I was reading an article about a 55 Nomad and the writer mentioned that
his/her 55 Nomad tailgate did not have a "knuckle buster." The question
that
I have is what's a "knuckle buster" and aren't all 55-56-57 tailgates the
same. If they are not what's the difference? Thanks for your response.

Hi Bob
I haven't written in a long time so I'd just like to say how much I look
forward to this list. I have learned so much about that old 57 Chevy of
mine from the great people on this list. Bob I have run into a little
problem and I need some advice from you guys.
I haven't had my car out in a couple of years. I'm single and I have had
other things on my mind if you know what I mean. Any way I thought I would
get it out this summer and when I try to drive it wants to over heat. I
took the radiator to the radiator shop and the guy told me that it was
stopped up and he couldn't rod it out because it is an original radiator
and it is honey combed. What I need to know is if there isn't any thing I
can do and I need a new radiator where is the best place to get one and
should I get another one that is honey combed or can I get one with
straight
tubes in it that will fit in my car.
Sorry I took up so much space.

In response to the question "I have an aftermarket 134a AC unit on my chevy
and recently had to have the system recharged. The AC fellow told me that
I
would need to run my car every few days for 10-15 minutes to keep the
system
from leaking." There is validity to this. I won't speak to the time frame
as many people will have different ideas. I just try to do it monthly. It
is important to run the AC regularly for a while even during the winter
months to keep the seals lubricated. These cars which may not get driven
regularly and don't have their AC run, may over time develop leaks in the
seals which will require recharging the AC system or worse. This is not to
say that the systems will leak because many times there won't be a problem,
or the cooling effect will taper off gradually so the user won't remember
just how cool the AC once blew.

Thanks,

Dave

This is in response to a reader who wanted comments on '56 Chevy wire wheel
hubcaps.

Although the look of these wheels can be quite striking and desirable there
are some problems. First, as noted before, they are QUITE EXPENSIVE. You
need to have the 4 wire components, the 4 dog dish hub caps, and the
mounting clips. Then, you should have 4 chrome rings affixed to the stock
'56 wheels (hub caps could pop off without the stock type). $1,000 sounds
like a fair estimate to me.

Secondly, you have the maintenance issue. Cleaning all these components at
a car show can be very laborious and time-consuming, especially the wires
and dog dishes. To get the best result, you practically have to dismantle
the components for the cleanest wheels.

Finally, there's the matter of how the clips and stock wheels react to
radial tires. I've heard one owner say that he kept getting flat tires
because the flexing of his tires along with the mounting of the clips seem
to have put undue stress on tire beads. He finally gave up and went to
modern polished wheels, without the wires. I think they are American
Racing, Torque Thrust II, or some such.

Maybe one solution to the last problem is to get away from the stock '56
rims and go to sturdy, polished ones that will accept the dog dish caps and
other components. Other people out there might know better than me.

The original look of the '56 wire rims is great, but if you don't have a
trailer queen with bias-belted tires, you maybe should try something else.

Hi Bob & All. Need your help. I have replaced the
drivers window and frame on my '55 hardtop and
it is way out of adjustment. When you run the
window up, it goes to the to the top at the front, but
is down about 1"-1 1/2" at the back. Problem- I can't
figure out how to adjust it so that it is nice and straight
when in the full up position. HELP !!

I have heard this before. That if you don't run AC's for a while that
grommets, etc, etc., etc. will dry out or something to that order. Yes, I
have been told that you should run your A/C at least once a week for about
10
min.! Richard

Harry,
We have full steel 2" dropped spindles. These are much stronger than
cast iron. They use your stock steering arms, with no loss of turning
radius. They come with caliper brackets. Cost is $289-$299pr, depending
on type of caliper bracket choice. We also have complete disc brake kits
for dropped spindles. All needed at the wheel and all at the firewall.
Give us a call to discuss all the possibilities. Thank you, Donna

In regard to the antifreeze discussion: Ken and Richard are apparently
both
correct. I decided to use some of that education for which Mom and Dad
paid
so dearly and looked up a few things. According to the books, water should
transfer heat at about twice the rate of antifreeze (ethylene glycol). So
water cools better than antifreeze. However, there are a few complicating
factors. Increased pressure will increase the boiling point of any liquid.
The opposite is also true, which is why it's easier to boil water in Denver

than in Death Valley. The radiator cap helps increase the pressure in the
cooling system. An 8 psi (which is a little over ½ an atmosphere) cap will
increase the boiling point to around 235ºF. A 15 psi (1 atmosphere) cap
will raise the boiling point to around 250ºF. The boiling point of
antifreeze is around 287ºF at normal atmospheric pressure. Adding the
antifreeze to the water increases the boiling point (and decreases the
freezing point). How far those points are changed depends on how much
antifreeze is in the water. So, you have to choose a happy medium between
higher heat transfer (better cooling) and boiling point (decreased chance
of
boiling over). After all is considered, 100% water will cool better as
long
as the temperature of the water in the cooling system stays below the
boiling point. If I'm going to be driving in very hot conditions or in
stop
and go traffic, I'd prefer to have the boiling point a little higher. We
all know that radiators don't work well if there's not air moving through
it
and we've all seen what happens when the radiator boils over.
