Here is some 50's trivia for you. My son loves the reruns of the Andy
Griffith Show. He thinks he has seen every show. When I ask him if he
has seen the ones in color, he tells me there were none in color.
They were all black and white. I admit my 60 year old memory is bad, but
I think I remember shows in color. Does any one know for sure?
============================================
I saw one on-the-air a few days ago that was in color....
Also, I work at a TV station collecting/ cataloging old video clips, and
I have a recorded clip of an episode in color. It probably ran LATE in
the history of the show, because Opie is talking about wanting to go
to college when he gets out of school.

Hi,

I have a 57 with 283 PP and Turboglide. I rebuilt this unit during
restoration but could never find anyone or any NOS servo piston wear rings.
I re-assembled unit with the original and other than a little extra end
play it seems to run OK. Do you know of any NOS Turboglide internal parts?

Hello Bob,

I have been enjoying you list quite a bit! In fact, it is your list that
I
found my '55 BelAir coupe in San Francisco.

I am concerned with an issue and your list - though. It seems that there
is an "increasing amount" of "Non Chevrolet" material being posted. I know
there is always "that one person" who doesn't think it will hurt - but I do
not agree with this practice - and I think it may continue to occur.

This will detract from the core purpose of this list - which you originally
intended.

My suggestion - if it isn't a '55-57 Chevy related topic - then shelve it.
Those people can find assistance on the Internet with the other groups.
Don't get me wrong - oldies questions about music and trivia are not the
concern - it is the Chrysler and Ford questions that bother me.

I see a parallel here with the recent decision to combine "all years" of
Chevrolet under one banner by Late Great Chevy. Here we have a similar
interest of one manufacturer and quite a few members of LGC were very upset
with it.

Otherwise, I enjoy the list - keep up the great work!

Best regards,
Oliver

Hi Bob

Great list. You are providing a wonderful service for us "car people". It
seems that no matter
what the question, someone has an answer for it. Your list is also a lot
of fun to read.

I have been collecting cars for many years. The questions and answers
about 50s cars really have my
interest. I have a 55 and 58 Chevy but I am interested in all cars of the
50s. I print out every list I
receive and take it to my car club meetings. I belong to several car
clubs. Your list has been
responsible for many of my fellow club members buying a computer and
getting e-mail. You
many not know it but some of your list members that are in my clubs do not
own a TriFive.

However, they very much enjoy your TriFive list. A lot of what they learn
from your list applies
to their cars also. You are to be commended for not having any
restrictions on who can receive
your list. We all have something to share with out fellow "car people"

G'Day Bob, I am amazed at some of the things people ask about on your
great
site, from time to time. And how you try & answer as many as you can, if
you
can to try & help some people out. YOU
ARE DOING A GREAT JOB MATE, I ALWAYS LOG ONTO BOB FORD NEWS.

Do you ever get a laugh out of some of the questions people ask ? I don't
mean to put anyone down or to offend anyone in particular, Most readers &
those that reply seem to
be in the age group 25 to 65 reading between the lines most seem like they
love their cars and
understand the basics when it comes to ,looking to buy a car, or, restore
one or search for parts
etc.

Like you I would advise anyone who does not have somewhere to work on a
project car and the basic knowledge,& tools etc . To go out & buy a running
car ( if they know how to check something out before they buy that is) .
Bob
I agree with you RUST is the number one thing anyone should look for no
matter how much money you wish to spend , that goes for a project or a
runner (driver).

As you guys live in the U.S.A. ( and are I assume all car nuts, looking
for
Parts or 55-57 Chevs, just like us here in Australia) . I am really amazed
at some of the strange
questions asked.. like "how can I tell if a car has RUST in it ? " If any
one has been
around these cars for a few years & gone to swap meets etc it is not hard
to
check for rust, as most all rust in same spots on these
cars. I have been to many swap meets at LONG BEACH, POMONA, CARLISLE HERSHY
etc and CAN NOT BELIEVE HOW MANY PEOPLE SEEM TO KNOW NOTHING ABOUT WHAT
THEY ARE LOOKING AT, AND WHAT TO LOOK FOR, LET ALONE WHAT TO PAY FOR
SOMETHING ! ( a
reasonable price that is ). Remember the Seller is there to sell, & hopes
he/she does not have to take his "bargain home today" So the B.S. flows
like water over Niagara falls !!

AT SWAP MEETS YOU HAD BETTER KNOW A LOT ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR
BEFORE YOU GO, AND HAVE A REASONABLE IDEA OF THE COST TO REPAIR SOMETHING
ALSO, AS YOU NEED TO GET THERE EARLY, CHECK THE OBVIOUS FAULTS(all 40-45
year old cars have them and a lot of so called restored ones also).

HOW MANY OF YOU YANKS SPOT A NICE NEW PAINT JOB & ASSUME IT IS A RESTORED
CAR??? PLENTY IS MY GUESS, PAINT DOES HIDE A LOT, BONDO &
UNDERBODY SHULTS ARE SURE SIGNS OF " YOU BETTER LOOK REAL CLOSE AT THESE
AREAS THIS STUFF IS CHEAP & NASTY TO HIDE RUST....HIDING IT IS NOT FIXING
IT
!!

FOR WHAT ITS WORTH ..HERE ARE SOME SIMPLE SUGGESTIONS ( FOR ANY BUYER)
FORGET THE PRICE ASKING FOR THE MOMENT OK. CHECK THE FOLLOWING.

(1) AT FIRST LOOK DOES IT LOOK GREAT (or could look like a good project
car)??

(2) QUICK LOOK AROUND THE CAR CHECKING HOW STRAIGHT THE PANELS ARE, CHROME
.POT METAL , BUMPERS ETC TYRES WHEELS ETC, ANY OIL DRIPPING.

(3) Quick look inside , is it tidy, clean ,original style etc,

(4) TRY & GET A GOOD LOOK UNDERNEATH IF POSSIBLE CHECK THE BOTTOMS OF THE
FLOOR PANS , THE FRONT WILL BE THE WORST IF RUSTED ESPECIALLY UNDER HEATER
AREA. IF YOU CANT SEE TRY & FEEL WITH YOUR HAND...YOU ARE LOOKING FOR
PATCHES, SHOTY REPAIR PANELS FITTED OR EVEN CARPET HANGING THRU THE FLOOR.
DON'T LAUGH I HAVE SEEN MANY BEAUTIFUL SO CALLED RESTORED DAILY DRIVER CARS
IN THE USA THAT MUST HAVE COST THE OWNERS AT LEAST TEN GRAND TO PAINT TRIM
CHROME ETC & THEY DID NOTHING ABOUT THE FLOORS, ONE I SEEN WITH NEW CARPET
OVER A 6 inch square HOLE !!! FEEL IF THE FLOOR PAN SIDE BRACES ARE IN
TACT or RUSTY. THESE AREAS ARE NOT REAL BAD IN CALIFORNIA CARS ,AZ, NM. BUT
YOU STILL GOTTA LOOK, ANYTHING EAST OF CALIFORNIA YOU BETTER LOOK.. AS BOB
SAYS RUST REPAIRS DONE RIGHT ARE VERY EXPENSIVE.
TAKE A SMALL MAGNET WITH YOU & RUN IT OVER THE LOWER DOOR PANELS OUTSIDE &
FENDERS IF THERE IS BONDO IT WILL USUALLY FALL OFF( TRY NOT TO DAMAGE THE
DUDES PAINT WORK OK HE MAY GET MAD)

(5) OPEN THE DOORS ..CHECK FOR LOUSY PAINT OVERSPRAY ON WEATHERSTRIPS ETC,
MOST PAINT SHOPS DON'T CARE TO MUCH FOR A CHEAPIE JOB. CHECK DOOR FRAMES
FOR
RUST OR SIGNS OF BONDO.
LOOK IN BEHIND THE LOWER DOOR HINGES AT INSIDE CORNER OF FRONT FENDERS
YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE THE RUST IN INNER FENDER BRACES ( NOT MANY TRY
FIVES DON'T HAVE ANY HERE, LOOK FOR BONDO CLAWS ALSO. CHECK FLOORS UNDER
CARPET IF YOU CAN. TRY & SEE UP BEHIND HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY IN FENDER TOP
CORNER THEY RUST HERE A LOT ALSO.

(6) CHECK INSIDE TRUNK, WHEEL WELL, SECTION BEHIND TRUNK REAR PANEL WHERE
BOTTOM OF TRUNK LID CLOSES. CHECK BOTTOM INSIDE OF TRUNK LID FOR RUST, NO
RUST OR SIGNS OF BONDO.

(7) CHECK ALL GLASS FOR CRACKS ETC, LUCKILY ALL GLASS IS AVAIL CHEAP, BUT
NOT REAL EASY TO REPLACE YOURSELF.

(8) MOTOR ..IF IT IS ORIGINAL WITH ORIGINAL GEARBOX & REAR END YOU HAVE A
REASONABLE RARE CAR THESE DAYS AS MOST HAVE HAD ENGINE SWAPS.

LAST ...IF YOU CHECKED OUT ALL MY SUGGESTIONS, YOU SHOULD HAVE NO EXCUSE
IF YOU TAKE HOME A DUD OR A NIGHTMARE PROJECT, AS YOU WILL ONLY HAVE
YOURSELF TO BLAME. MECHANICAL PARTS FIX EASY BODIES ARE HARD & EXPENSIVE
THE LEAST WORK THEY REQUIRE TO MEET YOUR STANDARDS THE BETTER..

BELIEVE IT OR NOT ,WITH A LITTLE PRACTICE YOU CAN CHECK ALL THE ABOVE IN
ABOUT 3-4 MINS if you CONCENTRATE & DON'T GET DISTRACTED.

THERE ARE A FEW EXCEPTIONS TO THE ABOVE..LIKE ANY CONVERTIBLE IS WORTH
RESTORING AS THE PRICE OF A RESTORED ONE DONE RIGHT IS ALWAYS HIGH. IF YOU
CAN AFFORD THE COST & LAID UP TIME OTHERWISE FORGET IT.

OF CAUSE IF YOU ARE INTO THESE CARS & OWN ONE OR MANY, YOU ALREADY KNOW ALL
THIS. RIGHT. BUT FOR THOSE THAT DON'T OWN ONE & ARE WANTING ONE THEN I HOPE
I
HAVE PASSED ALONG SOME HELPFUL HINTS.

I GUESS I WILL GET A FEW COMMENTS ALSO GOOD OR BAD I CAN TAKE IT GUYS AFTER
ALL THIS IS A OPEN FORUM ..RIGHT.

WELL BOB I HOPE THIS IS NOT BORING YOU & YOU CAN FIT IT IN YOUR NEXT
COLUMN.
THANKS MATE,
REGARDS JOHN.. CAIN.. DOWNUNDER IN AUSTRALIA. 10 MAY. 00.

<< Hi Bob,

We've been discussing air filter elements over that past few days. A good
friend has a '56 with a 4 bbl. carb. He's a member of your list, but
doesn't like to write e-mails, so I'll do it for him. Here we go:

He says that several years ago he took his air cleaner to the K&N people
and tried filter after filter until he found one that fit perfectly. He
says it's number is A090A6. He was surprised that it was so tall, but he
says the diameter of the filter is such that it fits correctly in the
tapered can. He also tells me that, as with many other filters, there is
a
rubber lip, top and bottom, that seals out any leakage.

Remember I'm only the messenger here, so I can't swear to any of this, but
Joe's car is perfect and if he says it, I believe it!

Hey Bob,

I was talking with Jon Pierson and he said you know tons on the tri fives.
I
have a 56 wagon and I am in the process of restoring it. I am having it
done
frame off style in Victorville, and having it all sandblasted. I am
thinking
of putting a 700R tranny in it and putting disc brakes up front. I am also
putting in a 605 steering box with an Ididit steering colum. The brake
lines
and gas lines, and gas tank will all be new along with new glass. I want to

put American Torq Thrust II on it 16x7 in front and 16x 8 in the back! I am

also lowering the car 2 " and moving the shocks via a shock bar in the
back.
Is there anything that I should know about regarding my car vendors, or the

things I want to do to the car. Oh, I am also putting KYB shocks all the
way
around.

Any input would be most appreciated.

I need my stainless polished or refurbed and I also need a new bumper in
back!

>List members, what are good ways to detect rust?<

Get yourself a good magnet. Wrap it in a thin piece of soft cloth, so
you won't scratch the finish, then wipe down the whole car with the
magnet. The magnet won't stick to spots where there is plastic body
filler, a sure sign of previous rust or body repair. Note: this won't
work on a Corvette! :)

I decided to pass this on after reading about a wagon/delivery with a one

>From the San Francisco Chronicle: "Chevrolet - 56 Nomad - no engine/trans -

The car is NOT a Nomad, if it was I would have bought it. At first glance
I
thought it was just a 2 door wagon but I am not familiar with the one piece
rear door/tailgate. The car has glass in the areas behind the doors. The
front sheet metal looked a little tweaked and what was left of the interior
appeared to be velour in origin.
