Bob, I have been reading the comments about CCI with great interest. I have

been and remain a member of CCI since 1984. I am also a member of Bowtie
and
have been since they started a few years ago.
I have been involved with Classic Chevy's since my first one, a 57 in 1957.
I
currently own a number of them and do some restoration of them as a
hobby/business for mad money since my retirement in 1994.
I have been purchasing parts from many suppliers over the years and I just
can't help but enter the fray with one more opinion of CC!.
CCI was a wonderful supporter of the hobby for many years. They sold parts
at
reasonable prices in addition to publishing the magazine. In my mind it all

came unglued when the "business" was sold to the current owners. While the
change may have seemed slow for the casual or occasional buyer those of us
purchasing a significant amount of parts could see a drastic change after
only a couple of years.
Price increases were subtle, and service deteriorated. For example I sent
in
a 55 treadle vac and Power Steering slave unit for "restoration" and got
them
back in nearly the same condition as sent. The treadle vac still had
evaporated brake fluid in the master cylinder and the outside was "as
sent".....that's not restored in my book.
The power steering slave unit was supposed to have a new stainless steel
shaft. It was not replaced but "same as sent". Now I will admit when I
complained to Joe Whitaker he did apologize and tell me if I would resend
to
them they would make it right. By that time months had slipped by and I
needed them for the car and so did the work myself......
I also handle the liability insurance for my local Classic Chevy Club, an
associate club with CCI and Bowtie. Each year the insurance was offered to
all associate and charter clubs for the same price until a couple of years

ago when CCI apparently decided they could profit from it and raised the
price for associate clubs. Bowtie on the other hand still offers it today
for
the same price as a few years ago regardless of the type of affiliation.
The
insurance is the same policy from the same underwriter........CCI is just
screwing those who insure thru them.
My local club is no longer affiliated in any way with CCI. We didn't even
send in the paperwork to simply be "listed" in the club directory. And we
are
a fairly large group with over 60 members. We are affiliated with Bowtie
however and will continue to be.
Having noticed the price increases over time from CCI I started doing some
extensive price comparisons about 3 years ago. It quickly became obvious
that
CCI was more expensive on nearly all items than others. And not just as
compared to Bowtie but C&P, Ole 55, Danchuk, Cars, etc.
A couple months ago I have a friend who wanted to put a continental kit on
his 55 along with new hubcaps and some other goodies. We checked the
catalogs
and called both CCI and Bowtie for prices. Bowtie was $1600 for the
continental kit, CCI was $2000........outrageous!. And since there is only
one manufacturer (in Canada) CCI is obviously screwing us all. They were
also $10.00 each more on the hubcaps. On small items of $10.00 or less they

were as much as one dollar higher and in no case were they cheaper.
I too don't care for the addition of Chevys other than 55-57. But I accept
the fact these cars have peaked and everyone seems to have expanded
coverage,
most thru 72. I even reluctantly voted in favor of our local club adding 58

thru 72 recently simply because it was the right thing for the club to do.
As I said I still belong to CCI. But I belong for one reason and one reason

only. They have such a large membership and inventory that frequently they
have parts no-one else has, but I assure you will pay big time for them.
The bottom line is CCI no longer has an interest in the hobby. It is
strictly
a "for profit" business. Sad but true. On the other hand Bowtie still
maintains a great "Club" and hobbiest mentality as evidenced by their
holding
firm on club insurance and club "affiliation". You can still call them
and
personally talk to Denny or Danny or anyone else at Bowtie regardless of
subject ....try that with CCI......
I must say the folks at CCI such as Joe Whitaker and others are still the
same helpful people, I don't want to criticize them in any way. They are
top
drawer. But they don't own the company and they aren't responsible for the
changes at CCI , that's ownership.
I too will terminate my CCI membership as soon as I see that I have other
sources for hard to find parts........I may do it anyway and just pay the
non-member prices.

Whoa there boys! Lets not get carried away with all this (unjust)
criticism of CCI etc. Having just returned home from their International
Convention in Cleveland Oh., I'd say you've got this all wrong. The
fun and comradery we had there was outstanding. I don't have the
numbers, but I'd say that in addition to a fabulous field of 1000
point judged cars, I can't remember seeing more 'cruisers' (non
judged) classics at any meet I've attended since 1986. What a blast-
Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, The Drags, The Local Cruise Nights, The
Fire Works, and best of all, The Participants. Taking part in
what is offered is better than sitting at home in front of your
computer and dreaming up things to complain about. Do you really
think that CCI , or Bowties for that matter, are 'capitalist ventures
trying
to suck every penny out of people' ? How long do you think these fine
organizations would last without a parts department? Probably would
have gone under back in about 1975! Do you really think that these
organizations are "afraid" of this list? This is just an open forum here,
with free expression of opinion; why would CCI or BTC want to 'plug'
it. Maybe at the same time they should beat the drum for Hemmings,
GM Newsletter, Super Chevy magazine, the Chevytalk internet site,
etc. etc. I do enjoy this 'forum' and contribute from time to time, but it
bugs me when CCI and BTC. which are run by first class Chevy guys,
get it in the neck, unjustly. -JimJ.

Original message:

Unfortunately, I lost all my bookmarks - they simply were gone one day
several weeks ago - and one of those was a site for clock
repair/conversion to quartz. Seems like the price for doing that was
about $35. I believe I may have gotten the web site off the Chevy
List. I would like to find the site again. Anyone, know the URL for
this site? I also lost the site for fender skirts/wheel covers,
several local Classic Chevy Clubs, plus ones I can't even remember. I
have devised a system so that if this happens again I will have a copy,
but trying to remember all that I had is impossible.

Thanks, Phillip

Bob - Surface 1 sent you a message and I hope he will clarify the last
sentence "and what has BOB ever done for 55-56-57 Chevy enthusiasts" or
words to that effect. If he meant that the way it sounds, there is not
enough space in his mailbox for the reply to that one.

Hi Bob-
Got a question for Fred Vail on the Beach Boys-why did Jardine and Love
split up? Couldn't they stay together and then they'd both be happy. I saw
the total original Beach Boys at Atlantic City back around '65 when I was
in
high school and they were Awesome-never forgot the experience. Too bad the
kids of today and big kids of today can't experience that.

Bob, as always, thanks for your efforts.

Editor's note. I checked the Internet for the current "Beach Boys"
schedule and they will be in
San Diego on Sept 16th. I may go see them. What a schedule. They perform
in a different town almost every day. That must get old after a while. I
agree, todays kids are missing some great music. I saw the Everly Brothers
in Las Vegas last year. I think they got mad at each other and split up
for a long time. So groups breakup is not uncommon.

We've seen a few listings lately about coverage of the Bob Ford list in CCI
and Bow Tie magazines. I know that at one time a Bob Ford list member was
planning to write up an article for submission to the national clubs for
publication. Was this ever done? From our experience, both CCI and Bow
Tie will print information if it is submitted to them. Sometimes, due to
publication dates, it takes months to get it in print, but if someone wants
to submit information, both national clubs list their addresses inside
their magazines.

Pam: If you have someone WIN an auction on ebay and they never follow
through
with payment ,you may go to EBAYS final value request form and they will
reimburse you the fee THEY charge for selling the item- its not in full(
you
still get charged the fee for POSTING the item) but it helps take the sting

out of being stiffed-
I think you only have 60 days from the date in ended - good luck !

I usually have great luck in selling my 55-57 parts on ebay as I dont have
many BUT they are always decent quality-
