Hi Bob
I was wondering if you or anyone else knows where I can get a blue
convertible top for a 1957. I was told that CARS only makes them in
white-black or beige now.
Would appreciate any suggestions on that.
Thanks and keep up the good work

This weekend, trying to drive a couple hundred miles in stop and go traffic
with the mercury up to 102 degrees was an adventure in pacing and
overheating. I was quite concerned I was going to boil dry waiting to pay
the toll on the Golden Gate bridge. Fortunately, all is well, but I need
to
make some upgrades. I'd really like some advice about cooling, from those
of you who have dropped in a big block. My stock cooling system just can't
cut the hot weather. I'd like to be able handle the lengthy idling of
cruising Hot August Nights and add A/C to my car without cooking my engine.
I plan to install a Vintage Air system for the A/C, and a large electric
fan. I think I also need a larger radiator, and maybe a fan shroud. Also,
I think the electric fan may require a change of the alternator (voltage
regulator). I'd really appreciate some recommendations. And as always,
thanks Bob for such a great list.

Thanks,
Dave

Agree with you 100% re the Arizona Memorial - a very moving experience and
a
"must see" if one ever has the chance to visit our 50th State.

I last visited back in 1988. Oil was still then coming up from the sunken
ship.
Is this still the case?

Editor's note. Yes, you can still see oil coming out of the Arizona.

Bob and List Members,

I have a question for you. I recently purchased a 350 four-bolt main Chevy

engine. It was bored 40 over. My question is about the cam. The only
markings or name on the cam was 286 Enforcer H06. Can anyone tell me who
made his cam so I can find out about the timing, valve settings, etc.

Thanks again for all your help

CAUTION! When putting radial tires on stock rims, the rim could

Hi Bob & all.
I was surprised that none of the 'experts' had much to say over the past
week or so regarding the use of silicone brake fluid. For my two cents
worth-
I did a complete brake job about 10 years ago now and used silicone fluid.
As I recall it was a b-----. of a job bleeding the system for I believe the
consistency
of the silicone is a bit heavier than the regular fluid, but other than
that I sure
am glad I used it. I average around 3000 to 4000 miles a year in my ' 55,
putting it away for about 6 months due to the climate around here and I've
had
absolutely no problems of any kind. My main problem I had previously in
other
old Chevys I've had was the deterioration of the rubber components (mainly
the
'boots') from the vehicle sitting for such long periods. What a pain it
used to be
when within a couple of years of doing a brake job, pulling the car out
after winter
storage only to have one or more of the wheels sticking due to bad
'boots'. Anyway,
my advise to anyone is to 'go for it', go silicone.

That was 'a shocker', in the last list, where Kim mentioned the
potential
problem with mounting radials on stock wheels. I never heard of cracking
of the
rims (wheels) due to extra stress from the radial sidewalls. I've had a
set of
Coker wide white wall radials on for 3 years now and 'so far so good'.
Question-
have any of the list members experienced this problem? Although my tires
were
professionally mounted and the wheels appear to be in good condition,
should I
now be concerned about doing 70-75 mph going down the freeway??
Thanks to all contributors. JimJ.

I want 160.00 for the grill and clock. I also have a 55-56 speaker grill
with original clock that is good shape, but, I don't know if the clock
works. I want 65.00 for the grill and clock(no guarantee for working or

Bob,
You're doing a great service to us Tri-Fivers...keep it up! Question: I
have a '55 Nomad and have just moved the springs under the frame using a
spring pocket kit from CCI (not a simple chore) and 2" lowered springs
(front and rear). I want to put 17" wheels all the way around. I don't
want rubber band tires, what I'd like is some rubber between the rim
and the road (better ride and won't endanger the rims as much). Does
anyone have experience or knowledge as to the recommended offset (front
and rear) and largest tire size that will fit both front and rear? I've
also put in a 406 SBC and a T-5 transmission from a Z-28, shortened
drive shaft and 3:36 Stock rear (for now). Any suggestions, comments, or
questions would be appreciated. Thanks
Harry

Bob,

The crash was actually outside of Cannelton Indiana which lies adjacent to
Tell City. At the time Tell City was and still is the larger of the two
towns, so most news media related the event as being in Tell City. I was
around 7 or 8
years old when it happened. We went to the area after everything was done
but it still gave
you an eerie feeling. There is a memorial erected at the crash site. It's
physical location is Millstone Indiana, which is just an area, not really a
town. It's actually in the remote area on a small county blacktop road. Not
very heavily traveled.

There's been problems in the last few years over maintaining the memorial.
You know as people die off, that were directly involved and pursued
diligently the memorial, the new comers to the powers that be don't have
the
emotional connection. I visited the site a couple of years ago and the
walkways and grass maintenance was degrading.

The people that lived in a house not 200 feet from the impact signed the
land over to the memorial committee. They stated that if it wasn't taken
care of or left the memorial committee's hands then it reverted back to
them. I believe the original land owner's kinfolk have been doing the
maintenance for several years at their own expense.

It's a shame to stop and read through the names on the memorial, knowing
that most if not all the peoples' relatives never visit it. I've only seen
one or two flowers years ago placed there on Memorial Day.

The local paper in Tell City ran a two page story on the complete crash and
the area PB TV station aired information from it on the anniversary date. I
believe GE was found negligent after a lengthy investigation. The turbine
blades in the jet engines were manufactured with minute cracks or flaws.
They supposedly new about it but decided it wasn't a danger.

I don't believe any Lockheed Electras ever flew after that crash.

Glenn

Editor's note. In my youth I read every thing I could about planes. The
information below may be
known but I think it bears repeating.

The Northwest Airlines Electra that crashed near Tell City on March 17,
1960 killed 63 people,
everyone on board. The Lockheed Electra has the distinction, as far as I
know, as the only
commercial plane to loose a wing in flight without hitting another plane.

The people that are supposed to insure that planes are safe did not ground
the Electra when they
found out the wing came off. They just said the Electra could not fly
faster than 200 MPH. The
primary reason for the was that 1 airline, PSA, only had Electras in their
fleet and grounding the
Electras would have put them out of business. Once again the FAA put
airline profit over fliers
safety.

The Electra had a very simple fatal flaw. The prop causes vibration when
it is not balanced.
Since the Electra was a new type plane (where a jet engine turns a prop),
the prop turned much
faster than older planes. As speed increases on a prop, it vibrates more.
Any metal that received
vibration constantly will eventually break and that is exactly what
happened to the Electra's wing.

Lockheed fixed the problem with the cracking wings by making the connection
of the wings to the
motor less rigid like we do on motor mounts in a car. This fix completely
solved the problem. It
is just sad that 63 people had to die before they discovered the problem.
There are over 200
Electra's still flying today. A few are in commercial airline service but
the majority are used by
the Navy to keep track of subs and scan the ocean for ships of foreign
nations.

Oddly this 40 year old plane is one of the most reliable planes ever built.
It just had a fatal flaw
that was not detected until one crashed.
