Good morning Bob,

Could you please place this on your list.

How hard is it to pick up a 1957 Turboglide gear box??? And how hard is it
to get rebuilt. I know over here in Australia, there would be probably two
people per State that would even know what one of these gems were. I never
see any adds even in the US magazines for these gearboxes.
Also is there any indication on body tags or VIN numbers if your car had
rolled off the production line with a Turboglide gearbox???
Many thanks Bob,
Keep up the great job,
PETER HALL.

Editor's note. It is almost impossible to find a 57 Turboglide tranny. I
don't think there is any way
to check a VIN to tell if the car came with a Turboglide. If you have the
original motor, you can tell by looking at the rear of the crankshaft. The
ones that had a Turboglide had the hole in the rear of the crankshaft that
is 1 inch deep. All other crankshafts has a hole in the rear about 1/2
inch deep.
Also the starter on Turboglide cars was attached to the block with 3
bolts.

It is a fairly simple procedure to use a later model Turboglide on a 57.
The later models were much more trouble free. If you have a 57 Turboglide
and a later model Turboglide, take the rear shaft ( the one with the
speedometer gear) off of the later model and put on the one from the 57.
Drill and tap 2 mounting holes in the transmission case so the transmission
can be attached to the rear motor mounts. The later model Turboglide will
bolt right up to the engine.

Send me a private e-mail if you need more information. I will try to help
you.

I agree hole-heartedly with Don Szerencits and his comments on this "club".
I have been a member for many many years and can tell you for sure that
when they sold this club off several years ago it became another capitalist
venture to suck every penny they could from people.

It's a shame that young people today trying to get into a hobby that is so
rewarding has to depend on this club for anything. The "ART" of restoring a
vintage tri-five doesn't mean buying $25,000 in new parts and bolting them
together. I expect anyone could do that!

I only used new parts from CCI when I couldn't repair/restore my existing
ones. In some cases I found better deals and better quality (re-chrome,
stainless polishing) elsewhere. They actually lost my original hoodbar and
replaced it with a repro. I have a '57 that I spent 17 years meticulously
restoring from top to bottom. Everything that could be restored and or
repaired was and not replaced. I have been a CCI member almost twenty years
but have decided not to renew my membership.

I think they need to go back and read the early goals, "Preservation and
Restoration of all series and models of '55- '56- '57 Chevrolets including
Corvettes and Trucks." (taken from inside cover of April 1981 Classic Chevy
World magazine).

BOB: I believe that CCI and Bow Ties are afraid of your list. Believe
me, I have considered cancelling my memberships to both and putting
$70.00 per year into my car instead. I get all I need from your list.
I've been a member of CCi since 1979 and BowTies since the beginning.
Harold Louisiana had a nice club magazine called Golden Shop news in the
early 90's and I belonged to that too. Too bad he couldn't make a go of
it (he wrote the 57 how to book). Anyway, I belong because it is a
habit and like to get all the Tri 5 stuff I can. Hopefully our members
here will continue to post their own useful tips and how to's, picking
up where the clubs leave off. MANY thanks to you BOB.

Concerning the 57 inside rear view mirrors... I believe there were 3
different mounting brackets at one time. First, there is the dash mounted
unit that Mr. Esposito is looking for. Two, there is the ceiling mount
that
was exclusive to the for door hardtop. This bracket hung down a little
lower
than the third type, which was used on everything else. The 4dr hardtop is

the only body style that had its own ISRV mirror bracket. I know this
because I have read it somewhere and I have observed many cars at shows and

in salvage yards. I found a ceiling-mounted 4dr hardtop bracket in a
salvage
yard that has some pits and would require rechroming for show.

CCI.
!!!!!! If there was another club with STRICTLY 5-6-&7's, I would
certainly
join them & CCI would be in my history book!!!!!! I don't think they are
too happy about Late Great Chevys (especially since they are right down the

street from them), so they are heavily competing with them, so that they
don't lose out, but they ARE losing out, as I know Several members who just

let their membership expire & did not renew because of their involvement in

later year Chevies! They TRIED to convince us members that this addition
was
necessary, but us members KNOW BETTER!!!! You notice in older issues of
CCW,
that they used to print the membership??? And NOW they NEVER print it
!!!!!!! I too, am tired of seeing Camaros & Monte Carlos in what is

Bob,

Well I guess I owe all of the members along this list a great big apology
and
explanation.

Over a year ago I started collecting personal statements from people
regarding anecdotal stories of things that happened along this list. I was

wanting to write a tribute piece about Bob and this list for Classic Chevy
International's bi-monthly magazine. Well, upon inquiry, I found out they
do
not pay anything for publication - something I am sick and tired of in the
publishing industry.

Soon after this, a big controversy regarding CCI broke out on this list,
with
about half of the respondents posting very disparaging remarks about the
organization, the prices they charge for parts and how the group has grown
too big to actually care anything about some of us out here who cannot
afford
the premium prices they charge for parts.

Out of deference to these people -- and, because I got involved in other
"paying" projects, I never wrote the article for the publication.

I realize this is a pretty lousy explanation but it is the truth. I did
not
pay my dues for the group this year so I no longer get the magazine. Out of

sight out of mind, so they say.

Since I did collect the statements of several list members for this project

that was never completed, I owe a bunch of people an apology.

Hi, Bob, and greetings from Nashville, TN----Music City, USA!

Hope you and the other Tri-Five List readers had a great 4th of July. Lots
of
swap meets and shows coming up over the next few months. I look forward to
taking several in. In the meantime, I am re-launching my efforts to FINALLY

get a '55 to '57 Chevy (regardless of model, but prefer 2DH).

I've mentioned my '48 Buick Sedannette in several previous posts, but I
need
to sell or trade it in order to move "UP" to a Classic Chevy. If ANYONE out

there wants a great example of a Buick Bombsight 'classic' I'm ready to
"wheel and deal." Similar Buicks go for $14,000 to $19,000.00 in Hemmings,
but this is a California 'black plate' car, in excellent condition. A real
'driver' which would be an ideal candidate to keep stock or 'rod.' Is white

in color, has www, radio, heater, search light, on gray tweed cloth
interior.
Cantilever hood, chrome and glass all great. A 'trophy' winning car.

I would like to use the Buick as partial trade on an outstanding '55 to
'57.
No project cars, please. I would consider cars valued in the $22k to $27k
range, with an all cash difference of $10,000.00, give or take.

Otherwise, anyone who knows of someone who is looking for a great '48
Buick,
pass my name and number along and I will return the favor.

As a special "BONUS" to the person who trades for, or buys my Buick, I will

give them a rare 'vintage' '64/'65 Beach Boys poster (this is NOT a
reproduction, this is the 'real deal'). This poster is listed in Rock
memorabilia books/guides for $2,500.00!! A great addition to your den,
music
room or office!

Thanks to Bob for his outstanding weekly contributions to our 'fav' cars:
the
'55 to '57 Chevys! Keep up the great work!

Bob:

I really enjoy your list. I look forward to reading every posting.

I have a 56 Bel Air that I'm in the process of completing a frame-off
restoration. In the interim until it is complete (which could be a long
time), I purchased a 1964 Chevy pickup for fun. This pickup has a 350 crate
engine with a 4-barrel Holly. My questions to your list readers are the
following:

1) What is the correct operating temperature of this engine? I'm
currently running between 190 and 200 degrees when in motion. When I stop
the engine temperature increases to between 210 and 215.

2) When purchasing parts for the engine at the local auto parts
store,
what year do I tell the clerk or doesn't it matter. Remember this is a
crate
engine.

Thanks for any help that you can provide and keep up the good work.

Hi Bob,

I have a four door HT 1957. My rear view mirror is mounted on the ceiling
just like all of the other cars. But I believe that early 57 cars had it
mounted on the dash. This makes sense to me since my mirror does not
show very much of the road behind me. The mirror I have is the day-night
type.
Here is my question:
...

Dear Anthony,

The 4 door hardtops require the station wagon mirror bracket which is a
little longer than the normal bracket. The reproduction brackets are
all the shorter ones. You'll need to get a used station wagon one.

Hope this helps,

Has anyone else had problems lately dealing with Classic Chevy
International?
It has been 3 months since I have seen their "monthly" magazine.
I have emailed a couple questions and never got a response.

At my last renewal I was promised one of those little die cast classics
and that was 6 months ago. (Wife says they are great dust collectors)

I know CCI bought out the Camero organization, maybe they have their hands
too full now.

Inquiring minds want to know.

It is comforting to know that Bob Ford is ever vigil and relaying the info
as fast as he gets it.

Hey Bob, I am still waiting to hear the progress on your 57 wagon!!

This is f
or Paul who was asking about the spark plugs in the tail pipes. I once
played around with this and after talking to an old '50's gear head was
successful in blowing flames about 4 feet out of the tail pipes of my '48
Willys
Jeep with a 283 Chevy in it. The spark plugs were installed only about 6
inches
from the end of the pipes. The secret to getting the flames is how you
drive
the car. First, the car has to have a manual transmission, an automatic
will not
work. Get cruising down your favorite strip about 35 miles per hour. Push
in
the clutch and turn the ignition off (only do this in a old car that the
steering wheel does not lock when you turn the key off.) Next pump the gas
pedal to pump a lot of gas into the motor. The next two steps are done at
approximately the same time. Turn on the switch hooked up to the spark
plugs in
the tail pipes. I just stuck a wire under the spark plug wire on #1 on the
distributor cap. Release the clutch so the motor turns over and pumps the
raw
gas down the exhaust, turn on the ignition. Note: This is pretty hard on
the
engine because running all the raw gas through the engine washes the oil
off the
cylinder walls, when you let out the clutch the motor turns over pretty
much
with out any lubrication in the cylinders.
