Bob,
I didn't miss a post it was just in my bulk email box (probably due to

my rambling on hehe). I also understood that Dale had an illness. They
should either not take in as much work or hire someone else. I think
possibly that they could use some schooling on body work. It was almost
like they just didn't proof their work... Look at it in the light and most

of all take pride in their work. Oh well, I am over all happy but it sure
was a long process.
I'm glad you did go over and see what was going on. There is one 55
or
56 that has been there for months longer than mine and they are about half
way through with it. I'd love to talk to the owners of those cars that are

still there not being worked on...
Thanks for the email Wild Bill. I'm glad to see that it's not just
females who get the run around.....
Happy Easter everyone!

Bob,

Just thought I'd let you know that I just bought a 265 power pack
engine with powerglide attached from a list member's advertisement. If
you
remember his wife said the engine has to go so he sold it for $100.00.
I picked it up 2 weeks ago and have verified that it is an early 1957
(or late 1956) 265 and was running when pulled out of his car about a
year and
a half ago.
I now plan on doing a complete rebuild myself, but as I have never done

this before >>

Hey Kim, long time no see (Pasadena). Got to go with/ Bob here, unless you
have
all the tools & knowledge, have it done. By the time you buy all the parts,

send it out for machine work, etc. Won't be much more to have it done.
E-mail
me & I'll hook you up w/ my engine builder (he does stock stuff too)

Bob, I'm sure some of your readers might have some opinions regarding
silicone brake fluid. One of our club members asked me to pass this on, in
hope of solving his dilemma. Has anyone experienced a similar problem?
Thanks,
Jim Boehly
President

Ted Larson writes:
<<Last fall I replaced my '55 Chev master dual cylinder, and all wheel
cylinders. Since changing out brake cylinders is not my favorite hobby,
I used silicone brake fluid to avoid the problem of corroded brake lines
and cylinders. A few weeks later, I noticed that the master cylinder was
leaking out the back, and the two front cylinders were also leaking.
Before assuming that I had gotten multiple bad cylinders, I asked the
parts shop if use of silicone fluid could be causing the leak. They said
no, and exchanged all the cylinders for me.

I just got the car out of winter storage, and was surprised to have a
sharp pull to the left when braking. Tonight I pulled the wheels. The
left front cylinder is wet, the right front cylinder is slightly wet, and
the brake drum area is "smudgy" rather than dusty. The rears are dusty
dry, but the left rear cylinder has a trace of wet. The firewall under
the master cylinder is wet.

Am I really unlucky, or is there a problem with using silicone
fluid? I did not do any disassembly of any of the cylinders before
installing them, nor anything else unusual that I am aware of. Am I
further ahead to clean the silicone out of the lines, and re-do the job
with standard fluid?

In advance,
Thanks,
Ted Larson

>>
Editor's note. I read somewhere that if you switched to silicone brake
fluid, you had to change all of the rubber in the system to a type of
rubber that would not be eaten by the silicone brake fluid. I will try to
dig that info out and get it out on the next list.

Bob, thanks for putting up with our stupid comments; you take it better
than I would. To Sandy Pierce, I hate to burst your bubble, but not only
do I have the 1972 LT-1 convertible (built in 1971) that runs on 'unleaded'
Amoco Super Premium, my beautiful wife drives a 67 Vette convertible with a
327/350 hp and it also runs on Amoco Super Premium 'without' those GM
harden seats that you spoke of. Her car may not be worth $75,000 yet, but
it is close and guess what, it has not had an engine failure in its 33 year
life span, pretty good record.

Bob. It's EASTER SUNDAY and I have a story to tell. It's not a pretty
story and I litterly broke down and cried when I heard it, but it has a
beautiful lesson and I must share it with my friends.

I heard about a man that worked at a slaughter house years ago. Back then
they cut the cattle's throat and just let them bleed to death. His job
was to actually do the cutting. He said that when the steers would come
into the shute they would kick, jump, bellow, and fight any way they could.
One day they began to slaughter sheep. He said the first sheep walked in
to the shute and they always close them up so they can't fight or run, but
he said to his surprise the lamb walked up to him and just stood there and
looked at him. He said just like the cattle, he took the lamb by the loose
skin under the throat and cut it with the knife. He said the lamb never
made a move or sound. As the blood began to leave the lamb's body, some of
it got on his hands and what happened next changed his life forever.
Without a word the innocent lamb began to lick the blood from his hands
before it fell. He said that he quit his job immediately because that was
more than he could take.
JESUS was the LAMB of GOD led like a sheep to its slaughter up Golgotha's
hill. JESUS never fought or spoke an angery work, but simply with to the
cross and shed his blood for our sins and died that we might live. 2000
years ago today, JESUS arose from the grave and assended to his FATHER in
Heaven and sits there today making intercessions for us. Today JESUS lives
in my heart and will live in your heart if you will invite him in. JESUS
loves you and so do I. GOD bless and keep each of you is my prayer, Ken

Thanks Bob as always; you do a Great job!!! If you could send this out
today, I would appreciate it. I should have thought of it sooner.

Thanks for this site, BOB !!! I am starting a frame off resto on a sedan
delivery and can't make up my mind which way to go engine wise. I am
torn between the 454 and a 350. I know the end value of the car would be
higher with the big block as well as the "muscle value". But I'm not
sure of all the problems I may encounter trying to put it in. As for the
350 I know thats almost effortless but just not quite the same
"feeling"...Has anyone out there have any feedback from experience or
something I am overlooking ?? Please get back to me

BOB,

If someone answered this question already please disregard it.

However, I am still interested in finding out if there are better, more
sturdy horn bearing bushing assembly being manufactured today that fits
into
the stock 1955 steering column.

My little car has been a bit under the weather lately -- I either have a
burned valve or a blown head gasket nearest we can figure. Since my eBay
sales have been very bad recently I have not had the money to get it fixed.

But I will want to replace this part once it gets back on the road and if I

can find a NOS part or a better replacement than is available from Classic

Chevy International, DANCHUK or other vendors.

Unleaded fuel on GM 71 up cars...It became obvious to auto manufacturers
in the late 60's that pending Federal legislation would require the use
of catalytic converters and that these will not work with leaded gas as
the lead fouls the catalyst and plugs up the system. As a side benefit,
it also lubricates things like seats and guides. But, it became
expedient to make cars that accepted unleaded gas ASAP so that the
majority of vehicles on the road when unleaded gas became mandatory were
ready for it. The changing of attitudes about the environment tied in
with this type of thinking and helped boost it. The 73 fuel crisis added
to it But the thinking then was that valve seats needed to be hardened
to accept unleaded. Possibly it is the same as we have discovered about
R134A, that conversion from R12 freon is really pretty simple compared
to the horror stories of 1992 about a conversion cost of a thousand
dollars or more to update the A/C on your earlier model to the
"environmentally friendly" (and less efficient) R134A. The lack of data
either way about the need for hardened seats is reason enough for me to
include them in todays rebuild.
The worst thing about Charlies message to me was the picture (the same
one as on the front page of this mornings newspaper) on a site he
referenced (www.junkscience.com) showing a Federal agent wearing his
protective head and face shielding & body armor & military type
camouflage clothing holding his hi-tech assault weapon grabbing a six
year old boy out of the arms of the man who saved his life several weeks
ago ....and above this picture the phrase "Why We Need The Second
Amendment"....To me this is a horrible example of government power being
misused. I know Bob's list is not the place for politics, but just
think of the raw governmental power exhibited, and think of what it
could be if they decided to do that about you. I looked at that picture,
and I felt shame. Janet Reno learned a lot from El Paso seven years ago.

Bob, I have a transmission question. My 57 Powerglide has a bad tendency
to
push fluid from the filler tube when the car is backed out of the garage.
Driving it soen the road and back seems to keep it from "burping". The
transmission seems to operate very well (as long as I have remembered to
refill the fluid). I have asked the group about this before and got
several
responses. I can get a rebuild kit and install it, but I don;t know for
sure
that the problem would be fixed. My question now is about replacing or
restoring the transmission.

I am most interested in having a road-worthy driver that appears as
original
as possible. Is the 57 PG worth more as a trade for someone who wants to
do
a restoration with year-appropriate components (and use the proceeds to
replace the tranny with a 350) or would it be cheaper to rebuild the
transmission?

I am operating on a "single income, two children" budget.

Tom Garrett in Wetumpka, AL
tjjpgarrett@aol.com

Editor's note. Tom this is just my opinion. Others may differ and I invite
their comments. If I were in
your situation, I would get a rebuilt 350. They are available everywhere
and people know how to rebuild them. It is hard to find someone to
rebuild a original Powerglide now. Both Jegs and Summit have new
Powerglides but they cost more than a 350. A 350 does not look like a
Poweglide so people can tell your tranny is not original just by looking.
