I am back from Honolulu and getting adjusted to the time change. I had a
great time in Hawaii.

I went to the USS ARIZONA Memorial and took a tour of the USS MISSOURI. If
you ever visit
Honolulu, I highly recommend you take these 2 tours. The Arizona Memorial
really brings home to
you the high cost in human life of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

me. I have a friend that is trying to find out the value of a 57 chevy
fuel injection system. He says it has a tach and injection drives on the
distributor. That is about all I know about it. He is not on the
Internet, but I can get some more info if needed. I would appreciate any
help. Thank you, Richard.

I recently started receiving your list. I am currently building a 56 sedan
street rod. i moved the existing wells in a few inches, lowered the car a
couple of inches, and plan on discs all the way around. Now that I am in
assembly mode I am looking for a couple of parts and have a some questions.
Parts:
- Looking for just the plastic plug on the main wiring harness that goes
through the dash. The harness is good, but the connector had melted some
time inf the last 40+ years. Somebody has to be making them as the
reproduction harnesses come equipped.

- Kick panel vent cables

- Heater control levers/mechanism and cables (no air)

Questions:
With the rear springs moved inward and the rear wells widened, does anyone
know what the largest wheel/tire combo can be fit. I know a 12.5x29-15
Mickey Thompson will fit, wondering if a 15.5 would fit if I purchased a
wider rim. I have yet to purchase rims/tires or narrow the rear-end some
I'm open to all options.

Does anyone know when Cragar Mach 8 rims were sold. The car I'm building is
an ex-strip car and I'm trying to date the rims that were on the car when
purchased.

Greg

Editor's note. I got my heater control levers/mechanism and cables from

Dear Bob,
Thank you and your service for the information, this is great stuff.

Thank you Steve Pratt at Authentic Auto of Mesquite,Texas.

I have two questions.
Number 1. What is the largest 14 inch radial tire can I put on a 57 Bel
Air?
Coker makes 4 sizes in the 14 inch X 75 from 195 to 225 in the WWW radial.
I will be using my
stock rims. Currently I'm riding on H78 X 14 WWW bias ply. Any input would
be appreciated. I
understand that the 7.50x14 in bias ply was the stock issue but I've heard
so many good things about a
radial changeover.

Number 2. The 57 Nomad had stainless steel ceiling ribs or bows. Did
Chevrolet ever put three
stainless bow/ribs in a hardtop or am I looking at a customized interior ?

I want to strongly support Bob and what he puts out on this list. Being on
this list is like finding a
gold mine as it is a gold mine of information. I work as a reporter for a
newspaper and I know the
large amount of work it takes to put out an Internet list like this one.
Just like you may not be
interested in every article of a newspaper, you may not be interested in
every post in this list.
However, many people will be interested in the post. I do not know if Bob
has a background in
Journalism, but I can tell you he does an outstanding job putting this list
together.

This kind of reminds me of a story about the man who found the largest gold
mine in California. He went to town looking for some one to help him dig
it out. The first person he offered 1/2 of the mine if he would help him
dig out the gold. His reply was, "picks and shovels are expensive", find
someone else.

Hello Bob,

I have been enjoying you list quite a bit! In fact, it is your list that
I found my '55 BelAir coupe in San Francisco.

I am concerned with an issue and your list - though. It seems that there
is an "increasing amount" of "Non Chevrolet" material being posted. I
know
there is always "that one person" who doesn't think it will hurt - but I
do
not agree with this practice - and I think it may continue to occur.

This will detract from the core purpose of this list - which you
originally
intended.

My suggestion - if it isn't a '55-57 Chevy related topic - then shelve it.
Those people can find assistance on the Internet with the other groups.
Don't get me wrong - oldies questions about music and trivia are not the
concern - it is the Chrysler and Ford questions that bother me.

I see a parallel here with the recent decision to combine "all years" of
Chevrolet under one banner by Late Great Chevy. Here we have a similar
interest of one manufacturer and quite a few members of LGC were very
upset
with it.

Otherwise, I enjoy the list - keep up the great work!

Best regards,
Oliver
aka bowtieollie@chevytalk.com
------------------------------ >>

Bob, My opinion is, Oliver is gettin' a little critical here! I feel that

everything you print on your list is of interest to somebody, & I don't
feel
that you are turning your list into a Brand X car list !!!!! I find little

mention of other types of cars & when there is, there is good reason for
it! If a guy wants to sell a Ford OR Chrysler product, why NOT list it!
If
he had no interest in Chevys, he wouldn't be reading your list! Who knows,

he may be selling these cars so he can buy a tri-five Chevy!!!! I'm not
interested in EVERYTHING on your list either, but SOMEONE is!!!!!!! So if
there's something on the list that doesn't interest you, all you have to do

is SCROLL DOWN to the next letter!!!!!! Richard

Re: Registering your car for use by movie producers, pr firms, special
events planners, etc., just a couple of points of caution: 1. You may
not get paid; 2. Your car insurance is probably null and void.
Regarding getting paid, I have no reason to question the integrity of
Motorhead City, Wheels for Reels or the firms taking part in their
registry, but I do know the entertainment world has more than its fair
share of con artists, deadbeats and outright thieves. My car club
learned this the hard way. A promoter engaged us to take part in a
special event that was to net our club about $4,000. To make a very
long story short, we were stiffed and never paid. Yes we sued, yes the
judge ruled in our favor and yes the judgement we received wasn't worth
the paper it was printed on. You can't collect from a bankrupt deadbeat
shyster. Lesson learned -- get paid up front in cash!
Regarding insurance, most policies, especially collector car policies,
specifically exclude using your vehicle for commercial ventures -- even
if the proceeds are going to charity. If money changes hands, the
insurance is no good. You may be told that the event sponsor has ample
insurance to cover anything that could go wrong at the event, but what
about getting to the event and getting home? At the very least, ask
your insurance agent if you are covered for the activity in question --
don't just assume you are.

Editor's note. Excellent advice Bob. List members, please remember that I
will never put out
to you anything that is a fraud, but there are some things that I can not
check out. So just because
something appears on this list, do not assume it is a good deal. Check it
out before you proceed.

Bob 'n All:

I am shopping for a clean (rust-free) pair of '57 hardtop door shells
anywhere near (within 500 miles?) Reno, Nevada. These are for my next-door
neighbor's BelAir that he bought in Ohio and trailered home, only to find
lots of metal cancer in the quarters and doors. He doesn't need windows or
any of the trim (interior or exterior) -- just the door shells. Can anyone
help him out? I'll forward any messages, as he is not Internet active, and
has not found any of our characteristically rust-free parts cars around
northern Nevada that can donate a pair of doors.

Thanks in advance, gang!

YES! some of the Andy Griffith shows were in color. The show ran from Oct.
3rd 1960 to Sept. 16th 1968. The ones on TV all the time are the shows with
Don Knotts, (Barney Fife). Don left the show at the end of the 65 season. I
believe the color shows started in 66. At the end of the 68 season Andy
Griffith decided to leave the show but CBS kept the cast together and
continued the show as Mayberry R.F.D., all those shows are in color. R.F.D.
ran from Sept 23 1968 (the show that Andy married Helen Crump) to Sept. 6th
1971.

<< Hi Bob,

We've been discussing air filter elements over that past few days.
A good friend has a '56 with a 4 bbl. carb. He's a member of your list,
but doesn't like to write e-mails, so I'll do it for him. Here we go:

He says that several years ago he took his air cleaner to the K&N
people and tried filter after filter until he found one that fit
perfectly. He says it's number is A090A6. He was surprised that it was
so tall,
but he says the diameter of the filter is such that it fits correctly in
the tapered can. He also tells me that, as with many other filters,
there is a rubber lip, top and bottom, that seals out any leakage.

Remember I'm only the messenger here, so I can't swear to any of
this, but Joe's car is perfect and if he says it, I believe it!

Bob,

I gave Don Kent the info on the air filter element that I found to fit the
56
four barrel air cleaner. The element is a K&N filter # A090A6. I have no
idea what,if any, Fram element fits. The K&N element is a well-known
cleanable element available at swap meets or parts houses specializing in
better after-market parts. You don't see a large selection at Pep Boys,
etc.

hoping that someone out there can help a guy save a buck or two

looking for a pair of belair quarter panel aluminum inserts

i already have the original ones installed but after going to so many
car
shows and seeing these shiny new ones on other cars, i just have to
have
new ones or a great set of used ones

i just can't see paying $500.00 bucks for them

i already put out a lot of money to restore this beauty

if you know where i can get them please e-mail me at

creanie@bellatlantic.net

thanks,

rob crean
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------

Rob,

Look closer at those shiny inserts. I'll bet you they don't look exactly
like your originals! There is a compound curve on the original inserts,
i.e. it's curved in two different planes. The aftermarket inserts were
made from flat stock with a slight kink at the point where the fin curves
in. If a good body man formed the new piece VERY carefully it's possible
to make the curve smoother, however it still won't look the same as the
original because it's made differently. The original one was extruded.
The aftermarket one is cut, or ground, with a burr wheel. It makes for a
very different look. Also, the emblem and script on the aftermarket
inserts is brassy-colored gold pot metal. The originals were gold anodized
aluminum.

$500 is a "light hit" for inserts. When, and if, they show up, NOS ones go
for about $3000 a pair!

If you can find a decent looking set of original inserts, try to polish
them up the best you can. Blue Magic makes a very good polish. It's
available in both automotive stores and places like K-Mart, O.S.H., etc.
You can get replacement scripts and emblems. They'll be pot metal, but you
can make them look more like the originals by spraying them (lightly) with
Krylon Matte Finish (stock #1311) before you install them in the inserts.

To r&r your inserts plan on a real long day of work, by the way. There are
only four screws holding the inserts on, but you have to remove the back
seat to get to some of the nuts that hold the stainless trim on. You also
have to remove the gas filler box, or swing it back out of the way, because
there's one @#$%^&* screw behind it that you can't get to any other way.
When I did it I had to remove the back bumper and the drivers' side tail
light housing in order to get at the lower screws on the gas filler box.
Nasty job, but the car looks better afterward.

Or, you may want to think again about replacing your inserts!!

Good luck,

Don Kent
