Hey Bob

2 questions for your. How can I tell if a car has a lot of rust? I have
heard people paint over rust.

Also, can you buy a new crate 283 motor?

John

Editor's note. One sure sign of rust is bubbles in the paint. List
members, what are good ways to detect rust?

Hi Tri-5ers,

Since there's a discussion on the Mopar shifter, here's the scoop. In
'54 all the Mopars, (Plymouth, Dodge, DoSoto, Chrysler, and Imperial),
had the shift lever on the column. In the '55 model year they installed
it on the right hand side of the dash, where it would impale anyone
unfortunate enough to be thrown forward in a collision. In the '56 model
year the lever was replaced by the push button selector. Hope this
helps! Wild Bill

Hi Bob,

We've been discussing air filter elements over that past few days. A good
friend has a '56 with a 4 bbl. carb. He's a member of your list, but
doesn't like to write e-mails, so I'll do it for him. Here we go:

He says that several years ago he took his air cleaner to the K&N people
and tried filter after filter until he found one that fit perfectly. He
says it's number is A090A6. He was surprised that it was so tall, but he
says the diameter of the filter is such that it fits correctly in the
tapered can. He also tells me that, as with many other filters, there is a
rubber lip, top and bottom, that seals out any leakage.

Remember I'm only the messenger here, so I can't swear to any of this, but
Joe's car is perfect and if he says it, I believe it!

Best,

Don Kent

Bob,

My 1955 Belair tredvac power break unit needs rebuilding and as I did
rebuild one in the 70's I figure I still could, But I can't find a Rebuild
kit to do it with. Does anyone know who might have a complete rebuild kit?
I know everybody says to just send in my old unit to CCi or Bow tie Chevy
and I will get a like new rebuilt one back ready to install. BUT that cost
$200.00 which I hate to spend when I know for a lot less (it should be
about $50.00 total) I could do it myself.
This is one problem with our hobby, not being able to buy some parts
individually the way we use to. In the 70's parts were impossible to get,
but as clubs like CCI and Bow Tie started having parts remanufactures and
NOS parts started coming out of the woodwork parts hunting became a lot
easier. But now it seems that there is a trend starting up that makes
rebuilding things yourself almost impossible, you have to get an already
rebuilt part and hope it was done right. That may be alright for the big
money car restorer, but a lot of us like to do our own work and maybe save
a
little money along the way.

Hi! Bob and Tri5 Chevy car Buffs
I saw an email sent to the forum by Jim & Carolyn about a Polished
Aluminum Billet Grille By Stull Industries. I have and been emailing them
about the new grille this past week. Stull Industries has a website
http://209.1.206.107/stull.htm for everyone to check out. On a hunch
since,
I've been purchasing a lot of items from Summit Racing,
http://www.summitracing.com/. I found they just started to carry the Stull
product line. I called and was able to special order the polished aluminum
grille for $113.69 plus $6.95 handling fee. Should take approx. 2 weeks for

delivery. Stull makes the grille assemblies in "Tubular chrome", "Brushed
Aluminum" & "Polished aluminum".They also make an assortment of products
for
trucks and other cars too.
I also want you and the forum to know about a problem I had with Lokar
Products. I ordered the aluminum billet accelerator for the Tri5
Chevies. This item was supposed to bolt in the stock location and be mated
to an accelerator cable system. Well when I tried to install this kit it
lined up low and behind the left valve cover of my 350 chevy. There was no
way I could possibly attach the cable system at that location. I purchased
the pedal assy. from Summit Racing for $91.95 plus $6.95 handling. I called

Lokar's tech department long distance with my nickel 4 times to get some
help with this setup. I talked to them and I was assured they would help
me,
to use their kit. They would modify the arm so I could use their cable and
pedal assy. Never once in our discussions was there a mention of added
cost.
I took some dimensions and called them back. The tech person had to figure
out how to make up the parts to make it work. He also needed approval from
his supervisor, to make sure it was safe to use. The tech called me back
later on the last day to say he could make the modified parts. He also told

me that I would have to send him the existing upright pedal arm so he could

put it towards the "Cost" of making up the new part. I told him you must be

kidding, I paid almost a $100 for a kit that was supposed to fit in the
stock location and be able to use a cable system. There was no way I would
pay for anything more. I called Summit Racing and told them the item was
not
able to work on my car. They let me return it and reimbursed me for return
shipping too. Next time I'll let you all know about "Vintage Air" and
"World
Products". Goes to show you there are still some companies that are
customer oriented, like Summit Racing. Sorry for the long email but I had
to
let the members know.
Thanks for a wonderful forum of dedicated car enthusiast.

This is a follow-up on the '56 billet grille. It's polished aluminum with
black powder-coated backing.

One of the good Chevy guys I sent photos to, etc. called Summit Racing and
got a super price quote: $114, plus $7 order fee. If you're interested,
call Summit at 1-800-230-3030. Tell them you're interested in the '56
billet grille from Stull Industries. Also, specify part #4001-P. Allow 2
weeks for delivery.

Again, I don't know about years other than '56, but you could inquire.

Good luck to all and good night.

I may be mistaken, but I think I saw a '57 Chevy sedan delivery with glass
sides running on EBay. As a matter of fact, it's on there right now and it

still has 7 days to go. I was looking at the pictures and thought it was a
150 wagon, until I saw the picture of the rear. Check it out The item
number
is 323165673, or type in '1957 CHEVY WAGON' to locate it on EBay.
