Editor's note. Richard, the cost of hardened valve seats is small
compared
to the cost of an overhaul. I would have them put in. On my 283
overhaul, the cost of
hardened valve seats was less than $100. Who knows what gas will be like

Bob, about a gallon of paint would do, as after you add reducer & catalyst,

you end up with about 1 1/2-1 3/4 gal. of sprayable material. All you need

for the base is 2 coats. Then you just add 3 coats of clear! Richard

Dear Bob

Can anyone on the list help me? I know that the subject of trailering
companies has been discussed before but I am hoping that someone can
refresh my memory.

I may need to have a car shipped from Boston to New Jersey. Can anyone
recommend a good company (and, importantly, can anyone tell me the names to
avoid).

Thanks for your help people - and, as always, thanks to Bob.

Hey guys,
I've got some odds and ends parts here that I would like to get rid of.

I'm selling everything here as one lot. All of them have defects or need
restoration. Included is: 1 '55-'56 chevy horn (doesn't work), '57
original
engine fan, '55 day/night mirror (glass needs resilvering and chrome bezel
needs replating), 2 6cyl fuel pumps for rebuilding (one has a glass filter
bowl on it!), 1 6cyl water pump (leaks past the bearing), 1 original '56
T-3
headlight (low beam doesn't work), 1 original master cylinder, 1 '55 solid
mount generator, 1 pair of original '55 wiper arms/blades, 1 pair of
aftermarket wiper arms/blades, a 55/56 dash clock (doesn't work), and a 3
speed floor shifter with linkage and levers. I would like to get $40 for
everything here. Shipping would be extra.

What is the most cost efficient way to convert my 55 chevy to front disc
brakes. I have seen several kits, but have read about people using
salvage chevy parts.

Thanks

Editor's note. I would not recommend trying to do a disk brake conversion
from salvage parts. Brakes are one of the most important safety parts on a
car. If you do not get the proper proportioning valve you will be in big
trouble when you try to stop. Consult a mechanic you trust to do the
conversion.

In regards to hardened valve seats. I been told that old casting have a
higher content of steel than new castings which makes them hard enough to
run
unleaded fuel with out replacing the seats. I have also been told that
millions of combustion cycles on a valve seat can actually act to harden it
with
time. Any comments?

I have talked to many different people about installing hardened valve
seats.
Some people say its absolutely necessary other do not. I recently built a
big
block with enough compression that I have to run additive with pump gas.
As
long as I have to add octane, I might as well add lead, therefore I did
not opt
for hardened seats. If I were going to build an engine for every day
driving I
would install hardened seats. For a classic not driven very often, I
would not
install the hardened seats unless the seats in the heads were messed up and
needed replacing. Look at how many pre 1974 Chevys that are still running
around with stock engines without hardened seats. I figure hardened seats
may
extend the life expectancy of an engine, but who's planning on putting
150,000
miles on their classic? I had an old Chevy Surburban with a rebuild small
block
400 non-hardened seats. The motor had 225,000 on it when I sold it. The
valve
guides were shot, but the seats were fine! At 8 mpg I burned the
cheapest gas
I could find.

Bob, in 1962 I bought a '57 Chevy 2-door Hardtop with a tired 283 ( after
only 5 years) and after a few months my friends and I took the engine out &

put in a hi-performance 327 short block. I had the 283 heads reworked but
to
clean them up required surfacing about 40 thousands off the heads. Bolting
them onto the 327 I estimate produced about 12-1 compression & I had a lot
of
head gasket problems & had to run hi octane gas which is not realistic in
this day & age. Better to go with the new heads. Also, a friend who was an
Professor at Stanford U. & I talked & unless an engine is subjected to
heavy
duty usage it is not necessary to convert to hardened seats until the
engine
needs a rebuild . Keeping the oil changed on a regular basis , even with
low
use cars is an essential part of good maintenance. Don

Bob,

I just wanted to thank all the folks who helped me with my "restore or
Hotrod" dilemma for my 56 Chevy Suburban. The overwhelming opinion is to
restore it to the days when it was General Douglas MacArthurs staff car.
Everyone also said that it was a personal decision... and I can respect
that. I think I'll do the restoration (only thing missing is the original
seats....) and show it for a while. When I get the hotrod bug again... I'll
either sell it to a military collector or museum or re-visit whether I
should use it. There are not many of these left so either way... it will be
used and not end up at the crusher. Thanks again to everyone who
answered....

The difference between a Beauville wagon and a Townsman wagon is that the
Beauville is a 9 passenger and a Townsman is a 6 passenger. Both of these
models were available in BelAirs and 210s in both 56 and 57 Chevys. The
Townsman was the more common model, making the Beauville 9 passenger a
little
on the rare side.

Bob, one gallon of color paint will do the base on most cars. The amount
of paint here is not important as long as the color is there. The clear is
the important part. You must spray enough coats to prevent a burn through
from wet sanding, buffing, etc. Usually 3 to 5 coats but some people go
wild with 10 coats. More is not necessarily better. Paint and metal do
not contract and expand at the same rate and the thicker the paint, the
more chance of cracking as the paint ages. One to two gallon of clear will
do most cars.

Still have the doggone 57 engine and transmission for sale (423-479-6317).
Thanks and always remember 'GOD is Love', Ken

This is for Steve Kimball. In the '55 model year, the Townsman was a
210 4 door wagon. The Beauville was the name of the Bel Air 4 door
wagon. In 1956 the Townsman was the 210 4 door 6 passenger wagon. The
Beauville was the 4 door 9 passenger wagon, available in both 210 trim
and Bel Air trim. The Bel Air trim cost $134 more, (base price). In 1957
the Townsman was available in both the 210 and Bel Air while the
Beauville was a 210 option only. Both were 6 passenger models, the 9
passenger having been dropped after the '56 model. Hope this helps! Wild

In 1956 Beauville was a Bel Air and 210 series 9 passenger wagon. 9
passenger wagons were not available in 1955. In 1957, the 9 passenger
was dropped from the Bel Air series so the Beauville was a 210 only.
The Townsman was a 210 6 passenger wagon in 1956 and in 1957 it was a
Bel Air model as well as a 210. Also in all 3 years, the 210 series
featured a 2 door sedan and a Del Ray Club Coupe. Both were 6 passenger
vehicles, shipping weight on both was 3115#, the cars were identical
except for interior trim level. -Del Ray was 2 color vinyl with carpet,
sedan was cloth & rubber mat.
Note 1 is sedan, 1 is coupe. The terms were used interchangeably during
those years. The two door hardtop was known as the hardtop coupe or
sport coupe. The '56 and '57 4 door hardtops were Sport Sedans..
As to Suburbans, the U S Air Force had several at Davis-Monthan AFB in
Tucson, AZ. We used one there in 1956 on the survey crew, and I know
they were used on the flight line to haul personnel and equipment to the
aircraft.
