I have a 57 2 door hardtop. all original, restored in 1990. Has 2500 miles
since restoration. I drive it very little and after each run the Powerglide
(completely rebuilt 1990) leaks oil on the shop floor. I refill...usually a
quart or two and things seam fine. Are the seals just dry...or does the
trans need rebuilt. It seams to operate great....unless it is low on oil.

I have a question concerning the original rear end gear ratios and
housings.
Presently, I have 3.73 gears in the stock axle. The car is originally a 6
cylinder with a 3 speed manual trans. I am switching over to a stock
original 3 speed overdrive, and therefore I would need a 4.11 rear end.
Can
I install 4.11 gears in a 3.73 housing or will I need a housing for a 4.11?

hi...quick question, i know you must get a lot of these...

i'm a teenager, and for obvious reasons don't have that much money. i have
around 10K but i'm not going to drop it all right off the bat. say i have
like 6K to use right now. i don't know much about cars, but i love the look

of the 56, 57 chevy pickup. in a local used car magazine, i saw a 57 pickup

with all new parts for restoration included. i think it probably runs right

now, but it doesn't say for certain. half the reason i want to buy this car

is for the fun of fixing it up. do you think $6000 is a decent price for a
running 57 chevy pickup with all new parts for restoration included? what
about the other one in the magazine, a 56 chevy pickup that they say "runs
and drives" for $4000? either one a good deal? thanks, sorry i took so long

to say what i was trying to say. if it matters, the 57 pickup was kept down

south...i know people say that makes them last longer.

I am located in Western Massachusetts. The reason this one appealed to me
is
because it was $6000, semi-in my price range. I'm a teen so I don't have
much to work with. Maybe a 57 Chevy just ain't for me yet, but I really
don't want that to be true.

Thanks for your help,

This is regarding Mounting Brackets for Courtesy Lights. We discovered
recently that we needed a pair for our '56 Chevy convertible.

After searching all over the country by phone and e-mail, I discovered that
Duane's Classic Chevys in Miamisburg, Ohio had the brackets for $5, apiece.
They're "pre-owned" and will require clean-up and painting, but that's no
problem.

I don't know if he'll have any left, but if you need some, you can call
Duane 1-800-900-5912. He has lots of other things for our classic Chevys,
too, and offers a free catalog.

If you need the whole kit, with wiring harness, sockets, brackets, etc.
there are several possible sources. You can expect to pay $24-$27 (plus
shipping) for the kit. In addition to Duane, here are some other places to
consider:

1) Fifties Forever in New Jersey, 1-973-478-1306
2) Double Nickel in Georgia, 1-706-548-6194
3) Cliff's Classic Chevy in Oregon, 1-503-667-4329
4) Bel Air Classics in Tennessee, 1-888-556-1957
5) Bow Tie Chevys in Florida, 1-800-683-1961

Good luck.

I have a '57 Chevy Belair 4-dr. sedan with p.s. and p.b. 283 4bbl and duel
exhaust. What I need is the RAM unit for my power steering unit. My
mechanic, a local pro and I have been looking for weeks for a RAM and can't
find one, we've checked the 5 catalogs I have and done a lot of web surfing
and auto salvage lots with no luck. Hopefully one of "US" out there will
be
able to tell me where I can get one of these units. I need it bad as my
Chevy is our second car and a daily driver. I bought it from the original
owners daughter & son-in-law and they kept it up and original, a real nice
car but like all older cars it needs a little help here and there with an
older restoration. The only modification I will do to it (once I get the
RAM & the power steering fixed) is to put a 45 R.P.M. record player in it -
do any of you out there remember these? I have one (it's in the shop too
being worked on (need a needle cartridge to complete the work & can't find
that item either) - but just wait, once both are fixed, I'll be crusin just
like I did in the early sixties with all my old favorite 45's being played
as I cruise!
Help please on that p.s. RAM unit. I can be reached via e-mail @
bricklef@earthlink.net or by phone at (760) 365-7275.

Editor's note. Try E-bay for parts for your record player. I think I
drove through Yucca Valley on
my way to Twentynine Palms last year. However at my age, memory and
something else are the first things you loose and I can not remember what
the other thing was.

it goes in. There is a rectangular hole in the rear with a piece of flat

haven't found what size tires and rims will fit on the rear of my 55, any

with any ideas, thanx tony

Editor's note. On the clock for my 57, I used WD40 to clean all of the
old sticky oil out. Then I used an air hose to get all of WD40 and junk
out. I found something called clock oil at a hardware store and put that
on the gears. It has been running OK for 2 years.

Bob,
Here's one for you and the members of the list. The speedometer
needle in my 56 BelAir bounces around constantly whenever the car is
moving. I was told that a kink or a fray in the cable could cause this.
However, the odometer seems to rotate very smoothly. I was also told
that an inconsistency in the odometer rotating wouldn't be noticed due
to a gearing reduction in the speedometer. I installed a new entire
speedometer (cable & housing) and there is no change. Is there a problem
with the needle as far as how it is actuated? Is the problem in the
speedometer assembly? Does anyone have an idea what is wrong? Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Skip Metz
Succasunna, NJ

Editor's note. Did you grease the new cable before you put it in the
housing? Are their any sharp
bends in the housing? Check the driven gear in the tranny. Are all of
the teeth on the gear in good shape? You might try to connect a variable
speed drill to the speedometer. Run the drill at a constant slow speed and
observe the needle. Does it hold steady?

Hi Bob,

I have a four door HT 1957. My rear view mirror is mounted on the ceiling
just like all of the other cars. But I believe that early 57 cars had it
mounted on the dash. This makes sense to me since my mirror does not show
very much of the road behind me. The mirror I have is the day-night type.
Here is my question:

Does anyone have or know where I can get these dash mounted mirrors? Or,
does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get my mirror to show more of
the road behind?

In the book "CHEVROLET, THE HOT ONES, 55,56,57, by Anthony Young, it is
said that Zora Arkus-duntov had a 283 pull 289hp at 6200 rpm on the dyno

out there that can tell me the profile of this beast????????????? Man if I

Hello Mr. Ford,

I got your name and email address from David Scott Coker. I am desperately
searching for mint to excellent 1955 California license plates that are
clear to DMV register. My boss just bought a mint all original 1955 Porche
Roadster and would like to have authentic plates to match. His 50th
birthday is fastly approaching and I thought this would make a great gift
for him. He's had trouble finding them on his own so I thought I would try
to beat him to the punch. But I am finding that these plates are extra
hard
to find in excellent condition and DMV clear since they are currently
recycling the 1951-1955 numbers. David mentioned that you are a 1955, 56,
& 57 Chevy enthusiast and thought you might be able to help. I've heard
from him as well as a few others that these plates would run somewhere in
the $200 - $350 range. I'd be willing to pay that if they were indeed mint
- excellent condition and DMV clear. David also mentioned that you go to
Pomona on a regular basis for a car exhibition. Is this a place where I
might have some luck? (I live in Newport Beach, CA) Mr. Ford, any
information that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Cherylon Vinyard

Editor's note. Go the the swap meet in Long Beach on July 9th. You will
find a lot of California plates there. If you do not have any luck at Long
Beach, go to the Pomona swap meet on July 16th. There are always several
plate vendors at that swap meet.

My '55's don't have Air Cond but for a daily driver, I just purchased a
'67 Olds 98 with 41,500 original miles that has air. The original
owner's manual, owner protection plan with protect-o-plate, and an "all
weather climate control" tag were included. The climate control tag
says, "When air conditioning is not being used regularly, operate the
system once every two weeks or at least once a month as follows: 1.
With engine running, move cold control lever to extreme cool position
and depress recir. button. 2. Operate for 5 minutes. Turn system
off."

This "luxury" car is quite a boat. Two feet, four inches longer, six
inches wider, and twelve hundred pounds heavier than my '55 conv.

Reference: Changing to 134A in your air conditioner.
It is really no big deal. Now the shops say it is and are over charging

the

and
refill with 134A

Hello out there,
I have aa few questions:
1st, My beautiful new snow-leopard carpet has been stained with anti-freeze
from a leaky heater core, anyone know the best product to clean this up?
Underneath is a jute pad with the aluminium sheeting on one side.

2nd, I understand if you mount a spark-plug,with an on/off switch near the
end of your exhaust pipe, you can get flames out the rear, my question is,
at what distance should they be from the end?

3rd, is there any inexpensive way to boost regular gas octaine? Here in San
Diego they are gouging us at the pump and these fill-ups with super are
killing me! Do moth-balls really work, and if so, what's the formula?
These questions may be out of the normal realm for many of you, but there
must be some other nuts out there... I appreciate your help!

Editor's note. Most auto parts stores sell octane booster. As I recall it
was about $2 to $4 per can. I think it treats one tank of gas. Check the
price and see if that is cheaper than buying the higher octane gas.

Fellow list members

I completely agree with Kirman that if CCI and Bow Tie placed a high
priority on service to their
members they would have mentioned Bob's list in their magazines. The fact
that they have not
says a lot about these organizations. You would think that they would
realize it is in their own
best interest to support something that helps people communicate about
their TriFives and this
support would cost them nothing.

I belong to both CCI and Bow Tie as I am sure most members of this list do.
Come on CCI and
Bow Tie, give us some support. At the very least, you should interview Bob
about putting this
list together. Anyone that gives that amount of effort to our hobby should
be recognized for their
efforts. The information Bob provided us about the development of the 1955
Chevy was
priceless.

I go to many cars shows and talk to many owners at these shows. I have
never found any owners
of other makes that belongs to a list like this one. They all want
someone to do a list for their
make just like it. The problem for them is that no one wants to spend the
time and money it takes
to start and maintain such a list.
