I am the General Manager of a large East Coast car dealership. This so
called "CCI bashing" is
something CCI should appreciate. We spend thousands of dollars at my
dealership each month to
get our customers to give us feedback on our operations If you are in
business, you want to hear
from your unhappy customers. How else are you going to solve problems. If
you have an
unhappy customer, they will not be back to your business and you will not
make any more profit
from them. In almost all cases we can turn an unhappy customer into one
that will come back
again and again to our dealership. How we do this is simple. If we
caused our customer to have
a problem, we make it right with them. Most people are reasonable and
understand that
sometimes mistakes happen. Instead of an unhappy customer telling everyone
that they will never
buy another car from us, we encourage the unhappy customer to tell us their
problems. You
would think all businesses would want to hear from their customers.

Hello Bob and Everyone else,

On Monday July 10, my wife, my six year old and myself went down to our
garage and begin taking apart our 1957 Chevy 2 door, 210 sedan. What a
scary feeling. We plan to take every nut and bolt off and pull it off the
frame, I sure hope I know what I am doing. I bought this car about 15 years
ago and had it fixed up alright but it is now time to do it right.
I am going to start to look for suppliers with good prices, I have been
reading about CCI and Bowtie. I use to buy all my parts from Danchuk but
they charged me restocking fee when I returned a part. After 10 years as a
customer I felt that was poor business. The lesson I learned was shop
around. I have not bought from them since. I will buy from them again but
only when they have the best deal.
During the next year or so I plan to sale my whole original drive train and
purchase a one.
My first question of many to come it where is Bowtie could someone give me
a number or a web site. If anyone wants to email me other suppliers they
like or don't like feel free.
Thank you Bob for taking the time to bring all us Chevy fans together.

I have noticed some statements on the list regarding the quality of
reproduction parts. All reproduction parts ARE NOT THE SAME. There are
a
good number of individuals and companies making restoration parts. I have

been involved with 55-57 Chevrolets for 29 of my 44 years -- driving,
showing, drag racing, and just plain enjoying the hobby. And of course
retailing parts. I strive to sell ONLY the BEST QUALITY restoration
parts,
used parts and provide services. My philosophy is if it is not good
enough
for me it is not good enough for my clients. We provide QUALITY at a fair

price. All my parts are satisfaction guaranteed.

<< e the CCI discussion: I'm a new car club joiner (2 yrs) and have found a
wealth of information from this list, the Chevy Chat website, magazines,
Hemmings, a bunch of other places, and CCI tech books. To me CCI seems to
be a major source of info and indeed they are a business. So use it for
what you can and go elsewhere when you want. Make your voice felt by
patronizing who you want and stop all the griping. If you must gripe,
send
them a letter. That's what you do when you are dissatisfied with a
service
you are paying for. It works. Let's keep this site positive and focus on
our purpose.

Marc Glassoff
Heartbeat Classics (Escondido, CA) >>

Marc, it used to be (under the OLD ownership) that when one would send CCI
a
letter of criticizm, they would print it in the Magazine! Try that now!

Just don't hold your breath !!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT, you can be assured that
they
will print ALL POSITIVE letters!!!! They also used to print the current
active AND inactive membership in every issue! I have mentioned this to
them
about doing this again! You think they would listen!!!???? Most members
would love to know the current membership! Richard

Well, I have been reading everyone s opinion on the CCI issue, so here
is one more.
Yes, CCI is a business and no longer a club and businesses have to be
profitable otherwise they can no longer stay in business. They are a big
business, but thank heavens for free enterprise and competition.
People belong to CCI for various reasons; to purchase parts, get a
monthly magazine, belong to a local chapter, go to their conventions,
etc. When a company becomes that large, you have to lose something. That
something is the personal attention you get from the smaller, so called
"family owned business". The smaller vendors as myself and others on
this list, who own and operate their business have their personal
reputation to stand on.
As for us here at Fifties Forever; every phone call that comes in, ever
person who comes to our store, every box that is packed, and every order
that goes out is handled by myself or Mario, my husband. We know all our
customers on a first name basis, we know there families, and have been
with some of them through years of a restoration. We leave parts out for
them on a Sat night when they just realized they need one more item, we
explain how to install the part they just purchased because the
directions are so small you need a magnifying glass to read them, we let
them borrow special tools and used parts just to see if what they are
trying to do will work. This is lost with such an organization, as CCI.
They have employees, who just put in a days work and go home. We put in
double that because it is our own. We take pride in the products we
sell; our attention to taking and sending a correct order, and packing
it as if Ups were going to drop it off a high building before it gets to
its destination.
CCI has to have higher prices because their overhead is so much higher
than a small business. Yes, they provide lots of services, but price is
very important in the eyes of the consumer. Personal service is also
important but because of the volume of people they deal with on a daily
basis, you kind of get lost in the sauce after you place an order.
We have been a member of CCI for almost 20 years, and will probably
continue our membership for now even though we only read half of the
magazine. We obviously don't need them to purchase parts, and their tech
articles have become very hi-tech, but it still provides good reading.
In closing, I will tell all not to worry about CCI acknowledging this
list. We are very happy without them. This is a forum of free
information. They really don't have anything to gain from us. We all
know the work that Bob Ford puts into this list because of his love of
this hobby. Just look how this list has grown!

Thank you Bob, and all who took the time to read this very long opinion.
And that's my 2 cents!! Thank you, Donna

Bob,

Another topic....

I have been on the list for a couple years now and would not change a
thing.
Bob does a wonderful job with this... and is the super glue that keeps us
all together. (sorry for the analogy Bob...the best I could come up
with....).
I have a different kind of insight into the CCI topic.... I believe that
how
a company treats their employees.. so will they treat their customers. My
son worked for CCI for a couple months. He showed up on-time, worked hard
and really liked his job and I understand.. did it well. On a cold and
rainy day... my son was having trouble keeping his engine running in his
Camaro. While leaving the CCI parking lot... he had to "gun" the engine to
keep it running and with it raining, caused his tires to spin. The
president
of CCI just happened to be watching out the window of his second floor
office and promptly fired my son when he returned from lunch. He did not
ask for an explanation... just said he did not need people like my son
working there... and fired him. Since then there has consistently been a
help wanted sign out front of CCI headquarters looking for someone to
replace my son. The employee turn-over rate is high. In talking to other
employees there... Most feel like they can be targeted the same way. They
are not happy campers and I believe this feeling gets passed on to the
customers.
In contrast... my other son works for Bowtie/Late Great Chevy... Danny,
Denny, Bob and everyone else treat him with respect and see him as part of
the Bowtie family. They INSIST that he continue his college education and
work around HIS schedule!!! They have people working there who have been
with Bowtie since day one. I honestly believe that the care, understanding
and friendship that they show their employees also reflects on their
attitude toward their customers. If you want to understand mean.... if you
see Danny Howell at one of the Bowtie shows... take a minute to talk to
him.
He is one of the most knowledgeable and friendly guys you will every meet.
Don't get me wrong... Bowtie is a business... but they are more like a MOM
and POP business with people who get involved and want to make the customer
happy. CCI is more like a huge conglomerate that has lost touch with the
customers who got them where they are. As far as the cost goes.... If I
need
a part bad enough... I'll pay extra for it. It is more about who has it
stock and can get it to me fastest and at the best. Bowtie almost always
has the best price and has it in stock or will go out of their way to get
it
to me to meet my schedule. That's customer focused..not dollar focused and
that's the way I like it.

Bob, I sent this letter to Bobbie today.

David

Bobbie,

Yeah, well you can't drag race rat-motored Pro Street rods and they don't
look all bright and shiny alongside the billet this and billet that adorned

V-8s at all the car shows -- but if it is basic, reliable transportation
you
are seeking, look no further than the venerable Chevrolet "Stovebolt" six.

Check most price guides, and you will find that a classic restoration with
one of these engines discounts the value by about 5 per cent. But I can
tell
you that since I had the one in my car rebuilt and punched out some
.060" over some three years ago, the only problem I have encountered in the

entire time was a blown head gasket which I replaced with the help of a
friend of mine a couple of months ago.

Mind you, I do not baby this engine. I simply keep relatively clean oil in

it, change the points and plugs and drive - that is it. It has proven to
be
perhaps the most reliable, durable automobile I have ever owned in over 30
years of driving.

There is much to be said about this engine which started out as a
relatively
primitive unit with 216 cu. in. displacement in 1929. At that time it had
dippers on the crank for splashing oil up to the rings and valve train --
the
later versions with a pressurized oil system did not come along until after

World War II. The displacement was increased to 235 in the early 1950s and

the advent of the Powerglide automatic transmission brought about a switch
to
hydraulic valve lifters. Yours will have solid lifters with the standard
transmission/overdrive combination. The overall design, however, with the
distributor centered on the passenger side of the engine remained virtually

the same for over 30 years.

The engine was even used as the basis for the first, in-line six produced
by
old man Toyoda when the Japanese government talked the successful textile
magnate into producing trucks and later passenger cars under the Toyota
label
shortly before World War II -- a very little known fact. I was reading a
book about the subject a couple of years ago and turned the page to find a
picture of one in a museum in Japan which looks almost identical to the one

in the 1932 Chevrolet sedan which belongs to my friend Walter Kelley.

The engine is dead simple to work on, performance parts are still available

from several sources (notably Patrick's in Casa Grande, AZ) and with a
little
tweaking can be hopped up to produce over 200 horsepower. A splendid
source
of performance information is available in The Tri-Five Handbook by Jim
Richardson.

When my engine was rebuilt they installed an all new rocker arm assembly,
cam
bearings, pistons, rod bearings, mains, ground the valves and trued the
head.
The total job was around $1,300 with quality parts throughout. The only
other annoyance has been a leaking wick-type rear main seal which I have
yet
to replace. There are neoprene seals that can solve this problem but it is
a
little work to get to.

My car, presently configured with a split exhaust manifold can cruise along

the Interstate all day long at 70 mph, and when the little pushrods and
valve
train gets to moving that fast it functions as a psychological deterrant to

speeding tickets!

So, you can install one of those funky Jasper crate motors which the
motorheads can dress up with all the usual goodies that impress some people

but for my money I will stick with my little hummer the way it is as I have

grown very fond of it.

Hi Bob,
How Have you been.

In reply to what jimj@cujo2.icom.ca had to say,

"Having just returned home from their International
Convention in Cleveland Oh., I'd say you've got this all wrong. The
fun and comradery we had there was outstanding."

I too Attended the Cleveland Ohio Show! To All who Are CCI Members &
Receive the Magazine the show was advertised as Cleveland Rocks & Man they
weren't Lying at all. I Drove my 56 from Brooklyn, New York To the Show in
Strongsville Ohio. If you Include the hundred Dad Can we stop I have to use

the Bathroom Stops, It took me almost 11 hours to get there which was a
blast
in it's own. I still can't figure out which I enjoyed more the time I spent

at the convention or the drive there & back.
Jim all I can say is you are absolutely correct the show was outstanding.
If there's anyone on this list who is from the Ohio Club that hosted the
Convention for CCI, I'd Like to say Thank You for your Hospitality.
Your club made me & my family feel Extremely Welcome. One Particular Member

Jerry Z & Brother Joe Z went above & beyond the call of duty to make us as
comfortable as possible. I can honestly say in the few short days we had to

spend at the convention I have meet yet another person I will look forward
to
seeing at next years Convention.
As far as the people who represent CCI, JOE W & Crew they are a good bunch
of
guys. Yeah certain things may & may not be in their power but (in my
opinion)
try to keep in mind their doing the best they can with what they have to
work
with. I had a problem with a hood bird I bought at last years convention &
they replaced it for me at the convention this year.
I'm pretty good friends with certain people in CCI & did make mention
about
this list & Chevy Talk. Their reply to me was that, at this time they will
not be listing anyone's list in their magazine. I didn't want to over step
my
bounds & push my friendship to the envelope by asking for an explanation.
Anyway the Atlantic City Show will be coming up in a few short weeks so
I'll
try mentioning about them again.

Bobbie,

Concerning your '55 hardtop, when you see pictures or hear of owners
talking about their '55 Chevys, how many are actually restored originals?
By
"restored" I mean returned to their original state. Everybody and their
brother seems to have converted to 350 V8s, disk brakes, r&p steering, so
on
and so on... When I go to shows, I find myself skipping modified cars and
enjoying the restored ones. Also, you don't see too many 6cyl/OD
combinations; they were rare to begin with. What does it matter what some
book says your car is worth? Are you in this hobby for monetary values or
do
you actually enjoy these cars? I believe the time is gone when V8 powered
2doors were the only desirable cars. A little bit of variety is nice. I'm
seeing more and more 4doors with 6cylinders (and even 2doors with sixes and

vise versa!) and I think it is great. I'm partial to station wagons, but
maybe because I own one, and it's got a 6cyl/OD combo. But it's your car
and
therefore the choice is yours as to what you want to do.
