Bob, the harden valve seats is more myth than fact. I will turn the double
nickel in June and have been using the Amoco super premium 'unleaded' fuel
since I was a teenager. I used this fuel in all my cars which included a
55, 56, and 57 Chevys and might I note 'none' had harden seats. I went to
the local drag strip often and won trophies with all my cars, especially
the 57. I turned the quarter in 15.32 secs in a stock and I mean stock
283. No one believed it and I was protested by everyone in my class and
had to tear down my engine to keep the trophy. Do you think I torn the
engine down for the $30 protest fee? Your doggone tootin I did. When I
got the head off the track official saw the ring groove in the cylinder
walls and said "it's not bored out it's worn out". I had a good laugh, got
my $30 and prize trophy, and towed my 57 home. That trophy cost me several
hundred dollars to rebuild my engine, but so what, I was just a crazy
teenager sending all those hot new Mustang owners home with their tails
tucked between their legs. I also bought a new 1972 LT-1 Corvette
convertible and continued to use this unleaded fuel in this car; in fact,
that is all that will run in the LT-1. By the way, I still own the LT-1
and it is stored in my basement with 31,000 originally owner miles. I've
said all this to again say don't believe everything you hear about unleaded
fuel and harden valve seats. This Amoco super premium is the best gas on
the market and if you don't believe me try burning other unleaded fuels in
a coleman lantern. It is the only pump gas that will burn in these
lantern. Thanks again Bob for this excellent site, keep up the good work,
and always remember 'GOD is Love', Ken

Editor's note. Ken makes a good point. All unleaded gas is not the same.

Bob, there was a discussion recently about two different crankshafts and
torque converter combinations for early SBCs. Is there an archive location
where I can search for these messages? Thanks. -Bob W.

Editor's note. That came from my Turboglide experience. The 1957
crankshaft of a Turboglide transmission is not the same as any other
crankshaft in 1957. If you have Turboglide you must have
the Turboglide crankshaft. However the Tuboglide crankshaft will work with
Powerglide, 350, 400, 700R4.

Hi Bob and all list members!
I have a question concerning a bigblock engine: After a complete
restoration I now have a bigblock in my 55 BelAir. As a wanted to screw
the relocated oil filter kit to the block, I stated that there is a
different oil filter base. It has a center bore with a thread of 1/2
inch so you cannot use the normal oil filters. Therefore the relocating
parts doesn't fit, too. I think it is for using a metal housing and a
filter element inside (which didn't come with the engine)

1. Can anyone of you identify this engine?
2. Which cars had that engine?
3. Do you know this oil filter system?
4. What can I do to modify the relocating flange that it will fix?

I got the engine years ago complete rebuilt from the USA and was told
that it is a 402cui, which in the 60s was sold under the 396cui label. I
know it came from a GM 4-wheel car and during the restoration I saw two
casting marks reading "TRUCK" and "H.P." on the backside of the block.
Unfortunatelly I have no engine code on it.
If I could not use my oil filter relocating/cooling kit I would need a
part-# or so for the missing "cap", screw and filter element.
Although my problem doesn't really belong to the tri-five family I
would be happy, if someone could bring me a little further.

Thanks again Bob for the continual work for our pleasure!

Greetings from Munich/Germany
Dieter

Bob,
I want to thank you for posting this and also to
the person
who sent me the email on pulling the tumblers out of my ignition switch on
my 55 Chevy. It worked exactly like he said. It had been a long time since
I tried to do this and forgot about putting it in the lock postion.

Thank You Very Much

Stan

PS I got it all hooked back up and everything seems to work fine
but, I noticed my gas gauge needle is way down past empty, do I have one of
my
plugs on the back of my ignition switch wrong? And also it did work before
and there is one prong on the switch that does not have a wire for it.

Hi Bob,

I have a pair of double-hump heads that I'm working on for an engine I'm
building. I was planning to put in the hardened seats, but I was told that
only the exhaust seats need the hardened inserts. Is that right, or do the
intake seats need the inserts, too?

Thanks again for all of the good advice.

Editor's note. That is correct. You only put hardened seats in the
exhaust.

I am installing a 400 cu in small block in a '56 Delray and want to retain
my 4 speed transmission. I know that the 400 is externally balanced as is
the
454. I also know that the 454 flywheel has a different part number than the

400 flywheel. I have located an externally balanced flywheel with the part
(casting?)number of 3976457 and can't identify if. Any help? I don't wish
to pay my Chevy dealer $162.00 for a new flywheel. Has anyone used a 454
flywheel on a 400?

I have tons of parts and about a dozen 55 thru 57 Chevy builders for sale.
Located in Delaware, thanx, Jay 302-322-1833

< Jay they sell a plate that bolts on to any standard internally balanced
flywheel for chevys that will balance out your 400 just check your parts
store and ask them about them. You can find an internally balanced flywheel
cheap and just buy that plate for around $ 10 then your ready to go. I
personally would'nt use the 454 one as i am sure they are balanced
different. I use one of those plates on a 454 that i have and i have never
had a problem with it. It bolts through the bolt holes that bolt the
flywheel to the crank.
Hope that helped

Dear Bob
Enjoy your column very much.
I have a 55 Chevy that I ned a little advice on.Iam putting a rear
windshield in and having problems getting the rubber sear to seat on the
lip of the lip of the car. Also I need a paint code on the original paint
code of India Ivory.I bought a nrew grill off of Danchuck and had a very
hard time lining up the grill to make it fit.It took me 3 hours to
finally get it to fit properly.Te grill was made in the USA but it just
didn't want to fit properly had to loosen the whole front end to get it
to fit properly.Should I have had to do all this extra work.I would
appreciate any info from other members on my 3 pet peeves I have got
from Danchuck that i have had problems.Keep up the good work on your
preserving the TriFive Connection because I thank with all the
consolidations of other car buffs the TriFives are a dying breed.I have
been looking in a lot a magazines and there are not of TriFives shows
left in the country.I know were going to Baltimore in June for the Bow
Tie,Late Great and YesterYears Convention and 2 Weeks later CCi is
having a convention in Cleveland Oho.
I wish the organizations would get together and schedule there
convention so most people could attend both and me MYself and other
members feel this is to close to each other conventions. But I guess the
name is Money,Who can make the most and who can get the most people to
come to there shows. But I think if this continues more and more people
are going to shun these conventions and go to local cruise ins and save
a lot of money.

Have a good day.
