I have meet many people at car shows that have told me they want to buy a
TriFive but they do
not know enough about cars to make an intelligent purchase. I told them I
would get information
for them and this is a request for that information. Most of these people
don't want to do a
restoration. They just want to buy a car that is ready to drive. Some want
a show car and some
want a daily driver.

What would you advise someone to look for when the buy a TriFive? Likewise
what should they
avoid when buying a TriFive? Are there models to avoid?

My big thing when buying a car is rust. If a car's body has a lot of rust,
I always think it will be
expensive to repair the damage. Is that a good assumption?

Also, how do you feel about the motor? Is a V8 more desirable that a 6?
What is your opinion of
an automatic versus a stick shift? Is a car with modern power steering,
brakes, etc more or
less valuable than one that is original?

Your comments please.

Also, several people have told me that if you live close to the border with
Canada, you should buy
your TriFive in Canada because the US dollar is strong versus the Canadian
dollar. The US dollar
is worth about $1.40 Canadian dollars the last time I checked. Does that
mean that Canadian cars
are a bargain to the American buyer?

where
are they at? from davesJunk@aol.com thanks

Editor's note. Several books I have say the VIN number is on the top side
of the frame just below the drivers seat. I looked at my 57 and I can
barely see a number. It looks to me as if you would have to
take the body off to get a good look at that number as it is VERY faint.

This is about a polished Billet Grille for '56 Chevys.

Several weeks ago I asked if anyone had advice for me. The result was our
getting a '56 billet grille manufactured by Stull Industries in Riverside,
California.

They'll sell at bargain prices to jobbers so you may have to ask for one in
your area. We got ours for less than $130, including shipping. The 800
number for Stull is 1-800-227-9206.

One piece of important advice is that when it comes time to ship the grille
be sure to have the grille reinforced and packed in bubble wrap. Our first
one came damaged and we had to have it replaced. The whole transaction
took about 7 weeks.

The grille is polished aluminum with black powder-coated background. When
you stand back and look at the grille, all you see are the horizontal bars,
no vertical ones. It's really cool. I can send a photo via e-mail to any
serious '56 owner that would want one for his custom Chevy.

Stull may very well have similar grilles for other Chevys. You'd have to
call and ask them.

Good luck.

Greetings from Nashville, TN, Bob and "Friends,"

HELP! I'm in need of any leads or suggestions for selling (or trading) my
'48 Buick Sedannette so that I can buy, or trade partially for, a classic
'55
to '57 Chevy.

This is an absolutely superb '48 with a beautiful interior of rich gray
fabric, great glass and chrome, body is straight, WWW tires, cantilever
hood
works like a charm--as does the AM radio and heater--and the signature
'bombsight' hood ornament looks great! It is an original 'black plate' CA
car
trailored here in '98. I'll 'throw in' the two or three trophies the car
has
won. Car is garaged.

Hemmings has these cars going for $17k to $20k and many of those are
Midwest
with rust from ice and snow winters. I am 'wide' open as to a fair 'cash'
price or a trade in allowance. SOOOOOOOOO,

If any of you folks have had any luck selling cars other than Chevy, if you

are a wholesaler or retailer who will take this beauty in trade (cash
difference) for a '55 to '57, or if you want the perfect car to restore or
rod, this is THE one. Remember: '48 was the last 'official' year for 'hot
rods.'

Please contact me day or night at:

Saw lots of cool stuff at Carlisle Friday, a late model Chevy truck with
'57 Chevy side trim and paint to match selling restored Coke machines and
coolers, some new '55 Chevy truck key chains for $1 with detailing that'll
blow you away ( ok, made in China, but so what? ) , got a few decent
tri-chevy books. I actually spent most of the day looking for AMC /
Rambler
stuff, but I'm still a finned freak as well. Gotta get back on my Chebbies
someday soon....
There was a fiberglass dealer there, selling hoods and bodies...a side
business they had was go-kart bodies, and they had a '57 Chevy convertible
body, as well as mid-60's vettes. About $175 each. Lets see, row J or K,
near
front entrance? Something like that...all white fiberglass, some grey. Hard

to miss! Lots of tri-chevy chrome as usual, and body parts, but I was
looking
for AMC stuff.
Anyway, other items of interest...I found in Toys R Us ( on the trip
home
) a cool 3-4 year old child plastic car the child sits in and foot-pushes
around, and it's a red plastic '57 Chevy! They're $50, pretty cool! I just
happened to walk down the pre-schooler isle, never hardly go that way,
either. Figured I'd report on it to the members here on the list, in case
you
want to help influence that little tyke! LOL. Well, that's my "big"
Carlisle
report, what else can I say? Have a great weekend, people.

Bob, I got some great answers from the List on my burping Powerglide. Most

of the information was published in the last posting. I want to publicly
thank everyone who put in their "two cents". One suggestion was that my
transmission is equipped with an improper dipstick which would lead to
overfilling. I have thought about this before. Does anyone have a way to
ensure I have the proper dipstick? Even an overall length and distance for

the "full" mark would be great. Thanks again, Bob. This list is proving
to
be an invaluable resource of information.

This is for Jerry in Woodbridge, VA. I recently sold a '57 sedan delivery
w/glass sides. In fact, the windows rolled down half way. It had been a
government car, Forestry Service, I believe. It was coded as a sedan
delivery on the data plate. Was originally black w/tan interior. I sold
it
to a gentleman from Atlanta at the recent Run to The Sun at Myrtle Beach.
It
may still appear on www.chevywagon.com. Is now Turquoise & black. My
understanding is that there were less than 100 (93?) made for the
government.
I have had several "experts" tell me "it's a station wagon with sedan
delivery lift gate 'cause I got one like it". They quietly walked away
after
looking at the data plate. Jim. Raeford, NC.

Bob,
The use of Vintage plates are varied from state to state. In Ohio, one can

purchase vintage plates. But the wonderful part of the law is that if one
purchases the vintage plates with a request to display license plates from
the year of the vehicle, this can be done. It anyone is interested in the
procedure, just let me know. It is quite simple.

I am running these plates on my '57 (even though it was an ugly color -
white letters on a reddish brown background). Many people in Indiana ask
me
how I am able to get away with it. At one time, there were some devoted
hobbist who worked with their state legislature to sponsor this bill.

This adds icing to the cake on our old cars.

<< Hi Bob,

Regarding Ken Long's inquiry about an air filter element for a '57 4
bbl. air cleaner:

Take that oil-bath element out and put it on a shelf somewhere (messy old
things!!) Get a Fram CA151. They fit perfectly and have a rubber lip top
and bottom to finish the seal. I got mine at Pep Boys, but other dealers
around the country will also have them. As I recall, the original design
was for a '78 Lincoln. There aren't too many of those left anymore, so I
wouldn't be surprised if Fram quit making the things soon. Better stock

RE: draft tubes, blow by etc.
Marc Glassoff requested info on draft tubes etc on his 6 cylinder. I
have a 56 265 V-8 with 70k (original miles) Yes, my engine is getting
tired,(44 years is a long time in car years) but when it starts and runs
sooo smooth, I am hard pressed to drop in that 350 waiting in my garage.
Anyway back to blow-by. In the BIG RED tech book by CCI in the engine
section, it is shown how to install a PVC valve in the valve cover and
connect to the base of the carb. It also mentions plugging the draft tube
opening in the block with a brass plug.
I used a rubber expansion plug from Pep Boys in mine. This arrangement
not only eliminates the draft tube puddle, but the smell as well. The
only drawback I have found is my PVC cannot keep up with the blow-by and
the valve cover gaskets tend to leak a bit, but like I said..it fires and
runs soooo good. Hope this helps.

RFI to long time rebuilders. There is not much I am afraid to do on my
car, but I do have one question about late engine to early trans I have
not found an answer. I want to install a 350 V8 and mate it to my
original 3 speed. My question is how does the starter mount (block or
bellhousing? original/late flywheel?) and can I leave the radiator in the
original position. Inquiring minds want to know..thanks in advance.

Lastly I am going to the Western Street Rod Nationals here in Bakersfield
this weekend... 500 -1000 street rods all in one place..wow...if anything
applicable to 55-57 is there I will report back to the troops.

My dad is a subscriber to your 57-56-55 Chevy List. When I asked my dad
the answer to a question, he did not know the answer but he said send it to
you and you would know the answer.

The question is not about a Chevy but a 1955 Plymouth. I am a senior in
high school and I am enrolled in an auto maintenance course. The class is
mostly men with a few girls in the class. In a class discussion about cars,
someone said Plymouths had a push button arrangement to change gears on the
models made in the 50's. I thought I had read somewhere that the 1955
Plymouth had a gear selector on lever on the DASH. All of the guys in the
class and the male instructor said the 1955 Plymouth had a push button gear
selector on the left side of the steering wheel.

I hope you can tell me I am correct about the gear selector on the 55
Plymouth because if I am correct, all of the guys in the
class have to take the girls to dinner at the finest restaurant in Little
Rock.

Betty Jones

Editor's note. Betty, look at the Little Rock yellow pages and find the
best restaurant in town because
you are going to dinner with the boys in your class at their expense. You
are correct about the
55 Plymouth automatic gear selector. It was a lever on the right of the
steering wheel and it was
on the dash. The push button was introduced in 1956 in the Plymouth. I
think the dash lever was
only used 1 year. Does any list member know for sure.

Enjoy your dinner. As a side note. I am glad women are taking auto
maintenance courses in high
school. It is great experience for life. Here is some Plymouth trivia for
you. On the 1954 Plymouth cars with Hy Drive automatic transmission, why
did it take gallons of oil when you changed the engine oil?
