Need Info;

I have purchased a new stereo for my 55. Removing the half of the old radio

with the push buttons was easy. Removing the half with the tubes seems
almost
impossible.
There just doesn't seem to be enough room to get it out from behind the
dash.
If anyone has done this successfully please clue me in on the right
procedure
to do it.

Dear Bob

WANTED - 55 NOMAD

As the warmer months come closer some list members may be thinking about
selling their cars.

My search for a 55 Nomad goes on and, who knows, perhaps this time I'll be
lucky.

I'm looking for a modified car - possibly with a 350/350, pab/pas set-up.
The mechanical details are not critical - but I am looking for a clean,
straight, rust-free car. The car is going to live in England - not a
country reknowned for it's dry climate. Rust + London = early death! I
have cash waiting ($25k) for the right car. I will not waste your time. I
have been looking for two years and, if the car meets the brief, I will buy
it.

Here's hoping.........

1955 Chevrolet Nomad I have owned this car for
24 years. This is a very straight, rust free,
never been wrecked, beautiful in appearance,

the appearance of this vehicle has been a color
change. It was originally white and brown inside
and out. Exterior brown was changed to black and
the brown upholstery inserts were replaced with
the same stock insert in tomato to compliment
the black exterior. It was driven a few weekends
a year to car club events with the family, and

A quick note to add to the hardtop/post issue. At least for the 57 year
the rear view interior mirror is different too! The hardtop as
previously mentioned has a different rear window shape and hence the rear
view mirror needs to be on a lower support to "clear" the window rim and
see out without scrunching your neck down!

Hey guys,
I've got some odds and ends parts here that I would like to get rid of.

I'm selling everything here as one lot. All of them have defects or need
restoration. Included is: 1 '55-'56 chevy horn (doesn't work), '57
original
engine fan, '55 day/night mirror (glass needs resilvering and chrome bezel
needs replating), 2 6cyl fuel pumps for rebuilding (one has a glass filter
bowl on it!), 1 6cyl water pump (leaks past the bearing), 1 original '56
T-3
headlight (low beam doesn't work), 1 original master cylinder, 1 '55 solid
mount generator, 1 pair of original '55 wiper arms/blades, 1 pair of
aftermarket wiper arms/blades, a 55/56 dash clock (doesn't work), and a 3
speed floor shifter with linkage and levers. I would like to get $40 for
everything here. Shipping would be extra.

I just acquired a nice pair of original 56 Chevy Delco elcetric wiper
arms/blades. The arms are polished and have the webbing that goes all the
way up to the end. The blades are polished but have the word "ANCO"
embossed
in them. They do match however. Are these blades the originals for a 56
with electric wipers? They almost look like replacements, but my dad's '59

Corvette has the same blades and he has electric wipers.

Hi Bob and to all,

I know this is a little out of the normal realm but I was wondering if
anyone knows of any pictures on the Internet of 1958 Chevrolet Yeoman
Wagons. I would also like any information on them. A friend of mine is
interested in buying one and we would like to learn more about them. What
was special about them or not so special about them? Where did the name
"Yeoman" come from? Stuff like that.

> Bob, the harden valve seats is more myth than fact.

while it may not be necessary to tear down an engine just to install
hardened valve seats, it's always a good idea to install them if the
engine is already being rebuilt for other reasons. they can never hurt.

I will turn the double
> nickel in June and have been using the Amoco super premium 'unleaded'
fuel
> since I was a teenager.

am not 100% sure but unleaded has not been around that long. before the
70's there was mainly leaded gas. i remember being able to get sunoco 260.
now THAT was real gas. not this 'wussy unleaded' ;)

I used this fuel in all my cars which included a
> 55, 56, and 57 Chevys and might I note 'none' had harden seats. I went
to
> the local drag strip often and won trophies with all my cars, especially
> the 57. I turned the quarter in 15.32 secs in a stock and I mean stock
> 283. No one believed it and I was protested by everyone in my class and
> had to tear down my engine to keep the trophy.

if leaded was available back then, wouldn't you have better results with
that? especially 260?

This Amoco super premium is the best gas on
> the market

that depends on where you live. in different parts of the country the same
brands of gas use different cleaners and formulas. also, a particular gas
station may have dirty tanks or a number of other factors that can
influence gasoline.

gasoline is the exact same molecule no matter where it's refined. after it
leaves the refinery it's the additives that make the biggest difference.

now, i am sure that no company will tell you exactly what's in their
gasoline. even if we did know, unless you're a petroleum engineer it's
almost impossible to evaluate which is best to use.

as anyone knows, if you pass by a shell station and a Mobil or any other
brand and they are all within yards of each other the gas all costs the
same. we know gas companies don't lose money - so none of these
gasolines can cost more than the other to produce. if so, we would have
different gas prices - due to more expensive additives.

therefore i conclude that all gasolines are equal.

i would even stick my neck out here and say that of all the gas companies
- shell, mobile, Exxon, sinclair :), flying A :), sunoco, Amoco, you name
it - not every one of these has their own individual refineries for making
gasoline. for example, Exxon may be great at digging oil out of the ground
while sunoco is best at the refining. i don't believe that any one company
can handle every single step. my point is that it's possible that, say
Exxon makes/refines all the gas for some other(s) major brand. or, they
have some major part in the operation.

this is the same as car batteries and tires - there are very few plants
that make these things. most brands buy from one or two manufacturers.

even the off-brand gasolines we see could very well be a major brand. i
believe the smaller companies just pull up with their tankers to any gas
depot depending on who they contract with or what's the best price that
week. so that you may be buying shell or Exxon or Mobil or Amoco and never
know it.

there are some guidelines, however. i would never buy gas (unless i had to
)at some dirty little out of the way station that doesn't pump much gas
and may have dirty tanks or old one's with water. it's best to find any
high volume station.

and if you don't believe me try burning other unleaded fuels in
> a coleman lantern. It is the only pump gas that will burn in these
> lantern.

an ounce of gas is equal to a few sticks of dynamite. NO ONE should ever
use gasoline for other than inside a gas tank.

> Editor's note. Ken makes a good point. All unleaded gas is not the same.
> BOB

see above ;) ;)

most of us here will perhaps swear by a particular brand. but we can never
test properly in real conditions as so many factors change with our cars,
way we drive, etc.

as for me I have always liked Hess. they seem to always have clean
stations and they all have uniforms - kind of reminds me of old movies
where all gas jockeys wore uniforms. the stations have a nice pleasant
color scheme also. ;)

gas stations and the way they looked, the signs, pumps, etc. has always
been a great part of our nation's road history. in fact, even a part of
the culture. a 'safe harbor' where the motorist could always get help or a
map, glasses, etc. ;) while i don't mean any disrespect for any particular
races it does make me sad when you ask a gas station guy something and
they can't speak English or don't understand you.

maybe we should all get together here and demand that gas station
attendants all pass an English proficiency test and learn about all the
nearest highways and streets and how to get there. jyst like cabbies have
to do in most places. ;) ;)

To Larry, Hey, you are right about all the conventions conflicting with
each
other!!! I have wanted to attend a Late Great NATIONAL convention for
years
now, & haven't been able to because they are always about the same time as
the CCI National conventions & I have always put my priorities in the CCI
conventions! & they did it AGAIN this year!!! :-( It's too bad that
these 2 organizations can't be on better terms & work things out so that
their conventions do not conflict with each other. I KNOW that they would
both benefit from this. And both organizations need all the attendance &
help
they can get!!!!!!!! Richard

Hi Bob I just had to comment on Kenneth`s article on hard seats and
Amoco Premium Unleaded . When I was in doing the engine and frame etc.
on my 59 Cadillac cvt , the machine shop tried their darnest to talk me
into letting them put in hardened valve seats , but I was one up on them
, I had talked to standard oil co. and Phillips petroleum co. , as well
as sinclair ,, They all agreed that any engine that was recommended to
burn premium fuel ( or ethal as we use to call it ) would burn todays
unleaded fuel with no problems . Thanks Bob for all your efforts !!

Thanks Bob,

I have really enjoyed the Hard-top vs. sedan observations. One difference
between the hardtop 55-6-7 Chevy that I haven't seen anyone mention yet is
the "dip" in the "hip" of the top of the body quarter panel at the bottom
of
the rear quarter window. The line of the sedans and posts is straighter
and
the hardtop/convertible has a more pronounced curve or dip in it.
