Bob,
Most transporters charge a set fee door to door. The farther you
are from a major local town the more you might pay. Since many drop
other cars off enroute to yours you really can't be easily charged by the
mile. There is usually extra charges for having to winch cars or for
taking spare parts with the car. I've had to trailer two cars and a
local broker has always been cheaper than the firms advertising in
Hemmings. Try the yellow pages. You'll find some won't do an east coast
run or west coast or mid west or Great Lakes etc.
Be sure to verify insurance - some actually say damage enroute is
NOT covered. You'll pay more for an enclosed trailer and if you demand
to be on top (to avoid trips from another car). Also the more leeway you
have on pickup and delivery dates the more likely the transporter can put
a full load together and keep the cost down. Finally ask if they have a
yard they can store the car in (for what fee) if they can't drop it off
at the specified address when somebody is there.

>From LA to Phoenix was $250
>From Charlotte to Phoenix area was $800 and from Memphis to Phoenix it
was $700

Greetings from Nashville, Bob,

As always, another great newsletter. As to the question from "Mark,"
regarding the on going battle between 'Beach Boys' co-founders Mike Love
and
Alan Jardine: I am not absolutely sure why the two had a rift.
I believe it happened shortly after Carl Wilson passed away in February of
1998. Carl was the most compassionate member of the band, to say nothing of

being a great lead singer and guitar player.

Carl literally kept the band together, 'on stage' as well as off. Mike has
always felt he did not receive the credit he felt he was due. He sued Brian

several years ago about songwriting credits and royalties that he felt were

due him.

Now, there is a controversy as to who owns the rights to the name, "The
Beach
Boys." Brother Records, their label, says they do, but that is a
corporation
that includes Al and Mike, as far as I know. So its really a bit crazy. The

attorneys are most likely laughing all the way to the bank:) I personally
think it has more to do with egos than anyone will admit.

As to touring, Mike and Bruce Johnston, and 'their' Beach Boys, hold the
corner on that. Alan Jardine's Beach Boys 'Family and Friends' are working
very little. That is a real shame as they have enormous talent and the six
part vocals are outstanding.

Brian Wilson's two daughters, Wendy and Carnie Wilson (two-thirds of the
popular group, "Wilson-Phillips,") are also in the group, along with Alan's

two sons, Matt and Adam.

As to Brian, he is on the road, with the "Pet Sounds" tour all summer.
Plays
Baltimore on the 13th, Philadelphia on the 14th, Harrisburg on the 15th,
Detroit on the 21st, Chicago on the 22nd. I recommend it highly. I'm
catching
the Detroit show! Visit BrianWilson.com for complete details.

Bob, if you could put up a complete listing of the upcoming Tri-Five shows
for July, August, September, that would be great. I know that you post
occasional shows in the newsletter, but a monthly reference list would be
great!!

Thanks to Keith Marang for letting me know about the Middle Tennessee meet
in
Nashville September 15 to 17.

There may be those list readers who don't want us 'old timers' talking
about
the classic music of the 50s, 60s, but there are many more who crave that
part of our youth--almost as much as the Tri-Five Chevys!

Have a great week!

Fred Vail
Nashville, TN

Editor's note. Fred, I would be happy to post a list of upcoming events if
someone would send it to me.
I encourage all clubs to tell us about their events.

Recently, there has been a lot of CCI bashing on this list. Up front, we
want to say we are supporters of CCI for many reasons. We joined CCI in
October of 1975 and remember back in 1977 when we attended our first CCI
Convention in Columbus, OH that the major topic of discussion was whether
CCI (or CCC as it was then) should produce reproduction grill bars using GM
molds, since GM was not interested in reproducing parts that old. The
debate was whether CCC would ever realize a profit on such a venture. Even
then, we realized that if a profit is not made, the venture is not
successful. When Doug Moorehead sold Classic Chevy, you can be assured that
he did so at a substantial profit. Is it so surprising that the present
owners would demand that a profit be made on their investment? If you or I
had the money and foresight to purchase Classic Chevy, wouldn't we demand
the same?

And, since the 70's, haven't we ALL reaped the rewards of a strong Classic
Chevy International? Can you think of another more recognized, collected
and valued group of vehicles? Super Chevy and Hot Rod magazines know that a
sure way to sell a lot of copies is to feature a '55, '56 or '57 Chevy on
the cover.

Parts and parts suppliers for '55, '56 and '57 Chevys abound. Whose price
do you think those suppliers always try to beat? Look through the latest
issue of Hemmings - there are special sections just for '55, '56, '57
Chevys - for sale, wanted, literature, parts. What other 3 years of any
make of vehicle can boast the same? CCI may have their faults (don't we
all), but they have done tremendous good for our special 3 years of Chevys.

As for tech help over the phone - give Tom Trainor, the CCI rep from
Georgia a call from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm Monday thru Friday eastern time at
770-466-7709. Tom is available on a first-come, first-served basis for
restoration questions. Or you can fax tech questions to 407-299-3341. Sure,
these calls may cost you, but isn't your Classic worth it? If you lose this
information, it is available every month on the inside cover of your CCI
magazine - it is no big secret.

We just attended the CCI International in Cleveland, OH. Joe Coluccio, Joe
Whitaker, Randy Irwin, Tom Trainor, Jim Bruce and many other knowledgeable
Classic Chevy people were in attendance to meet with us, talk to us about
concerns, share their tech knowledge and host seminars. Aside from selling
parts, they want you to enjoy your Classic, get involved in the sport and
have fun. Believe me, once you get some of these guys talking about Classic
Chevys, you can't get them to stop - so take a few minutes to check out the
stops on the Millennium tour and if there's one near you, bring your tech
question. If they don't have a quick answer, they should be able to either
find it or refer you to someone who can help. But you may have to be
persistent if you don't get an answer right away - remember, you have one
important question, but these guys have thousands of people each with one
important question.

And speaking of the Millennium tour - CCI has done coast to coast tours the
past two years. Sure, they want to sell some parts, but they also want to
meet with us, the Chevy lovers. They haven't made a fortune, I'm sure, by
taking the big red truck on the road, but they have met a lot of nice
people. When we've spoken with any of the guys, or read the articles in the
magazine about the tour stops, they don't care about how much they sold at
a tour stop. Their conversations are instead full of how much fun they had,
the people they met, the neat cars they saw. Our local chapter will host a
tour stop on Wednesday, July 26 in Mt. Airy, MD. When CCI set this up with
us, they didn't ask us AT ALL about guaranteeing numbers - they want to
come and see us and other Chevy lovers.

We agree with Marc Glassoff - as with any business, use them for what you
can and go elsewhere when you want. It's free enterprise - the American
Way. Stop the griping and write them a letter if you have a legitimate
complaint!

Bob, transportes charge anywhere from.50 a mile to 1.50 depending on an
open trailor or closed. I have a transporter from Indiana that hauls
convertion vans three at a time, then looks for a load to get home with.
The last car I bought from your list cost me $900. from San Fransisco to
the eastern part of Ohio which is about 2400 miles. If anyone needs
this info its called Choice Auto Transport 1-800-700-9649 the car
was here in 6 days.

Does anyone know how people that transport cars charge. Is it by the mile,
trip, or what?

BOB<<<<

I had my 1955 4 door shipped from Denver, Co. to Covina, Ca. 2 yrs ago
at a cost of $600.00. They charged by location. The closer you are to the
shipping distributation point the more you can save. I drove the car 400
miles to save $300.00 as the original location did not have a
distributation center and would have cost extra to have it picked up and
sent to the distribution center in Denvor. The car was sent on an open
hauler (BAD IDEA) to El Monte's distribution center where I could have
picked it up, but elected to have it shipped to my home in Covina as the
cost was very little.
If you do not care what condition your car will end up in then this is
the cheapest way to go, but beware, if there is any damage you will have to
take the shipping company to court and spend years trying to get anything
out of them as they have the lawyers and will use them. Also, as they
subcontract you may have to prove who did the damage and sue each one
individually. They have been shipping cars for a long time and know how to
keep from paying damages.
If you ship a car, make sure YOUR CAR INSURANCE will cover ANY damages
and let them hassle with the car hauler if there are damages.

You may have guessed that I did have damage, but luckily I was able to fix
it myself. If anybody wants to know the name of the car hauler email me
(marty28447@aol.com) and I will send it to you personally, but will not
publish it on-line for legal reasons.

Bob,

I have been reading your list for a few months and you've listed my '57
several times. I've offered some tech support to a couple of guys, but
never got replies. I restored a '57 Chevy BelAir 2 DR HT as a frame off and
spent 17 years doing it. I could not afford to go all out at once. I can
tell you that I have every part, it's function and location memorized. I
spent most of my childhood under old Chevys and Fords from about 7 years
old on. I always kept something running to drive on the county roads (when
Mom didn't know about it). Feel free to send me any questions on '57 Chevys
or '59 Fords. I've had extensive experience on both.

About your list, I have the following comment:

When I began reading this list I thought it was a very good technical
resource for the tri-fives. A true communication that "regular" people need
to help in their endeavor. After a couple of months, most of the content
turned to CCI bashing! I even got caught up in the frenzy and sent in some
complaints. I believe that Marc Glassoff summed it up very well. Lets get
back to positive discussions and let the Postal Service deliver complaints
to CCI. OK guys.

Hello Chevy Lovers,
I have a 1957 Chevy front seat for sale. I removed the old upholstery and
padding, and all the framework and springs are in excellent shape. I even
found a spare set of keys that were bead chained under the seat just in
case.
Anyways I am asking $500 or best offer for this seat. It came out of a
2-door Hardtop. I live in Stronsville, Ohio, which is 20 minutes southwest

Bob,
How is everything going? I want to thank you and all the great chevy
fans out there for all the wonderful information everyone puts out. I have
a question
about the 57 chevy car. If the car was a true Belair car it did have all
the
chrome on the outside around the doors at the top and also below where your
arm rests
and also around the back side window is this correct. I also was wondering
if the 210 series had the short piece of chrome on top of the fin if it was
a 6
cylinder engine, and a long piece of chrome on top of the fin if it was a
V-8. I
have also thought did the 6 cylinder cars in 57 all have the Chevy emblem
on the
trunk and all V-8 cars have the V on the trunk and hood? I see a lot of
cars that
people advertise for sale and they call it a Belair but when you look at
the
chrome it will have the Belair aluminum panel on the side but will not have
it around
the doors and side windows and will have the narrow 210 chrome below the
doors and
windows. I think sometimes a person will have a 210 car and just add the
aluminum panel on the sides, but they still need to change the upper door
and
window chrome to the wider and I believe trunk emblem to a V instead of the
emblem

I thought I would run this by you

Thanks again for the great site

Bob,
Here is a copy of a letter sent to CCI back in July 98 about
concerns with the direction that CCI was taking and complaints
about their magazine. I asked for a response but never received
one. Feel free to include this on you list to let people know
members have been complaining a long time but CCI is showing
little concern.
__________________________________________________ _______
Classic Chevy
International, July 24,
1998

To say the least I have been very disappointed in the past two
issues of the CCI magazine. The reason for my disappointment is
because of the inclusion of 1958 through 1972 Chevys. Being the
owner of a 1957 Chevy why would I be interested in 1958 through
1972 cars? What makes you think that the majority of your club
members are interested? Of what interest are restoration tips or
available restoration parts for these cars if you don't own one?
Anyone interested in these cars have their own established clubs,
magazines and parts catalogs. CCI even has a separate parts
catalog for these year cars

I have a feeling that the sudden reason for combining the years
boiled down to money. CCI is selling parts for these cars and it
is beneficial to CCI. If you wanted to expand the amount of
Chevys why not the Late Great Chevys? Why are you discriminating
against Chevys from the 1900 through 1954? Is it because there
is no monetary value to CCI in these Chevys?

This reminds me of the suggestion made about a year ago to lower
the amount of points on the judging sheet for cleanliness. Does
CCI realize this is the least expensive area to restore and
maintain? Did anyone ever think that just maybe the reason for
poor attendance at the nationals may be attributed to expenses?
Has CCI ever taken into consideration how much money is required
to restore a car to be competitive at a CCI convention?

People who drive their cars cannot afford to compete against the
judging standards set by CCI. CCI expects the cars to be better
than when they rolled off the assembly lines. For example,
points are lost for stainless trim that does not shine like
chrome or chrome that is not triple plated. How about body
alignment, hoods on the 57's never lined up from the factory but
you lose points if everything is not aligned perfectly. Not
everyone can afford to send their stainless out to be
professionally polished or have the car professionally painted.
Maybe bringing back the judging to reality may increase
attendance. Investigate why the drivers class has steadily
increased over the years. You will find its not cleanliness but
the cost of keeping the car in a competitive condition.

People have other expenses like college tuition, mortgages and
taxes. Cars are becoming secondary to these responsibilities.
Why should people lay out money for hotels and food for a weekend
show and end up with nothing at the end of the weekend. Cars
that take first place trophies at local shows don't even place at
CCI nationals. Which show would you attend?

Increasing the number of cars by expanding the years is only a
cover up and will not resolve the problem. People with cars from
1958 through 1972 will also get tried of the expense required to
be competitive.

Chevys from 1955 through 1957 are not included in any 1958
through 1972 magazine or club and I don't feel they should be
included in ours.

I have been a member of Bob' list since pretty close to it's inception. I
also have been a member of CCI for a few years as well.
I recently wrote the list about my lack of monthly magazines and
unresponsive to my tech inquiries via email.

I did an email form CCI stating how sorry they were and they FED-Exed the
last 4 issues of CCW to me. Those of us in business or customer service
know you are only as good as your customer's last impression. No matter
how many times you provide great service, the fickle customer only
remembers that last BAD experience.
I intend to keep up my membership, but I will, as a customer, let CCI know
how I feel.

Bob,

Some of my friends and I have uncovered somewhat of a controversy. The 55
Chevy that appeared in the respective movies, American Graffiti and
Two-lane
Blacktop, seems to have multiplied, well not really, but it seems many
people are claiming to own the original or one fo the two original cars.
What I know is this, the guy who built the cars for the movies knows the
cars inside and out, why can't he come forward and clear this up. Someone
on the Internet claims they have the original car, someone in California
claims they have the two original cars, and someone else on the Internet
claims they own both the original 55 Chev as well as the original 32 Coupe.
What's going on?

Does anyone one on the mailing list know anything at all about this famous
or infamous car? It has become quite a curiosity a
round our shop as one of
the persons claiming to own an original lives in my area and he is hiding
the car pending verification.

Can anyone help?
Marc.

Editor's note. This sounds like the "Bonnie and Clyde" car story. They
must have died in one
car, came back to life and got in another car, were killed again, came back
to life and got in another
car to be killed again.
