    Hay Bob,
I converted my brakes to silicone. First remove all rubber components, then
flush the entire system with alcohol to rid it of any trace of old fluid,
(they don't mix!) blowing it out with compressed air and replacing ALL
rubber parts. It works fine now. Be sure to write 'silicone fluid' on the
master cylinder so no one tops it off with Dot 3 or you'll be doing the
    whole process again...

Hello...Bob, the same lame brained engineer that deleted drain
    plugs off
transmissions probably also deleted the handy drain plugs off gas tanks. He
probably also is the one that deleted the little carry loops off of
mattresses, although that may be some conspiracy perpetrated by
    chiropractors.

Hey everybody..I would like to trade a brand-new complete lt.green and
white upholstery kit for a two-door 56 Chevy for same type of kit for a 55
4D SW any color as I haven't decided on color yet(although I am leaning
towards pink and gray)....I have several 55-57 parts cars if anybody is

    Bob,

I still have my 1956 265 c.i. two barrel V-8 for sale. It was running well
when we removed it from the car. It has original exhaust manifolds, oil
    bath
air cleaner, generator, starter, etc. I would like to get $450 for it plus
shipping. I also have the front spindles with brakes and drums from the '56

-good shape for $65 for both plus shipping. The steering column is
    available
too. It was a three speed standard. Most parts for the shifting mechanism
    go
with it for $50. I am in Kansas City, Missouri at (816) 734-8822.

I want to thank you, John, Steve, Mike and all the rest for responding
to my request for engine stamping codes. I checked Mortec and Chevymania
and both had full listings. At one time I had an address that listed
both codes and suffix codes and I think it was something like Alltel but
it will not come up npw. If anyone has a listing for suffix numbers
which appear on the front right bank of the engine, please let me know.
I realize the engine stamping code on the rear of the engine is much

    Hi Bob,
I know what you mean about recommending someone to do work. Lisa's
problems are much like mine with my '55 210. I had my '64 Catalina and
my '85 Dodge van painted at a local shop. They did a beautiful job on
both. Two other people in my club had their cars, (a '41 Chev and a '67
Galaxy-frame-off), done there. They were very happy with the work. Even
my sister-in-law, who's very hard to please, was happy with their work.
When they did my '55 the driver's door came out a different shade
than the rest of the car. Even with the electronic paint matching system
they couldn't get it quite right. They ended up painting the whole car
    again.
A few months ago I backed the car out of the garage to do some work
under the dash. A small tree limb fell on the right front fender leaving
a spot the size of a quarter right down to bare metal. There was also a
very small ding in the driver's door from a careless spectator at a car
show. I have a two-toned car again! Their electronic paint matcher must
be a piece of junk and I told the owner as much. He agreed to paint the
car over, (this time I'm going for a blue body with a pearl white top),
for his cost. The shop has always been one of the better ones in the
Baltimore area for a good paint job, and I'm going to let them do the
'55 again because it will not cost too much this time. However, if the
car doesn't meet my expectations, they won't get any more
recommendations from me. Just like anything else, Caveat emptor! Wild

Hi Bob, just wanted to talk to my fellow chevy fans today. I needed a left
hand door for my 57 2dr hardtop, and found a classified ad in my magazine
from classic chevy international. I called the guy, who by the way lives in
Wis. Rapids, WI and he said he had one left which was very nice. We talked
a while about the door, and believing him , I sent him 550.00 for the door.
I received it today and what a disappointment!! My body guy said it will
take more to fix that door than the one I have on the car. It had been
reskined at a point in time, what a lousy job. I called the guy back and he
denies it had a skin put in on it, and hung up. The freight was 118.00, so
now I have 668.00 in a door that is no better than what I have. Just a good
reminder for you guys selling parts out there, tell your buyer what the
part is really like, and maybe he will buy again from you. Live and learn I
guess. I really think that if you buy a part from someone that has a
classic, they will probably be honest. There is so many guys out there
getting parts from wherever, and pushing them any way they can. Well,
enough of my bad luck today. Keep up the good work Bob!!! Roger in Iowa.

Ok, fellows, here's an apparently rare? car, a '57 sedan delivery with

Would it be possible to have the Delivery Model number on the cowl tag that

would authenticate this car? Anyway, this came off my Oletrucks email

    Hi all,
I work with this guy and he is a big wig here at work.
He has a 1957 sedan delivery, he said that it was rare because it has the
glass panels on the side and not the metal, it looks like a 2dr. station
    wagon
with a sedan delivery rear. This car has had been media blasted and all
the body parts replaced that were bad, it has a light coating of rust from
sitting in the humid air here in Ga. The car is setting on a rotissery at
    his
shop, He has all the parts except the engine and the trannie. He has 2
    extra
1957 frames and rears, he has a bunch of parts from his last resto, a 1957
bellair convertible that he sold, and a 1957 parts car. He said that he
    has
two of every thing (steering wheels/columns, (both auto and standard), as
well as dash pieces and other misc. pieces. The price is a mere $6,200 (
    he
might go down a little, but I don't know.) The car is obviously not
    drivable
and would need to be picked up, (Dalton, Ga. - 25 miles south of
    Chattanooga,
Tn. Right on Interstate 75.) If anyone is interested give me a buzz and I
might be able to get you some photo's with my digital camera.
It sounds good, and he has no reason to lie, I work with him quite often.

To Tom Garrett, Re your powerglide burping. This problem has been around
forever and is no reason to get rid of an operating transmission. There is
    a
check valve available that goes, I think, into one of the cooling lines
    which
will cure the problem. Classic Chevy did an article years ago describing
    the
fix and should have the part as well as any "good" transmission shop. Good
    luck

If anyone is installing a 4 speed behind a 400 small block, the casting
number on the GM flywheel is 3978457. It is still available from GM for
about $192.00 list, but I have found two in recent weeks, used.

    Hi Bob-
In response to the 57 powerglide that burps transmission fluid, I have a
similar problem in my 56. It seems to lose fluid out the filler tube on a
random basis, just sitting in the garage...especially in the summer. I
have never actually seen the fluid burp out, there is just a puddle on the
floor by the filler tube. This is an original car with 107,000 miles that I
am restoring. It runs fine and shifts perfectly. It's a 6 cylinder. While
I'm at it, what's the consensus on what to do about blow by out the draft
tube and oil filler cap. I know the standard answer is to redo the whole
engine, but it runs great and purrs like a kitten so why tear it all down?
I've seen hoses that route the fumes back to the intake manifold and was
wondering how they affect the running of the car. I welcome your
    responses.

Every parts store I have ever bought brake parts & fluid from seems to
want me to change to silicone fluid, I have always declined as I keep my
    car
original. Now after reading about your problems I know why, they want to
    sell
more parts!!! I suggest you stay away from the silicone unless you
completely replace all brake components and if you change back to the dot 3

fluid make sure you really flush the whole brake system including the brake

lines. Mixing dot 3 and silicone will cause the brake fluid to gum up and
    clog the system.

The way it was explained to me, automatic transmissions do not have a
    drain
plug because it is important to change the filter every time you change the

fluid, so you are forced to remove the whole pan.
If there was a plug, the filter would stay in forever. There would be a lot

    more warrantee disagreements.

I have a question for the list, why aren't the original 49-53 GM Hydramatic

transmissions popular anymore?. During the 60's all the racers that could
afford the 4-speed Hydramatic (B&M Hydro-sticks) bought them. They , unlike

the modern GM 4-speed automatics , like the 700r4 & the others, had a close

ratio set of gears , 4th gear was not a overdrive.
The B&M Hydro-stick was the thing to die for in the early 60's. I can still

hear those 40's Willys going through the gears , in my head!. Maybe the
    Lenco
was the nail in their coffin?

With regard to your response to the fellow experiencing the "burping" from
    the
PG filler tube when backing out of the driveway: I would totally agree with
    your
    recommendation on a replacement with a THM350 - if replacement/rebuild are
    indeed necessary.

However, in view of the members statement that the PG seems to be operating
    fine
otherwise, I'd question whether this is really necessary. My experience is
    that
fluid usually burps out the fill tube only when the fluid level in the pan
becomes too high - and that this can occur for any of three main reasons:
overfilling of the transmission in the first place; fluid draining back
    from the
torque converter when the vehicle sits for prolonged periods, or; expansion
    of
the fluid due to an over- temp situation. I'd say that the last listed is
    likely
not the case as we appear to be talking about "burping" that occurs when
    backing
out the driveway - shortly after the vehicle has been started. The second
    could
be the case - depending on whether the "burping" occurs all the time when
backing out the driveway - or only after the car has sat for over three
    weeks
without being used. Most likely though, I suspect the trans may simply well
    be
being over-filled inadvertently. Often the fill tube may be incorrectly
    seated,
the dipstick may be an incorrect length or the marking misplaced. Parts
    could
well not be correct for the application after these 33 years. I'd first try
maintaining the fluid level a bit lower as an experiment - and see if
    things
change at all before deciding on major surgery.

And, if the problem is simply a matter of fluid draining out of the
    converter
after a lengthy period, I'd recommend simply starting the car and letting
    it run
once-a-week or so - even if you are not going to drive it. If the fluid is
draining out of the converter too quickly (and I have seen this after long
service), replacement of the converter only (not the complete transmission)
    is
another possibility. Granted, the whole trany has to come out in order to
accomplish this, but the parts cost would be considerably lower.

Re your question as to why there is often no drain plug on "modern"
    automatic
transmissions: I've not been personally involved in decisions regarding
    this
matter, but I would note that there are costs involved with producing a
reinforced section for the pan to receive the plug, assembling that section
    to
the pan, welding (or brazing) it together, for manufacturing (or
    purchasing) the
drain plug itself, etc. Also, providing a drain plug does introduce a
    potential
    source of leakage, i.e. the plug can be miss-installed (cross-threaded);
installed loose; the pan/reinforced area joint can be flawed, and so forth.
    But,
the opportunity to save a few cents per unit is, I believe, the major
motivation. I agree that the provision of a drain plug makes it easier to
    drain
the fluid without getting the stuff all over the garage floor (and I prefer
    to
have a plug myself), but I can see advantage (to the vehicle manufacturer)
    in
    eliminating them.

Also, many modern transmissions have an internal replaceable filter, and
    removal
of the pan is required anyway for filter replacement. Since fluid/filter
    changes
are not required all that frequently, it is probably not worth the effort
    of
adding a drain plug to an existing pan, but this too is a possibility if
    one
    wants.

In regards to the plug in the automatic trany. I have the same question.
    I
figure that if it would cost GM $0.50 to install a plug in a trans pan and
    they
produce a couple million of them, they save a big chunk of change by not
installing them. They don't care if it makes a big mess when you change a
    trany
filter and there's no plug in the pan!

    way
    > to
    > > the Senate after receiving unanimous support during an Assembly Floor

    > > The measure would allow vintage car owners the option of using vintage
