I understand most of what surface1 had to say. BUT, what has Bob done
for chevy people? I don't understand the meaning here. Clearly BOB is
providing a wonderful service to us here. He also sent out a video to
us early members at no cost. Bob may not be reproducing parts but is
clearly helping more classics get restored and on the road through his
efforts. Keep it up BOB and many thanks.
If I have misinterpreted something please clarify. Thanks for your time.

Good mornning Bob,

The difference between CCI + Bowtie to BOB FORD, is it's their job to help
you. Bob Ford members do it for the love of Tri-5s whether it's customising
or restoring. The amount of response is amazing and there is no financial
thanks to those who respond. It's the gratification that you may have been
able to help someone.

I know myself, even if I pose a question to the list members and someone
responds but cannot help me directly, I still appreciate the time taken
from that person to point me in the right direction, and I value their
opinion. I still feel that I owe them something in the near future where I
can. Without Bob Ford and his list we are trapped into buying shelf items
from the Big Firms. And the response, "If you cant follow the instructions,
dont ask me."

I have only been on the list for 10 months and already Bob Ford himself has
done SO much for me. A little known Ozzie in Australia. I have also met so
many wonderful people who have helped me in my mammoth task and trivial
questions. This is what the BIG BOYS lack. Its the lengths that you members
go to for other list members when answering there questions that makes this
list so strong.
I say lets keep Bob Ford our little secret so we can continue to look after
each other. After all its about the enjoyment of the 55-57 not the dollar!!
Many thanks,
PETER HALL.

Hi Bob and List Member's,
I need your help again, I am trying to find out what gear ratio I have
in
my rear. When I jack up the rear (left side) and turn the wheel 1 complete

turn, the drive shaft turn between 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 turns. I was told that
it
should be around 3 turns for the drive shaft per 1 turn of the wheel. The
car has a small block with a TH400,
Thanks for any info
Mike I

Editor's note. Mike, jack up the rear end. Make a chalk mark on your tire
at the bottom.
Turn the drive shaft and count the turns until the chalk mark is back to
where it started. That
will give you the rear end gear ratio.

Hay Y'All,
Another neat thing I found, if yer clock's busted and it's low on your
priority list, it makes a really cool picture frame for a shot of your
girl, kids or your favorite pet. Just take it apart and carefully cut the
picture, reassemble and viola, your have the start of your own gallery!
These cars are full of suprises!!
Paul

Editor's note. If you change girl friends, you can change the picture.
Great idea Paul.

Hay Y'All,
I beefed up my suspension and really do enjoy driving my chevy soooo much
more! First I got some heavy duty sway bars from JC Whitney, best price and
rugged, easy to install. Get some polyurethane end bushings from your local
parts store, they make an incredible difference in performance. I called
Moog Enginieering, they have an 800 #, a 65 Impala front spring gave the
same height but more firmness. I cleaned up the rear springs, added another
leaf and sandwiched teflon strips inbetwix for a smooth stiffness, my
girlfriend likes this... KYB shocks were the last touch. I can burn around
corners, the car stays flat as I smoke suspender-clad yuppies in their
little BMW's, life is sweet....

Hi Bob-
Info on the plates that said PENNA....it's probably Pennsylvania. That's
the old version before it was shortened to PA.
I moved to Philly in 1960 when in Junior High. I can smell the cheesesteaks
now. Did you see me on American Bandstand?

Re the CCI discussion: I'm a new car club joiner (2 yrs) and have found a
wealth of information from this list, the Chevy Chat website, magazines,
Hemmings, a bunch of other places, and CCI tech books. To me CCI seems to
be a major source of info and indeed they are a business. So use it for
what you can and go elsewhere when you want. Make your voice felt by
patronizing who you want and stop all the griping. If you must gripe, send
them a letter. That's what you do when you are dissatisfied with a service
you are paying for. It works. Let's keep this site positive and focus on
our purpose.

Bob,
I'd like to warn all parts dealers or private individuals not to accept any
Travlers Express Checks over nighted to them via Fed-Ex with the request to
over night parts back to them. These are fraudulent checks. Thanks to
UPS I have my parts back. They were the only ones to check out the
situation. Now with UPS leaning on the local police & FBI, they are now
going to investigate. This is all I want to say for now as I want this
ring put behind bars as I'm sure the other dealers involved in this scam
does too! Good luck to all,

Hi Bob,
Just want to let everyone on the list from the Baltimore-Washington
area know about the Lost In The 50s Car Club's 11th Annual Toy Run. The
show is scheduled for July 23rd at the Motor Vehicle Administration on
Ritchie Highway in Glen Burnie, MD. All proceeds benefit the Salvation
Army's Christmas programs. Registration is $10. The show runs from 9
AM-4 PM, rain or shine. Besides the $10 registration fee we are
collecting NEW toys and non-perishable food. There will be a big 50/50,
(Last year's was over $250 to the winner!), raffles, a Chinese auction,
and lots of family activities. Also lots of good food. In 1999 we raised
over $10,000 for this very worthy cause. If anyone wants more
information they can e-mail me or call 410-747-7478. Thanks, Bob. Wild

Editor's note. I have not heard the town Glen Burnie mentioned since I was
a kid in the Navy at Annapolis in the late 50's. What memories. I was
young, single and always looking for girls.

Hi Bob, just want to add my 2 cents worth after reading the latest list. I
think this list is great and have purchased a few parts at a fair price.
Doing this 57 hardtop, it is turning out to be a very pricey project. I am
to much of a perfection person, but I believe this is the only way to go on
a good classic. As far as CCI, I think their parts are as, priceing , as
cheap as Danchuk, or Paddock. I had all the parts figured out from all
three, and CCI saved me a few bucks. Quality, they are all about the same.
The parts guys have helped me a lot and in fact , went out of their way on
order mix up. Tech guys have been great. This is just my opinion, but I am
sure anyone can find fault with some companys. I would have rather bought
NOS, but real hard to find. My body shop guy has had no problems with the
sheet metal that was purchased from CCI . My only part was the door I
bought from a person in Wis by the name of Frank Johnson or Joslin, and it
was total junk!!! ($668.00) Well , that is my 2 cents worth but I really
enjoy this list and the people that reply. Roger Dorr in Iowa

Bob... for the list...

I have read some e-mail about buying and selling on EBAY. I have
purchased 3 cars from EBAY and all have gone extremely well. In each case
I
got the car for less than I would have paid from a newspaper or auto-trader
type publication. I learned a lot as well. Here are some pointers:

1. Always e-mail the seller and ask every question you can come up
with. NEVER let anything be assumed.
2. If there is a reserve... ask the seller if he will tell you
what
it is. There is nothing more frustrating than putting in a bid for a car
and
losing it because your bid was $10,000 less than the seller was willing to
accept. Some will
not divulge the reserve however.
3. Make sure the title is clear and that the seller is actually
the one who owns the car. I was going to bid on a 57 HT and I asked the
seller if it had the original engine.
He said he didn't know but would find out from the owner. I
never heard back. I also never bid.
4. Determine how you are going to get the car home BEFORE you end
up being the winner. Find out if the car TRULY can be driven 1000 miles in
the current condition. If not.. check with several auto transport
companies
and get estimates. Most have internet sites and e-mail and get back to you
in a day. You may have to add airfare for you to examine the car plus the
cost of the
transporter. Add these costs into the bid price for a final cost of the
car.
It is very expensive to buy a cross-country round-trip airfare the day
before you want to
travel!! Mine cost $1400.
5. If you decide to drive the car home, make sure you can either
use
the sellers tag or get a new/temp tag from your home state. Also make sure
you have insurance
BEFORE you start driving it home. Most big companies like State
farm have automatic coverage but it may not cover the value of the car. If
your like-new $15,000
car is in an accident or stolen on the trip home, the insurance
company might only give you $5000 for it.
5. Make sure the seller has a clause in the auction description
that
allows you to examine the car before paying for it. Bad Digital photos on
the internet and not-so-
honest descriptions by the sellers could cause you to lose a
deposit. make sure you can get your money back it the car is not as
advertised.
6. Determine how the payment will be handled PRIOR to the auction
closing. EFT, money orders, certified check, cash.. there are many ways of
handling this. I have
used Post Office money orders to buy an $11,000 car on EBAY.
Lots of $700 money orders... but that was what the seller wanted.
7. Use an escrow service like ESCROW.COM. You send them the payment
and AFTER you have reviewed the merchandise, and approved it, the service
sends the
payment to the seller. There is a fee for this but it is worth
it.
8. Ask the seller to e-mail you several photos of the car. Ask for
specific shots, like quarter panels, trunk, engine, interior etc. Most
sellers have access to digital
cameras or scanners. If they won't do this, be very suspicious.
Anyone who owns a classic car has a million photos of it!!! They can use
free photo repository web
sites such as PHOTOPOINT.COM to store as many photos as they
want.
9. NEVER NEVER NEVER bid more than you are willing to pay and NEVER
bid on anything you don't want to win.

Hope this helps.... The key to this and almost everything else in
life is communication. Find out EVERYTHING you can about the car before you
bid on it. As I said... I have been very lucky so far and am very happy
with
the deals I get on EBAY!!!

Dear Bob:

Thanks for your great sight. I look forward to reading all of the e-mails
you get. I try to print the ones that interest me to keep for future
reference. I'd like for you to let interested parties know that we are in
the process of restoring a 55 hardtop. I need some advice on one issue.
Our 55 is a 6-cylinder, which is not running. 3-speed overdrive. We are
debating whether or not to rebuild or to replace with a V8. I'd like to
get
some opinions from other Tri-Fivers as to what they would do. We would
like
to keep the car original, but are hearing some people say that people
aren't
looking for a 6-cylinder. They say that even if the car is #1, the
6-cylinder is a turn-off. We are restoring the car to keep, but probably
at
some point, we will sell and find something else to restore. Really need
some input on this matter. We are looking for any good parts out there.
We
need a lot so don't be shy about letting me know what you might have that
we
might be interested in.

Also, to help finance this project, we have a 57 4-door for sale ($8,500).
This car is a beauty. It is a solid car with a fresh 350 engine with mild
cam, 375 horse, new 350 auto tranny, new brake system throughout, original,
unrestored interior with only minor defects, nice chrome, Corvette rallys
and new tires. This car, mechanically, is practically all new. The car is
not rusted. Older paint job but still in good shape. We have receipts for
all the work that has been done. We are located in Kentucky. If anyone
is
interested, I will be glad to e-mail pictures. My e-mail address is
bobbie.butler@kyagr.com.

Thanks a lot Bob,
Bobbie Butler

Editor's note. Old Cars Price Guide says to deduct 10 percent from a cars
price if it has a 6.
