BOB

Besides being a lover of old cars, I am a professor of journalism at of a
large university.
Concerning the recent discussion of CCI, you did exactly the right thing.
You let people have
their say and invited CCI to reply. That is exactly what I tell my
students to do. There are two
sides to every story and I tell them to get and present both sides. I also
tell them to not put their
personal feeling in a story. I can see that you want to be fair to
everyone and have not put your
personal feelings about this situation out on the list. You are to be
commended for this. Also it says a
lot about your character that you will publish letters that attack you.
You could have easily hit the delete button and they would be history. In
the journalism business it called attacking the messenger.

What follows is my personal opinion.

A club can not compete with anyone. A club is designed for the mutual
benefit of it's members.
Each member of a club helps other members. They do not do it to make a
profit. In fact, most
club members loose money if you count the time they spend helping other
members. A club is not
a business and a business is not a club. However, good business people
know that goodwill is a
very valuable asset. Why do you think businesses give to charity and
donate to PBS? It creates
goodwill for their company. Wouldn't you rather give your business to a
company that helps the
community rather than one that does not?

I would like to thank all of the list members who responded to my question
about my mirror on my 57 4dr HT. After reading them I learned that there
were two different sizes of mirror support for 57 cars. I went out to the
garage and looked in my boxes of extra parts( we all have those boxes
sitting around, don't we ). Well what do think I found? Another mirror
support and it was the longer one that I needed for my car. I switched the
two supports and the problem is solved. All because some of you were kind
enough to help someone in need. This is the best part of the
hobby.....people helping people just for the fun of it. Bob, keep up your
good work. Many thanks to you and all of the helpful Chevy guys out there.

Regarding the email from Danny Shell. I recently received this email and
visited his web site. Now it may be an oversight but nowhere on the site
could I find a picture or description of the 55 Chevy Abel-Air that they
are raffling off. Although I am sure this fund raiser is for good causes,
it automatically raised a red flag with me. Just my opinion.

Hi Bob I have purchased parts from Frank Botte and have had no
problem with the quality or service. In fact I was surprised that the first
time a made a purchase from him, he told me to send him
payment when I received the part and was satisfied.

Good morning Bob,

The licence plates that I was originally after were a set from California.
My Coupe was bought from LA but it was built in Kansas. But it doesn't
bother me really, I would just be extremely happy with any set of 1957
plates.
Many, Many thanks Bob,
PETER HALL.

Editor's note. I plan to go to the Pomona swap meet next Sunday. I will
see what
I can find. For 1957 California plates, you need a 56 plate and a 57
sticker.

Hi, Wolf here, I am in need of the back seat brackets for a 57 Chevy
convertible that look like a "u" . They are welded to the bottom of the
seat and push into the floor pan opening. I could also use some direction
in
repairing the main electric window controls or if there is a diagram
showing the breakdown. As always thanks and keep up the good work.

Bob,

I just sent this letter to Joe Whitaker at Lenny's suggestion. I think we
all need to start turning up the heat on these people. They would not
listen
to me before -- perhaps now we have gotten their attention.

I would urge all of you who are regular participants on this list to write
similar letters. There is strength in numbers and there is nothing more
important to any organization that their public image -- particularly when
it
is seriously tarnished.

Warmest regards to all -- especially you Bob!

David

Dear Mr. Whitaker,

I hope whoever monitors the Bob Ford list within your company has gotten an

earful from the current and past CCI members on this list who firmly
believe
that you all have lost touch with the rank-and-file enthusiasts who restore

and own these cars all across the country.

I am the person who contacted CCI about two years ago about writing an
article about Bob Ford and the marvelous job he is doing for 1955, '56 and
'57 Chevy enthusiasts all across the country. Since I did not receive any
warm and fuzzies from your editorial staff, had a hard time obtaining
pictures to illustrate the proposed article and the fact that you do not
pay
anything for free lance material published in your magazine, I dropped the
idea as any sane individual would.

But my reason for writing you is not so much about Bob and the members
along
this list -- it is about your company. The prices you charge for parts are

simply too high. You have never sponsored any type of sanctioned event or
participated in any of the classic car shows within 150 miles of where I
live. I see where your people have been to Indianapolis before but driving

up there from here is an all day task and a grueling trip on the roads in
southwestern Indiana.

What these people have been saying is the truth -- CCI has some serious
public relations problems and the organization had better start paying
attention to what they are saying. It is for these reasons that I did not
renew my membership in the group. I really wish you would quit sending me
these little invoices in the mail for subscription dues that I have no
intention of paying until I see some major changes in the way the company
handles itself.

I would offer to help you out in that regard having had some experience in
public relations in the past -- but I doubt that anyone down there would
take
me seriously now having written this letter.

Here is a link to my personal web site. You will see a picture of my
little
Cuban taxicab prominently displayed, along with a resume and links to
several
articles I have had published in the local newspapers.

If you are truly concerned about the public image of your organization, I
would suggest you start listening to both me and the over 1,600 subscribers

to Bob's list all over the world who seem seriously discontented with what
you are doing.

Sincerely,

David Scott Coker

I've been following Bob's list for several months now. Needless to say, it
is
a great way to promote our hobby. I would like to voice my opinion about
CCI
and how many on Bob's list view this organization. (I don't know much about
Bow Tie Chevy
so are not included). It seems that there is alot of CCI bashing going
on--of
course we are all entitled to our opinions. I intend to be very objective
here--I'll tell you of my experiences with CCI.

First of all, I joined CCI in 1993 when I got my second 57 after 24
years. I found the magazine invaluable in locating parts, tech help. etc.I
got a second 57 in 1996 and just completed my second restoration. The first

was a ground up and the second a complete frame off. I always found the
guys
at CCI to be very knowledable and helpful, esp. Wyatt in the used parts
dept,
as they always had those hard to find parts. Granted, their pricers are not

cheap but remember, they are a BUSINESS not a CLUB. They have just as much
of a right to make money in our market economy as the guys who set up
tables at the
numerous Swap Meets. Has anyone who has been bashing CCI lately said
anything of the FREE ADS that members can publish? They do allow for
competition in the marketplace- you don't have to buy from them.
Furthermore, they do offer specials on items such as interiors and exhaust
systems.

When a part didn't fit on my exhaust they got me in touch directly
with the manufacturer-Schafer Classic Repros.and they sent me what I need
in
less than 4 days. In closing, I believe that it really isn't fair to
classify
CCI as many have. A couple of years ago a friend moved to FL. and I went to

visit and attended the Winter Nationals in Orlando. It was a great show and

all around were vendors from all over the country. I met most of the CCI
guys
and I can tell you first hand that know their stuff and are always
courteous
and helpful. It would be awkward for them to give a rebuttal on Bob's list

==I just don't think that it is fair to put them in such a bad light, esp.
when some on-liners don't know them!

Bob - If you had a parts company that was specialized for 55-56-57
Chevys and you were so confident you charged $30-35.00 a year just to
belong to it, plus charging for a catalog, and someone else started a
company similar to it, would you advertise their existence in your
catalog? Of course not. Neither would Classic Chevy Club
promote Bob_Fords Chevy List because there would be no need to join
their club if the same info was available just for turning on your
internet device. They are not about to mention Bow Tie Classics because
that is a collection of former employees of CCCI who saw the gold mine
and started their own club (and have also had personnel departures and
changes). CCCI was started by Doug Morehead in 1974 with an ad in Hot
Rod Magazine. After it got rolling, he had his old school friend Danny
Howell move from Michigan and help him operate it as it mushroomed. It
soon outgrew Doug's basement, went into rented space, parts were added
to the T-Shirts, hats etc and it spiraled from there. Danny ended up
with late great chevys and the national chevy-gmc truck club Seth
Doulton started with GSPP in California about the time Doug sold the
club. Bow-Tie Chevys started on this nucleus, an it is apparent that
interest in our 55-56-57's has peaked, and that is why they both have
added Chevys up to '72.
The purest club was probably the old National Nomad Club out of Denver,
Colorado. Three couples ran this thing for years totally as a
non-profit group and, I think, finally achieved "burn-out" and shut it
down.
As a personal note, I spent the 70's and 80's attending NNC and CCCI
conventions all over the west, and even was involved with doing the Park
City, Utah convention in 1987. and enjoyed it. But, as time went on, it
became apparent that the clubs had become all business, and I finally
achieved the burn-out and bailed out. Frankly, I find all the enjoyment
in the world reading this list and trying to help out some others with
their questions and problems. I still have my foot in the door with a
'55 and my '55 GMC truck. I have parts vendors available, some web
sites are given that are great, no one seems to be trying to get rich
off the other members, and I hope it keeps on going.

Bob and list members: I to am a CCI member, and reading the recent
posts, I to have been getting the same treatment from them as you have.
I've been a member for approx. 10 yrs., and still have all the CCW mags
since I started. That's the only reason I remained a member, was for
this monthly magazine. In the last 3 yrs. I've been "taken" 3 times. I
renewed a couple of years ago and in so doing they had me choose from 3
die cast cars listed on a renewal form. I received a thank you for
rejoining and a 25 yr anniversary pin. No car. 2 magazines didn't show
up, the latest time, I emailed them, they said they would mail it right
away. That was 4 or so months ago. I too believe this is my last year
as a member. As for prices, they are too high for me. Bob's list is
good as it gets for member helping member. In closing I want the long
time subscribers to check out the August 1980 Classic Chevy World
magazine. Introducing the Late Great Chevrolet Association and a line
or two saying how this is the only time this new club will be promoted
in CCW! WOW what happened? Bob, carry on! you have a great list. Bye

Unfortunately, I lost all my bookmarks - they simply were gone one day
several weeks ago - and one of those was a site for clock
repair/conversion to quartz. Seems like the price for doing that was
about $35. I believe I may have gotten the web site off the Chevy
List. I would like to find the site again. Anyone, know the URL for
this site? I also lost the site for fender skirts/wheel covers,
several local Classic Chevy Clubs, plus ones I can't even remember. I
have devised a system so that if this happens again I will have a copy,
but trying to remember all that I had is impossible.

talks about, sells, and trades the same things you do.1) their hoping you
call them for advice so they can sell you high dollar parts. B) They want
you to join their club, not BOBS; And last, what has BOB ever done for the

hi everyone,

here is an idea for those of you who will be sending a car for
restoration.

unless you know the shop very well or the owner is a relative it can be
risky dealing with some restoration shops. one idea i have is to contact
an appraiser close to where the shop is located. hemmings has some listed
and also the appraiser's national society can refer you.

as you know, an appraiser's job is to look at your car and give you a
value. but many also do much more. some of them can supervise an ongoing
restoration for you. basically they will visit the shop and make sure the
work is done properly and every part is installed, that the bill is fair,
etc.

so after you find a shop you can check with an appraiser and see if he
will do any of the above. you can arrange a weekly or monthly visit and
all fees. you can then contact the shop and mention that someone will be
coming in to check periodically. hopefully they won't get scared and start
to hem and haw. if so, then find another shop.

this service would be useful if the car is too far to be checked on or
even if it's close by but you are not familiar with mechanical work.
while some appraiser's may not do this kind of 'check work' they can
perhaps refer you to someone else they know.

of course, before buying a car spending 50 on an appraiser's services to
check the car is well worth the money and will save you a lot of
headaches.

under NO conditions whatsoever should you ever buy a car from a used
car dealer without an appraiser or mechanic checking the car.

am not an appraiser but just thought this would help someone.
