Hello all,

Quick question (boy I love this list)

I have the opportunity/necessity to change out the well aged 235 in my 56
belair (currently with powerglide)

Can some one point me to literature or other resources re:
installation/change over necessities (mounts etc.) for a 350/350
conversion?
My other option is to use the extra 283 I have sitting around and
keep/rebuild the powerglide but I seem to recall a thread about having the
right crank to allow this mating.

I hate to inconvenience y'all by rehashing old issues that may have come up
already. Is there an archive for this list anywhere?

Thanks for all your help (past, present and future)

Bob McNulty
bmcnulty@csuchico.edu

Editor's note. Bob, for a 350/350 conversion from Powerglide, you will
need to side mount the motor and rear mount the transmission. You will
need to change the tanny linkage and also change the indicator in the
speedometer. You may need a new gear ratio in the tranny so the
speedometer reads correctly. Most vendors has the needed parts as a kit.

You only need a special crankshaft if you are changing to a Turboglide
transmission from a Powerglide. You should also be sure you have a Chevy
350 transmission to make installation easy.
If you are going to use a high horse power 350, I would recommend a 400
tranny. I think they are stronger than a 350. Any one have an opinion on
this.

Great list Bob!!

Recently, I bought a 1957 Townsman, very straight, barely any rust-BUT
<Isn't there always a "but"?> I need glass!
The car needs: a windshield, rear liftgate glass, a drivers side front
window, and both rear door windows. The curved glass rear windows are
perfect- thank God.
I was wondering if anyone on the list has some spares that are in good
condition. I plan on driving this car NOT making it a show car.
Also I was wondering if there are any decent restoration/upgrade manuals
that are good. I've already figured out the numbers on the car. But I need
to know how to remove most of the garnish moldings-how to remove them
without destroying them.
OK, one last question- front suspension- should I put a Mustang II stub
from Fatman's on or just go with dropped spindles or???
What do most people put on there? What should I stay away from? Anything
special to watch out for?

Thanks!
Scott in Vegas

Editor's note. To do a restoration, you should have the shop manual and
the assembly manual. Most vendors have them. Two other good manuals are
"How to Restore your 1957 Chevy" by Classic Chevy International and Peggy
Sue 1957 Chevy Restoration by Cars and Parts Magazine.

Dear Bob,

As always your e-mail Chevy List is one piece of mail that I look forward
to
week after week.

This week's List, however, was especially poignant, with the letter from
Joyce Smith, regarding her father, Ralph Page. As us 'baby boomers' grew
older, unfortunately, we are having to say our 'good-byes' to those we love

most, our parents.

Since March of '97, I have lost my father-in-law, father, brother, best
friend, and stepmother. It has not been an easy time. Joyce's letter,
sharing
with us the joy her father got looking at the '55 Chevy video, was very
heart
felt.

Once of the things I've enjoyed the most while attending Classic Chevy
meetings and reading the weekly e-mail, is the bond that exists between the

members and list readers.

Joyce's letter simply emphasizes that we should live our life to the
fullest
and never take anything for granted.

Have a great week!

Fred Vail
Nashville, TN

Editor's note. Joyce Smith's e-mail was the first one that brought tears
to my eyes when I read it.
My condolences on your loss. I have had similar experiences myself in the
last few years.
The loss of a loved one is never easy to accept. I tell people in the
retirement planning classes I teach that they should enjoy their life when
they can. Don't wait until they are too old to take that cruise or trip
they always want to take.

Hi Bob and everyone,
I have a few comments and questions. First off i have to say that the

Grand Run (i think that was the name) in Tennessee sounds like a blast!
How
come they don't have anything fun like that here in Southern California (or

at least none I have heard of). I guess the hot august nights I have
heard
about is something like that. I haven't been to it. Does the guy who
wrote
about the Grand Run have any pictures of the cars he'd like to share? Also

what is a good brand of fire extinguisher to buy? I just had my car
painted
and need to buy one. I guess I should buy a few since it sounds like they
aren't that reliable when you need them!? I know some are for the house
and
some are for cars. Is there a difference?
Does anyone know where I can buy a blue (to match my Silver Blue paint

on my 64') fuzzy mirror decoration that goes around the back the rear view
mirror? I have a pink one I found at Moon Eyes but it doesn't match!
Bob, weren't you supposed to get your car painted at D & D? What
happened?

Editor's note. Dale was so busy, he could not get to my car for 9 months.

Hey Bob,
Yeh, stupid me, got all excited seeing all the adds for the Tri 5 for
sales.
My address is: PETER HALL

Just read Kenneth L Ogle's email about the fuel crisis. Over here in Perth,
Australia, they have just changed us over to the LRP (Lead Replacement
Petrol). It is the worst pile of political garbage they have ever tried to
run past us. My car would run better on sugar water. It pops, pings, and
just generally has no power and guzzells the juice. I have a stock 283 and
I am the Vice President of the 55,56,57 Chevrolet Club of Western
Australia. We are hastily trying to find an octane booster to safely run
with the junk they supply at the pumps. There are a few products around the
guarantee you this and that but nobody seems happy.
As to the Mc Donalds gas burgers----we have always said that if only we
could harness the gas from the burger and run the Chevy on that. No more
problems, and its also cheaper than Nitrous.

In reply to Marilyns email about the 55 door, if a Pontiac will fit? Here
in Australia we had only built 55-57 210's. Now some guys over here are
running Pontiac doors but you have to weld up the the trim holes. From
memory they follow there own lines not the 5,6,7 Chevy. They have even gone
as far as to say that the roof of the Pontiac will fit straight on to the
Chevy boby.

Many thanks,
Peter Hall.

Keep up the good work. I have just finished rebuilding my 55 Sport Coupe
and am having trouble with the stock power steering. When the motor is
running the wheels turn to the right by themselves and it is hard to hold
the steering wheel to stop the wheels turning. I have bleed the system but
it makes no difference. Can anyone offer any advise. Thank you

Editor's note. It sounds like you have a stuck valve somewhere in the
system.

Bob,

Just thought I'd let you know that I just bought a 265 power pack
engine
with powerglide attached from a list member's advertisement. If you
remember
his wife said the engine has to go so he sold it for $100.00.
I picked it up 2 weeks ago and have verified that it is an early 1957
(or
late 1956) 265 and was running when pulled out of his car about a year and
a
half ago.
I now plan on doing a complete rebuild myself, but as I have never done
this before I will be looking for a lot of advise and help.
I would appreciate any advice on which technical manuals are best for
this
engine rebuild.
Kim

Editor's note. I hate to discourage you from rebuilding an engine your
self but I do not see how that is possible. You can do part of it your
self but to rebore a cylinder requires a large expensive machine.
GOOD LUCK

Bob, great job as always!

I wanted to make sure everyone knows about our club's upcoming Car Show.

This year it will be held May 13, 2000 -- SATURDAY 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
For many years it has been called "Crusin' Bricktown". This year we are
changing the show format to make it much better! It is now called
"Crusin' OKC."

The show now covers most of Oklahoma City. There will be three cruise
areas to attend. Each area will have activities, shops and music. The
cruise will take you past the Murrah Building Memorial. Each entrant
will receive a plaque with a photo of them by their car.

There will be 30 special award trophies.
You must cruise to all 3 sites to win $5000 Total giveaway in 8 - $500
and 4 - $250 increments.

It will be a great show!

This is in response to Doug Court's question or request for pictures of a
Nomad interior. There is a book " 1955 Trim Instructions Manual 4650203"
that
is a reprint of the Chevrolet instructions for the interior of all Chevy
models. The copy I have says that CCI obtained a copyright release from GM
and
reprinted the book though it looks like it was done many years ago. The
Nomad
interior is included. Detailed drawings of the seats (even to what is under
the
seat covers) , side panels, headliner and cargo deck are included. I don't
think there is a similar book for 56 or 57 interiors but Doug wanted a 55
interior. I found this reference source to be invaluable when I restored
my 55
Handyman.

The unleaded gas issue seems to not go away...I cannot understand why a
giant firm such as General Motors saw the need to put hardened seats
(using induction hardening) in 1971 and later vehicles in order to
prepare them for unleaded gas/catalytic converters in 1975. That LT1
vette is, as I understand it, a '72 model. Guess what - it has hardened
seats from GM! I don't know about Oliver tractors, nor do I care to,
but I put unleaded seats in my rebuilt heads as I feel it is necessary
due to the lubrication lack of unleaded gas - if nothing else. But,
your list people should do what they want to - its their heads, their
engine and their $75,000 convert on the tracks. But, is an ounce of
prevention worth a pound of cure?

Several months ago folks on the list were looking for Tri-tech's third
brake light (the one that went in the rear gold v). I don't think
anybody could find one. Well I found three at a great show held in
Tucson by the local CCI chapter - the Chevy Showdown!
The dealer has both the silver and the gold third brake light from
TriTech and at the show he wanted cost plus 10% which works out to
$93.25. They look brand new still in the mint green packaging.

Doors on tri-fives are basically not interchangeable except for the same
body style. The two door sedan as a metal frame completely around it,
and is somewhat taller overall than the hardtop & convert. The convert
is alone, because there is no roof flipper like a 2 door hardtop has so
no indent in the vent glass post for such a flipper. Nomad & convert
doors will interchange but you must change the door glass & framework.
