At a swap meet recently, I saw a 57 Bel Air for sale at a very reasonable
price. I talked to the owner
and he told me a very strange story. Knowing that you should not believe
everything a seller tells you when they are trying to sell a car, I thought
I would pass it along to list members to see if it could be true.

The man told me that he had a 57 with an excellent body, no rust or any
other problems, but the motor and tranny were both shot. He also told me
the front end needed major repair and the steering was also beyond repair
on his 57. His every day driver was a 90 Caprice which was in excellent
shape with low miles but the roof had major damage. It seem this man was
in construction and he parked his car next to the construction project he
was working on. An commercial air conditioner was being lifted to the top
of a building to be installed when the wire from the crane with the air
conditioner broke and the air conditioner fell on his car (sort of like the
Home Improvement show when Tim let a pole drop on his Nomad). The
construction company had insurance that paid him the total blue book for
the car and let him buy the car back from them for $100.

He had the car towed to his house thinking he would give it to a local
college auto repair program and take a tax write off for it (my guess is
that he would value the car given to the college at a lot more than $100).
When the 90 Caprice and his 57 Bel Air were setting side by side, he
wondered how hard it would be to put the good body of his 57 on the good
frame and motor of his 90. He said much to his surprise, the mounts were
at the exact same location on the 90 as they were on the 57. He told me he
took the body off of the 90 and sold it to a junk yard, then he took the
body off his 57 and mounted it on the 90 Caprice. I looked under the car
and it did not look like the body mounts had been moved.

The engine looked like a 5 liter V8 with fuel injection. The tranny was a
700R4. The power steering and bakes (front disk) looked like they were
correct for a 90 Chevy. The air conditioner looked like standard
GM air conditioner.

Does anyone know if indeed a 57 body will find on a 90 Chevy frame.

Great job on the list Bob.
Regarding the question of glass interchangeability from Rick Stratton, it
doesn't look like station wagon's door glass is interchangeable although a
lot of 55-57 glass is. I found a page that provides a whole list from

Still lots of talk about hardened valves seats. Has anyone actually
experienced
damaged valve seats from running unleaded gas? It sound like lots of
people are
saying you should install hardened valve seats, but no one has offered any
proof
of actual engine failure due to unhardened seats. All heads I have seen
with
messed up seats have been caused by mechanical failure, i.e. piston hitting
the
valve. I have never seen head with seats damaged by unleaded gas.
Here's something to think about for the "heavy use and towing theory."
What
about all of the old gas burning tractors? We have plenty of them here in
Nebraska. My uncle has a 1964 Oliver, he uses it every day to feed cattle.
It
has logged may hours while pulling a plow in the last 36 years. If it has
been
burning Unleaded gas since 1980, its got 20 years on it with no problem!
You
can bet that old binder does not have hardened seats!

I want to hear some war stories about classics blowing apart and leaving
parts all over the interstate after filling up with 87 octane unleaded.

How about something like this: " Last Sunday the wife and I decided to take
a
drive in our $75,000 '57 fuel injected ragtop. We stopped at the local
quickie
mart. I filled up with unleaded for the reasonable price of $1.76 per
gallon.
The wife bought a diet coke and a cosmo magazine. We had driven about 200
feet
when all of the sudden all hell broke loose! The unhardened valve seats
had
failed! This allowed the valves to strike the pistons. Pieces of pistons
and
rods exploded from the engine. This knocked a big hole in the fuelie
unit, gas
poured out everywhere. After a small explosion the wife and I abandoned
the
car. Unfortunately, the car stopped on some railroad tracks. The fire
department arrived shortly after a loaded freight train drove over my
ragtop (I
always wondered what it would look like with a good flame job). All was
lost,
so I thought. My wife had rescued the cosmo from the inferno, after
completing
the cosmo quiz, she informed me that I scored 7 out of 100 for "How does
your
man satisfy you?" I'm still the man I always was - even though my car is
gone!"

Hi Bob and all. I couldn't resist following up on the very
positive comments in the last list by 'Roy R. Nagel' on
travelling to Canada. Thanks Roy. This is a spring board
for me to once more invite all of our '55, '56, '57 Chevy fans
from the U.S. to attend our annual 'Classic Chevy Reunion', Aug.4
to 6th. We move around the province each year, this year may be
of special interest to you for it is being held in the Niagara
Falls area. I have attended many meets, conventions etc. over
the past 15+ years and have found that one of the biggest advantages
to visiting an area this way is that the local hosts can show you
their 'part of the world' so much better than you going there on
your own with the aid of your 'AAA' maps etc. Not to go on and on,
but don't forget the huge advantage you have with your American
dollars (worth about $1.40 Canadian). Activities include: Early Bird
Wine & Cheese; Show & Shine; Sat. night Dinner & Dance; Tour
of the Niagara Region; Local Cruise Night; Googie Bags, worth the
price of admission and more. Please feel free to e-mail me with all
questions and allow me to pay back for the many times I have been
made so welcome in the U.S.

Regarding the CCI vs BTC conventions; Linda Riggs knows of what she
speaks. She's 'been there done that'. I have been a member of these
organizations for 20 or so years and count the leaders of both as my
personal friends. All, in my view, are first class people. I too think that
some attempts can be made to co-ordinate their conventions, but to be
realistic about it, you have to realize that we are talking here about two
organizations who are each others major competitors. Its not easy to
'be buddys' with the fellow who may be seen as possibly taking 'the
food out of your mouth'.

Finally, lets put the hardened seats thing to rest. I agree with those
who
say, if you aren't soon getting a motor job, don't worry about it. If you
are
looking at getting that motor done, what difference will something less
that
$100.00 make? Do it. Hey, guys (& gals) thanks for your ears. JimJ.

Editor's note. I also would like to say that Canada is a great place for
an American to take a vacation.
The American dollar is very strong when you buy Canadian dollars. The
best view of the Niagara Falls is from the Canadian side. Take the boat
tour and get into the falls. It is a lot of fun.

My experience at Toronto a few years ago was very positive. A very clean
large city with friendly people and you can speak the language. Toronto
is a short drive from Niagara. In Toronto, go the top of the CN tower.
It gives you a great view of the city.

I was "flippin' the channels" last nite, and came up short when I saw a
B&W movie with '57 Chevy police cars! Took me awhile to figure out to go
to the
Preview Channel to see what was playing...it's a 1957 movie , with the star
driving a '57 Ford, basically a Kentucky moonshine runner , he wrecks alot
of the Fords, the '57 chevies stay pretty intact. :) Got some nice shots
of
alot of '57 Chevies in the movie, some as plain undercover 4-door sedan cop
cars, others as marked units. I watched over half of the movie 'til the
end, I'd say it was worth buying for anyone's car flick collection. Just
thought

I'd pass it on.

Bob,
This is for both Louis and Ken:
I went to high school in New Jersey and in my senior year (1961-2) I got
my drivers license and a bought a 1958 Thunderbird with a 460 cu. in.
Lincoln engine. On Saturday nights we ALWAYS used to fill up with "white
gas" (Amoco), prior to the prospect of doing some street racing near the
Adventurer Car Hop, because it made the car run better. So the "white
gas" from Amoco was at least available on the East Coast at that time
and already had a reputation and a loyal following. I still burn it
today in the family car, my street rod, '55 Nomad, and '55 Bel Air
Sedan.

Also, these organizations should consider MAJOR shows and swap meets.

Rick,
Yes, the rear curved glass and tailgate glass is interchangeable from
'55
to '57. The windshield is the only difference between '55/'56 and '57.
Make
sure glass from a 4 door wagon is being used on a 4 door wagon! Two door
wagon glass differs from a 4 door wagon, except for the tailgate which is

Thanks to Richard and Donna for replying to my question regarding original
'56 chevy electric wiper arms and blades. Yes, the arms are polished and
look beefier than conventional '55 or vacuum arms. "DELCO" is stamped on
the
underneath. Now the metal blades which hold the rubber squeegee have
"ANCO"
stamped into them and aren't as polished as the arms. They have 2 tiny red

buttons to release the rubber. My dad's '59 Corvette has original wiper
arms
and these same metal blades (also have "ANCO" on them). As far as both of
us
know, these blades are original. Are they? The arms definitely are. I
actually picked these assemblies up on EBay and they were labeled as
"original '56 Chevy electric wiper arms/blades". Thanks...

Will a 292 cid inline 6 fit in the place of a 235, specifically
in a 57 sedan?
I have info on someone with a running 292 for sale, and
the 235 in my 57 is on it's last legs.
Sounds like a opportunity, BUT I've been told that the 292
is about 2 inches TALLER that a 235.
Hence I'm worried that it won't even fit under the hood....
Have any of you tried this or know someone who has?
I've heard that the overall length of the engine and the motor
mounts positioning is the same....
