Hi Bob,
Here a message from Holland, Europe about the gas prices.... What are you
Americans complaining about?????? A litre gas regular unleaded costs here
about $1 and 10 cents!!! That makes about $5 dollar a Gallon... Don't come

here to get cheap gas. We do have an alternative... LPG (liquid Petrol gas)

which is a by product of the gas refining process. But I do have to harden
my valves and some other parts... So be glad....

Thanx for your list,

Hans

Thanks for the opportunity to find out so much info ,Bob

I have a question about a

padded dash for a 56. I have owned three 56's with one. This seems a little

strange because I have only seen a few others with one. Does anyone out
there know how popular of an option they were in 56?

So you think that gasoline is expensive?

Diet Snapple 16oz for $1.29 = $10.32 per gallon
Ice Tea 16oz for $1.19 = $9.52 per gallon
Gatorade 20oz for $1.59 = $10.17 per gallon
Ocean Spray 16oz for $1.25 = $10.00 per gallon
STP Brake Fluid 12oz for $3.15 = $33.60 per gallon
Vick's Nyquil 6oz for $8.35 = $178.13 per gallon
Pepto Bismol 4oz for $3.85 = $123.20 per gallon
Whiteout 7oz for $1.39 = $25.42 per gallon
Scope 1.5oz for $0.99 = $84.48 per gallon

And this is the REAL KICKER ...

Evian water 9oz for $1.49 = $21.19 per gallon
... $21.19 FOR WATER!!!

So next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on Nyquil,
or Scope, or Whiteout.

Can some one explain the painting process where the car change colors as
you view it from different angles.

Is is a costly process?

BOB
---------- >>
Bob,, this is a metallic paint with PEARL added to the color. There are 2
ways of doing pearl that I know of. (possibly more-I don't know much about
CUSTOM painting). You can just add the pearl powder to your paint. It's
not
too expensive, OR you can do it the EXPENSIVE WAY, which of course is a
much
nicer & you get a really true Pearl effect!!!!! this way involves many
different processes of which I am not familiar. There should be a much more

knowledgeable painter on your list that can probably give you more info on
it
than I can> But I DO know it IS EXPENSIVE!!!!! Richard

Rich in Baltimore, all heads could be had with both types of valves, you
cannot go by the casting numbers, it is easy to tell the difference. Use a
tape measure and determine across the intake valve ( the bigger one)
whether
it is right at 2 inches or shy of 2 inches. also 2.02s are real close
together (Intake and exhaust) WHERE 1.94S have about an 1/8 inch between
them

Rich, you are correct about the engine. It is a big Chevy 327 with PG and
the 'R' on the 'HC' code means it had a Rochester carb. The heads are easy
to tell if the valves are 2.02 or 1.94. If the heads have 2.02 valves, a
dime will 'not' go between the intake and exhaust valves. Most 461's (300
hp, gross) had 1.94 valves and the combustion chambers are 57.5 cc. Only
the high horse (350 hp, gross) had the 2.02's and they were 58.6 cc.

Bob,

The effect you are talking about I believe is what is known as
Chromeillusion
paint from DuPont , and other names from BASF, PPG, and House of Kolor.
These
paints use the same aluminum particles that are used in the ink on the new
twenty dollar bills and as Ford used on some late model Mustangs where the
paint was called Mystic paint. When we asked DuPont the price it was $250 a

pint two years ago at Back to the Fifties in St. Paul. They had a late
model
Mustang with their Chromeillusion paint on it on display and it was very
impressive as far as color changes go. The effect is the same as looking
thru
a prism which breaks light up into its primary colors.

This paint is really impressive when used for the flames on a car. They
appear to be moving due to the color changes.

Hope this answers your question.

Hi Bob,

In response to your question about the new paint systems that change color
as the angle of view changes. . .

The painting process is the same as any Base coat/Clear coat system.

The difference is in the actual raw materials used to make the paint color.
In the metallic colors they use aluminum or plastic silver flakes.
In the "changing color" paint - Mica is used instead of aluminum flake - it
allows the light to pass through the flaske and reflect throughout the
paint. It also uses flake that is "precolored" - this is how they can get
the base color to be blue or green or red. A few of these paints are
painted over a base coat of a normal color to establish the base line color
also - the Mustang Cobra used a green base as an example.

Hope that helps with the question - the paint is also more expensive - due
to the increase in materials cost to mfg. it

Best regards,
Oliver

For a new car owner/seeker I recommend two books:
Hemings offers a book for free (even though it says $3 on the face)
called:
How to Get Started in the Old Car Hobby. This 32 page B/W pamphlet gives
you the beginning of what we are about. Just call or write Hemmings for
it at
http://www.hmn.com or 800-227-4373

Also try a book from Jim Richardson (the tech on the My Classic Car TV
show) called:
Tri-five Chevy Handbook, from HPBooks-1285 for $17.95. It is not too
detailed but will give you a better concept. He also wrote another book,
Classic Car Restorer's Handbook that is more brand generic. My wife
found it at Amazon.com

If you have access to Speedvision on cable TV check out Dream Car usually
on Saturdays. Each year they do a built up of car and gives you a feel
for what is involved.

Hi Bob,

I answered Bob McNulty's question directly to him and then I read the
4-5 responses in the "list" I received today. In those responses,
everyone used the term "sedan" for a 2 or 4 door post. While my
dictionary agrees that a sedan is a 2 or 4 door car, it also defines a
coupe as a 2-door. In auto manufacturer's termanology, a coupe is a
2-door car and a sedan is a 4-door car. Proof of this use of coupe and
sedan is to you look at the model line-up for the '55-'56-'57
Chevrolet's, you'll see that the 2-doors are all called coupes and the
4-doors are all called sedans. A "2-door post" is a coupe and the
"postless hardtop" was called a Sport Coupe because it had 2-doors,
therefore a coupe, but a "sportier" version without a post. The Sport
Sedan is a postless 4-door and because it has 4-doors is a sedan. You
may have also seen the term "convertible coupe". While all Chevrolet
convertibles were 2-door, many manufacturers did have 4-door
convertibles which were called "convertible sedans". Again, because
auto makers do distinguish between 2 and 4 door cars by calling them
coupe and sedan, respectfully.

Hi Bob,

The guy who painted my '55 is painting a truck for the show circuit.
They are using a paint that changes color (about 6-7 colors) according
to the angle you look at it. I can get the name of the paint but it was
$500.00 per pint. About $5000.00 just for materials to paint the
truck. He took the lid of the paint and as you looked at the paint on
the lid, it was similar to seeing oil on water in the sun. Literally, a
rainbow of colors in one can. I think it's a PPG paint.

Phillip

Editor's note. At $500 a pint, you could have a car where the paint job is
worth more that the whole
rest of the car.

Hi Bob

If you are referring to the paint that is 'green ' at one angle and 'blue'
from another its called KOSMIC KOLOR from House of Kolor-it is REALLY
costly
(I was quoted almost $200 for a quart) and hard to paint-but it looks

CAN THIS MARRIAGE BE SAVED?
HER STORY: Lord knows, I've been patient. For over a year now this '56
V8 power pack engine with Powerglide transmission has been sitting in
our nice residential driveway wrapped up in black plastic. I'm sorry but
I really don't think it enhances our landscaping theme at all. No one
else in the garden club has anything like it. Everyone knows that I have
put up with numerous auto restoration projects in our garage and even
paint jobs in our driveway for 30+ years of marital bliss. My house has
smelled of paint thinner for months at a time. Our garage roof sags
from too many engines lifted from the rafters. I have helped bleed more
brakes than most women have ever seen. But enough is enough. THAT
ENGINE'S GOTTA GO!

HIS STORY: It's not like I haven't tried to sell the #$%&* thing. I've
advertised it in magazines, the internet and here on this site several
times. I've had many nibbles but no takers. All I'm asking is a lousy
$100 bucks for a running complete '56 genuine 265 power pack engine
(reputedly bored to 283 or more) and Powerglide transmission. (Come on,
guys, a couple of the parts alone are worth more than I'm asking for
everything.) I would truck it off to the salvage yard tomorrow except I
know that somewhere out there is a guy who is restoring a '56 and could
really use and appreciate this package. This engine/trans served me
faithfully for about 18+ years and let's just say I have an emotional
need to see that it goes to a good home. All I ask is that you come and
get it (Carmel, CA) or pay me a coupla hundred bucks extra (plus
shipping) for the aggravation of crating it and getting it to the
trucking company. Please save a marriage. E-mail me at

To all the list member that consider themselves new to working on these old
cars, I say don't be afraid to tear into them. They are really simple to
work on.
I am 29 years old and am not a mechanic. My first car was a '55 sedan,
when it
broke down I had to fix it. My motto is: "I'd rather do it wrong three
times
than pay someone to do it right the first time." I get a lot of
satisfaction figuring
out how these old cars work. After 13 years of working on these cars there
are only two
things that I have yet to do: rebuild an automatic transmission and set up
the gears in a
rear end. One other thing that I hope to try is converting an old
mechanical fuel
injection unit such as Hilborn to electronic fuel injection and installing
in my
'56 210 sedan. Also, ask all the questions you can. You can learn much
more from
people with real life experience than you can from a Chiltons manual
(however
the manual is important.) Here's a question I was recently asked and have
no idea
to the answer. "What were the narrowest 15" steel rims that Chevrolet
produced with
the 5 on 4-3/4" bolt pattern and what where they installed on?" I believe
the
widest steel rims are the 15 x 8 ralley rims installed on corvettes, is
this correct?

One of the list members wrote in about radiator leaks. Most obvious source
could be a loose hose, but with a new radiator I hear leaks are to be
expected.

When we got our '56 going 2 years ago we had leaks from the new radiator.
I asked around and then bought a product named, Aluma-seal. I believe a
paid something like $1.59, for it. I may be the last one to have heard of
the thing.

Aluma-seal comes in a plastic tube, about an inch around and 3 inches long.
The product looks like powdered aluminum, or some such. You pour it
directly into the radiator and follow the rest of the instructions. I
haven't had a leak since I used it.

There may be other things to say about the subject, like side effects,
better products, etc. Let's hear from others if there are.

Good luck.
