With respect to the question you received from someone on converting a
'55-'57
Chevy from a 6 to and 8:

I've done this (presuming that you are speaking about going to a 265/283
small
block), but last time was about 35 years ago! Man, does time fly!

Anyway, it was not much of a problem. The bell-housing mounts to the frame
are
the same for both engines, of course. The front engine mounts are in a
slightly
different position, but the correct mounting holes for the eight are
already in
the frame. The six cylinder radiator mounts ahead of the radiator upper tie
bar,
while the radiator on the eight is mounted behind it. I changed radiators,
and
positioned it properly (closer to the fan). I'd not recommend doing
otherwise,
as I'd think one would invite cooling problems in traffic where the fan is
most
needed. The fuel pump line, accelerator linkage, ignition and generator
wiring
required some minor re-working - but nothing that presented any problems.
I'd
recommend taking as much eight-cylinder linkage, wiring, etc. from a
"donor"
vehicle as possible - to use for patterns, if nothing else. The exhaust
obviously has to be changed too, but everything is straight-forward as I
recall.

Please keep in mind that I was re-powering my everyday transportation - and
not
trying to impress judges at some car show! While there may be some slight
differences in original coil spring rates, I didn't change anything - and
had no
problems. Since the 6 is actually the heavier engine anyway, the main
effect I'd
expect would be a slightly higher front end height.

Hope this is of some help.

Hi Bob,

Several people have posted information about a modern filter replacement
for the original oil bath element on 55-56 4 barrel air cleaners.

I have finally tracked down the correct part number from K&N, it is
E3650. This is the reusable, cleanable filter system that K&N is
famous for.

The dimensions of the filter element are: 5" high, 9" OD and 7 1/2" ID.
Hope this helps. Keep up the great work with this List, Bob.

Bob,
I really enjoy this site, keep up the good work. I was wondering if
any one could give me an idea of a great combination on building a early
model 283 engine using a mixture of 327 parts. I am not wanting a race car
with high
lift cam or anything, I have had that before, I would like to have a strong
running motor with just a very mild cam. If anyone could give me any ideas
on camspecs and piston size, intake, carb, and be able to run an turbo 350
or 400, I
would really appreciate the info. I have a 67 283 with only 75000 miles on
untouched motor it has a broke ring and smokes but I think I have a good
one to build for my 1955 chevy.

Thanks Alot

Bob - Rick Federlghi says he has been reading the list for about a year
and sees "never or very few responses to tech questions". That same
issue had 5 answers on the K&N filter, 6 responses on checks, a response
on axles and a response on powerglide rebuilding, among other things. I
think list members do a pretty good job of helping out other members who
have questions. Your answer to him was a diplomatic coup.

Ken, I've been told many times that running anti-freeze with your coolant
will greatly increase the boiling point, so how do you come by the fact
that
running straight water is better for hot weather driving & idling???? A
few
years back, I drove my 56 across the Mojave Desert in mid July at 110
degree
temps & when I got to Needles it was 114 !!!!! My temp guage was nearly
all
the way up to the H, but I did Not boil over!!!! I am sure that if I were
running water only, I would have never made it to Needles! I always run
50/50 anti-freeze/water! (year-around)

Hi everybody- I know this is a bit tangential to the
main topic here, but... does anyone know of a company
that prints checks with a 55/6/7 chevy background?
Or even classic 50's cars would be good enough....
