Bob,

You requested some info after posting an item on a"Car For Sale" from a
gentleman in Canada. I have not actually purchased a car in Canada, and can
not
say for certain, however it is my understanding from others who have made
purchases in the past that you will not encounter any real problems
bringing
over an old car like a tri-five Chevy (presuming you have the appropriate
signed
title from whichever Province the car was purchased in). There were no US
FMVSS,
Canadian CMVSS or emissions requirements applicable to these vehicles. Any
of
these (US and Canada requirements do differ in some respects) can sometimes
resent problems on newer vehicles, though.

As far as driving in Canada - no problem at all. My wife and I drive back
and
forth over the border all the time (at least a couple times a week). There
are
great restaurants in Windsor, Ontario! Your drivers license and vehicle
license
plates issued by any US State as well as auto insurance policies is/are
recognized in Canada - as are licenses and plates issued to Canadians when
they
are driving in the US. Be sure to bring your US Passport , Birth
Certificate, or
green card with you though - to avoid problems with US Customs on re-entry.

As for the final say on any possible duties / taxes, I'd strongly recommend
that
you contact US Customs to find out for certain exactly what the situation
is at
the time of your proposed transaction. Rules do have a way of changing over
time.

Editor's note. Thank for the excellent info Roy.

<< as for me I have always liked Hess. they seem to always have clean
stations and they all have uniforms - kind of reminds me of old movies
where all gas jockeys wore uniforms. the stations have a nice pleasant
color scheme also. ;)

gas stations and the way they looked, the signs, pumps, etc. has always
been a great part of our nation's road history. in fact, even a part of
the culture. a 'safe harbor' where the motorist could always get help or a
map, glasses, etc. ;) while i don't mean any disrespect for any
particular
races it does make me sad when you ask a gas station guy something and
they can't speak English or don't understand you.

maybe we should all get together here and demand that gas station
attendants all pass an English proficiency test and learn about all the
nearest highways and streets and how to get there. jyst like cabbies have
to do in most places. ;) ;)

louis >>

Great point Louis, I get so mad when I go to So. Calif. VERY RARELY do I
pull
into a gas station where they speak good English, if any. In 1961 I worked
for a Mobile Station in East L.A. & I'll tell you, If you didn't have your
UNIFORM clean & ready, you best not even show up for work.!!!!!!!! + we
didn't just sit on our a_ _ _s & collect money, we WORKED for it. EVERY car

that came in for gas whether a fillup or just a bucks worth, we at least
cleaned their windows & asked if they would like their water & oil checked.

!!!!!!!!!! + we sold batteries, aniti-rust, trans. fluid, brake fluid,
tires, etc. & mounted & balanced all tires we sold!!!!! Richard

<< Hey, you are right about all the conventions conflicting with each
other!!!

I have wanted to attend a Late Great NATIONAL convention for years now, &
haven't been able to because they are always about the same time as the CCI

National conventions & I have always put my priorities in the CCI
conventions! & they did it AGAIN this year!!! :-( It's too bad that
these 2 organizations can't be on better terms & work things out so that
their conventions do not conflict with each other. I KNOW that they would
both benefit from this. And both organizations need all the attendance &
help
they can get!!!!!!!! Richard >>

Richard,
I agree with you totally. I too have wanted to attend a Bow Tie Convention

but they always seem to be too close together or at the same time. You know

if they were both on better terms they could both benefit from that. But we

must remember the original reason why the Bow Tie & Late Greats were
founded
in the first place. The two clubs will never get along & will continue to
their schedule events at the same time as each other until their members
complain to the Mother Clubs or one of them goes out of business.
The way I see it CCI has done a lot for the 55 thru 7 Chevy in the past &
later on Bow Tie came along & tagged along in the quest to preserve the 55
thru 7 Chevy. Unfortunately today we do not have a strictly 55 to 7 Chevy
Club thanks to the joining of the later years ( 58 to 72 ) but I guess it's

just business.
You know it's us who make up the CCI & Bow Tie Memberships.
If we all Voice our opinions loud enough over this scheduling possible they

will listen.

I really couldn't care what their differences are between them, but they
should grow up. There is no reason why we should be on either side of the
CCI
/ Bow Tie Fence. They are both good clubs & we should be able to enjoy the
benefit's of both clubs if we choose to, but the way their scheduling is we

can't

Wyatt, I believe the wiper blades you have ARE the original type blades for
a
56. The webbing indicates that they are Winter blades, They're supposed to
help keep ice from sticking to the blades in Winter. I have the same blades

on MY 56. If they are in nice cond. (incl. the rubber webbing) & you don't
want them, I would trade you a good pair of regular blades for them!

Hi to everyone:

"Ethyl" corporation did not go out of business but was bought up by a
competitor. Even though I live in Louisiana, home of an "ethyl" plant, I
am
not sure who bought, however.

"Unleaded" gas has been available for a long time as "white gas", at least
since the early 70's (maybe longer), commercially it has been available
since at least 1973 (gulf coast).

All gases the same? At least very similar. During the teens, my dad was
"Pumps" on gas freighters on the western coast. One of his jobs was to add
the additives to the gasoline between Los Angeles and San Francisco in
route on board ship (better mixing) depending on the vendor. (He also
served as a merchant marine during WWI). I suspect that at least some of
this is still occurring. Certainly gas blends differ depending on region
since high altitudes require one combustion rate compared to lower
altitudes (even humidity plays a role).

It appears to me that we are quibbling about roughly a hundred+ $ for
hardened seats on the exhaust valves. Even my engine rebuilder was cool on
the prospect. I've spent $8k rebuilding my car from the ground up (I have
done almost everything myself so this is mostly parts cost); do I really
want to gamble on hardened seats versus unhardened seat? Matter of
perspective.
While I am certainly no expert on all these topics, I felt input based on
my experience, personal research, and personal decisions could at least be
helpful. Everyone must ultimately decide for themselves.

Well, in reference to Richard's Posting that Bow Tie/Late Great and CCI
Conventions seem to be at or about the same times. Unfortunately, you
pretty much have to plan your conventions around WHEN the hotels have time
available, WHEN the local weather is predictably at it's best, WHEN the
local club can host a convention around their already busy schedules and
WHEN the international clubs can fit it into their schedule.

Unfortunately, in most parts of the country, the good weather weekends are
limited, and hotels won't block off their historically best tourism
weekends for a convention that may, or may not, attract a large number of
cars. When conventions were better attended in the 70's, it was much
easier to get a hotel to commit to blocking off a week since they could
almost be guaranteed a sell-out. Also, when you negotiate with most
hotels, you try to get the best rate possible and hotels know that they can
get $125/night from business customers. Why would they want to let their
rooms go for $70/night for classic car people?

Bow Tie/Late Great does have a convention in Baltimore this year from June
15-18 - this does not conflict with any CCI conventions, and Baltimores
Best CCC has a great schedule of events lined up. Contact
aprilg57@juno.com for more info or see your Bow Tie/Late Great magazine for
a registration form.

For those who have never been to a CCI or Bow Tie/Late Great convention -
come on out! They are a lot of fun - we have been doing them since 1972
and have always found a new friend or two and enjoy catching up with others
in the hobby, and there is always more to learn from the experts whether
you have your classic in Show & Shine or in Cruisers Class (or don't bring
your Classic at all!). Don't be intimidated by the 1,000 point judging -
come for the friendship!

Gentlemen, my 15 year old son is in the process of rebuilding the 283
out of the '57 four door sedan he recently purchased. (An unforgettable 1st

have any out of an engine that they possibly had overbored? Any help would
be appreciated, as he is definitely doing this on a tight budget. Also, I
have a set of fiberglass front fenders available in excellent, unpainted
condition if anyone can use them. Suburb of Chicago area.

Hi Bob and Gang,

Reading the past several postings, I see a lot of discussion on the
topics of hardened valve seats and hard tops vs. sedans.
Just to put my two cents worth in the pot......My engine builder
told me that hardened valve seats should only be required if the engine is
being used for hard
pulling or towing situations. Although I am replacing my 461 heads with
Vortecs, the
valves in the '66 vintage 327 looked fine when the heads where pulled. The
car ran fine
on premium unleaded fuels.
As for the topic of hard tops, what would you classify a Nomad? A
two door hard top station wagon? Hee, Hee!

Louis, for the record, Amoco Super Premium has always been lead free long
before the unleaded fuel which you spoke of came on the market in 1973 or
74. Most of we hot rodders called it 'white gas' because it was as clear
as a crystal. Check you Hess brand of unleaded gas in a see-through glass
and see how clear it is. When I spoke of using Amoco super premium in a
coleman lantern, I meant exactly what I said. Maybe you don't camp much
but the coleman fuel is a much higher grade of fuel than your typical pump
gas. If you could afford to run this fuel in you car, it would be similar
to racing fuel and much more explosive than unleaded pump fuel. And just
for this record since you are apparently not familiar with coleman
lanterns, they 'do' have gas tanks; they just are not as large as the one
on my Silverado pickup. As for judging fuel based on the clean stations
with the workers wearing uniforms, I would have to take issue. Most
'McDonalds' are clean and all their workers wear uniforms, but they make
the worst fast food hamburger on the market unless you're a 5 year old kid
looking for the toy in the 'kids meal'. THANKS BOB AND ERNIE for your
comments; I think most knowledgeable people that have tried various fuels
know all fuels are NOT the same. Saying that all gas companies are all
tied together is like saying GM and FORD design each others cars. We all
know that is true, don't we!!! Sorry Bob, but I had to take issue with
Louis. I know what I am talking about and I can prove it with my old LT-1
Vette. Amoco Super Premium is the 'only' fuel it will run on straight from
the pump. Thanks Bob, keep up the excellent work as always, and remember

Preview Channel to see what was playing...it's a 1957 movie , with the star

driving a '57 Ford, basically a Kentucky moonshine runner , he wrecks alot
of
the Fords, the '57 chevies stay pretty intact. :) Got some nice shots of
alot of '57 Chevies in the movie, some as plain undercover 4-door sedan cop

I'd say it was worth buying for anyone's car flick collection. Just thought

Hi Art, I saw your posting on Bob Ford's Chevy List about the removal of
your radio speaker/power unit from your '55.

You should remove the glove box first. You do not need to remove the
glove box door. This will give you room to remove the speaker assembly.
Make sure you have all four attaching screws removed from the speaker
bezel.

Hope this helps,
