least in my case).

Would I rather see unleaded gasoline selling at less than $1/Gallon today?
Heck,
yes! But, the laws of supply and demand dictate otherwise. Before one
complains
too long and loud about fuel prices in the US, did you ever think about
what
many willingly pay per Gallon for bottled water? And don't even begin to
think
that holding off purchase - of any relatively non-perishable commodity -
for a
couple days is going to affect the price. As a matter of fact, any retailer
would be tickled to sell the same volume of fuel in 2/3 the time - since
he/she
could simply close up shop for part of the time and significantly reduce
labor
costs! No, if one wants to cause a reduction in the price of fuel, a
reduction
in consumption is the only way to achieve it. Americans have, and continue,
to
demonstrate that we are not yet willing to do this.

I have traveled in Europe several times, and seen the equivalent of
$6.00/Gallon
prices there. One commenter has already pointed out - correctly - that
typical
commuting and overall travel distances are shorter there. Has he/she ever
thought about Australia, or other less-developed areas of the world though?
In
summary, I'm much happier to live in a Country where I can purchase all the
fuel
I want for less than $2.00 a Gallon - rather than not be able to get any
rega
rdless of price!
