Does anybody on this list have any idea what it will cost to have a set of
1955 Chevy bumper guards rechromed? These are the guards that go on the
corners of the car below the turn signals. I just bought all 4 and they
really need to be rechromed, luckily no rust.

Editor's note. Call Bob Barnes at 323-754-4126 for a price. Bob only does
show quality work. So you will be getting the high end of the price range.
Bob has a 55 Chevy so he will know exactly what work you want done.

Hi Bob,
I thought that I would offer up my two cents worth concerning the
hardened valve seat discussion. My experience has been that the expense of
converting to hardened seats is not warranted. Along with this conversion,
the concern of the seat loosening and dropping out and bouncing around with
the valve is a concern. I have personally witnessed this several times.
This generally is a problem caused by poor machine shop work, however is a
very real world concern. I suggest that if someone is running heads that
were not built for "unleaded" times, try using a cup or two of Marvel
Mystery Oil per tank. This fabulous stuff is designed as a top cylinder
lubricant and relieves alot of stress on valve seats. My other suggestion
is to buy real Tetra-Ethyl lead additive. This can be purchased from
outlets such as Auto-Krafters and many large swap meets. I generally give
between $18 and $20 per gallon but when mixed according to direction for
104
(R+M/2 method) octane, a gallon will do about 8 tanks. Nothing runs like
lead.
Thanks for indulging me on this subject. I fancy myself somewhat of an
expert making cylinder heads live in today's environment.

Good morning Bob,
just received all your emails with the cars for sale. The bad thing about
that is that as I had read each one it was just another that I could image
sitting in the driveway of my place with all the neighbours wishing they
were me.

Here's a request that I know will probly be one of the hardest you will put
to your members. As I live life in the 50's, being a guy of 24, would
really love to find someone that is willing to sell me an original
LETTERMAN JACKET whether it be a high school or college jacket. I am after
as I say "an original one" .
Keep Rockin,
Many thanks,

Editor's note. Peter, I invite you so submit your address so people will
know where
to send you a jacket if they find one.

Bob, I cannot top my friend's story from Nebraska about the $75,000 ragtop
being destroyed on the railroad tracks because of a failure of unhardened
valve seats, but I do have a story that is a somewhat funny, but could have
been a disaster. I just returned today from the 'GRAND RUN' car show in
Pigeon Forge, TN. Bob, I thought about you because your friend "Dolly
Parton" was there for her annual parade for the grand reopening of
DOLLYWOOD. She still looked as the same ole Dolly. She is like the Dick
Clark commercial, "THAT CAR NEVER AGES". I TOLD HER YOU SAID HELLO! Now
for the story.

Bob, I tried to save the document you just got, but sent it instead. A
computer whiz, I am not!!! Now the story: At the Grand Run there are
litterly hundreds of thousands of people cruising the streets all day and
into the late nite hours, three lanes bumper-to-bumper at about 2-3 mph.
Spectators line the streets with chairs and watch all the cars go by. My
wife, my son, and I were doing likewise when this 68 GTO was approaching
us. Being in such heavy traffic, he was stopped right in front of us.
All of the sudden, as these old cars so often do, smoke began coming out
from under the car and I yelled at him that he had blown a radiator hose.
He sat there for a few seconds and blue smoke began coming from the edges
of the hood, then from the grill. He jumped out of he Goat, jerked open
the hood and it was on fire. He ran back to his car, grabbed a fire
extinguisher, pulled the pin and nothing happened. The guy in front of him
in his 440 'Cuda saw what was happening behind him, jumped out of his car
with his extinguisher, pulled the pin and nothing happened. The fellow
behind him saw all the commotion, jumped out of his street rod, grabbed his
extinguisher, pulled the pin and guess what nothing happened. There was
total chaos. Before it was all over with about 20 people showed up with
extinguishers and I only saw one that worked. They did get the fire out
before too much damage was done, but maybe everyone should check their
extinguishers before going on another trip. I told the GTO driver that I
would buy that old burnt car for $1000 but did not take my offer. He was
not a happy camper. Thanks Bob, keep up the good work, and always
remember, GOD is Love, Ken

In 1990 Cars and Parts Magazine decided to do it's second complete
restoration car in honor of it's 35th anniversary. Over the next 2 years
Cars and Parts had a total investment of over $145K not including
countless
donated N.O.S and U.S. Reproduction parts from numerous vendors and
suppliers.
(Listed in the restoration manual.) The car was named Peggy Sue and
in 1992 it was completed. (See restoration book for complete details.)
They then had a free sweepstakes and Dr. Alan Dozier of Mathews, NC was
the
winner. In 1993 it was purchased by John Langford of Kings Mountain, NC
and now resides in Mooresville, NC. In 1996 as part of the Salute to the
American Automotive Performance and Motorsports Rally, it was one of 5
cars chosen to be put on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington

under the auspices of S.E.M.A. Specialty Equipment Market Association.
On May 15th it was displayed at the Smithsonian and on the 16th it was on

and is
started regularly to keep the seals lubricated. Email Address:

Hi Bob. In response to your question as to whether a 57 body will fit on a
90 Chev frame, there is a company up here in Canada that builds fibreglass
55 and 57 convertibles and mounts them on 77 - 89 full size Chev Impala or
Caprice "B" chassis. They go by the name of Prototype Research &
Development Ltd, 230 Albert Lane, Box 1330, Campbellford, Ontario, Canada
K0L 1L0 phone 705-653-4525 fax 705-653-4800. This note is not an
endorsement of the company, only some information that list members may
find
interesting or useful. I suppose that a real 57 body may just fit on a 90
Chev frame. Bob, keep up the great work on The List. It is greatly
appreciated.

Editor's note. Since that question came up at the Long Beach Swap meet, I
have had some private e-mail conversations with David Carlaw, the president
of Prototype Research and Development.
He has provided me with a lot of information about his products. I invite
David who is now a member of this list to send in an e-mail that describes
his products. I think the list members will be very interested.

Hey guys,
I've got some odds and ends parts here that I would like to get rid of.

I'm selling everything here as one lot. All of them have defects or need
restoration. Included is: 1 '55-'56 chevy horn (doesn't work), '57
original
engine fan, '55 day/night mirror (glass needs resilvering and chrome bezel
needs replating), 2 6cyl fuel pumps for rebuilding (one has a glass filter
bowl on it!), 1 6cyl water pump (leaks past the bearing), 1 original '56
T-3
headlight (low beam doesn't work), 1 original master cylinder, 1 '55 solid
mount generator, 1 pair of original '55 wiper arms/blades, 1 pair of
after market wiper arms/blades, 1 55/56 hood hinge, and a 3 speed floor
shifter with linkage and levers. I would like to get $40 for everything
here. Shipping would be extra.

You asked the question whether a 57 body would fit on a 90 Caprice
chassis. The 5/6/7 fiberglass body spec sheets indicates that they will
fit
either on a 5/6/7 original chassis or install on the 77-90 full size Chevy
Impala "B" chassis. Hope this helps. Dan

gas goes in car tanks. kerosene and other lamp fuel goes in lamps.

gas and burgers.... 2 different things. although, one may certainly get
gas from a bad burger.... ;)

THANKS BOB AND ERNIE for your

hmmm..let's see.....the average car gets 17mpg with amoco.
but only 15mpg with exxon, sunoco, shell, etc.
amoco, and only amoco must have some special, super formula that NO ONE
else has. no sir!
and of course, the average car 'runs better' with amoco
compared to any other. define run better. please refer to independent
studies.

> Saying that all gas companies are all
> tied together is like saying GM and FORD design each others cars. We all
> know that is true, don't we!!!

gas companies and car company designs.....am trying to see the
connection.........

actually, as a matter of fact, many of the major parts are all from the
same suppliers. GM doesn't manufacture airbags. neither does ford.
GM and Ford are basically assemblers. they all buy steel from
steel makers.

at one time there was a big difference in quality, ride, handling, etc.
from a ford or gm. today it's hard to tell the difference.
of course, i am comparing cars in the same price range and full size vs.
full size, small vs. small.

Sorry Bob, but I had to take issue with

> Vette. Amoco Super Premium is the 'only' fuel it will run on straight

and surely most people own an LT1 :) ;)

...283's and 350's, why, they are quite rare indeed!

i bet that there is at least one other LT1 owner who swears the engine
will run only on exxon unleaded.

Hi Bob, just a note to let you and the chevy fans how I really enjoy the
questions and problems that are sent in to you. I located a flipper for my
car through these notes and now I am looking for a real good left door for
a 57 hardtop. I can skin mine, but at one point in time, someone has tried
to adjust the door with a block of wood and the door frame is bent. My body
shop says he can straighten it , but would be better to find a good door. I
am told that a 55 chev door will work and is the same, and also a 55
pontiac hardtop door will interchange. Anybody out there now about this? I
have enjoyed the tri five cars all my life and having retired, I wasn't
going to do another resto, but I found this 57 and couldn't resist. Hope I
live long enough to finish it. Just kidding of course, because around these
fine cars, I feel like Im 16 years old. This is not a frame off, but close
to it. I do things RIGHT!!! Roger in Iowa
