The 07-12-2000 distribution includes a question from "Mike I" asking about
how
to determine the rear axle ratio in his car. He mentions turning the drive
shaft
1-1/2 to 1-3/4 turns to produce one revolution of a wheel - and thinks it
should
be closer to 3 to 1.

You, Bob, replied noting correctly a method for chalking the tire and shaft
and
counting turns. What you neglected to mention (and what most likely has
Mike a
bit confused) is that the action of the standard (non positraction)
differential
is going to cause the one (jacked-up) wheel to turn exactly twice as far as
if
both rear wheels were to be jacked up and turned exactly the same amount!
This
is "old hat" to us "old timers", but can still sometimes cause confusion to
those just getting into the hobby.

Thus, if one accurately completed the chalk test as described - and were to
find
that exactly one and three quarter turns of the drive shaft produced one
revolution of the jacked-up tire, the computed ratio would be 2.0 x 1.75 =
3.5
to one. Knowing the common '55-'57 Chevy ratios that were available
(4.11:1,
3.70:1 and 3.55:1), we can pretty well conclude that this is a 3.55:1
gearset.

I hope this helps.

Anyone remember the magnetic drain plugs you could buy many years ago? I
found out this
weekend there is a modern version. I changed the tranny filter in my son's
Ford Explorer. In the
pan there is a big round magnet. It appears to have no other function than
to gather metal particles.

Bob:

I'd like to thank everyone who responded to my request for a decision on
whether to keep our 55 a 6-cylinder or modify to V-8. I think with our
plans to keep and drive, we are going to change to a V-8. My husband likes
to have a little giddy up in the engine. Also, the 6-cylinder we have now
is inoperable and is going to take a bit to get it going. With that much
investment, we thought we might as well have a little more horse power.
Everything else we're leaving original. I am in need of some parts if
anyone might have any for sale. Specifically, the driver side arm rest and
new flippers. I haven't been able to find these items. Does anyone have
any suggestions?

Also, we still have our 57 4-door for sale. It is a really nice car, but
the money is needed for the 55.

Thanks, Bobbie in Kentucky

Editor's note. I think someone mentioned it before but I think the springs
in a six were stronger than the ones in an 8 as the six weighed more. That
would mean that your front end may be slightly higher with an 8. Can
anyone confirm this.

put on another vin. Depending on your state, there might be a problem

Re the question about installing 4:11 gears in a '55-'57 axle housing from
a
6-cyl / 3-speed car that originally had a 3.73 gear-set (list from
07-01-2000):

My experience is that the gears will fit w/o any problems whatever. Be sure
to
follow the shop manual instructions and set the lash and tooth contact up
properly though - to avoid noise and wear problems. For the record, I think
you
will find that the original gears were actually 3.70:1 and not 3.73:1
though.

Regarding trans fluid leaking from a '57 Powerglide after storage
(mentioned in
the 07-01-2000 distribution): I note that another reader mentioned an
anti-burp
kit available from a vendor and also cited the possibility of a leak from
the
dipstick tube. Certainly these are possibilities. However, I think there is
a
real good chance that what is really happening is that fluid is leaking
back out
of the torque converter into the main transmission body after the vehicle
sits
for a considerable period of time. Try simply starting the vehicle about
once-a-
week and let it idle for a few minutes in Neutral or Park. If the leaking
stops,
you've identified the cause. How you choose to deal with it is another
matter!

This flow of trans fluid out of the torque converter and into the main
trans
body during long-term storage is not unique to the PG only, by the way. I
noted
it some TH 350 trans as well, though they seemed to take longer for the
phenomenon to show itself. Good Luck!

Hi Bob and everyone-
Does any person or dealer out there have one of those nifty anti-burping
check valves that goes in the transmission cooler line on the Powerglide?
CCI has them on backorder from the supplier who gets them from the
manufacturer who gets them from who knows where......and doesn't really
have
a GOOD delivery date on one. Does anyone have one stashed or know where
else to get one? Thanks in advance.

On Sunday, August 13th, Classic Chevys of San Diego will be putting on
their annual "Picnic by the Bay" car show. It will be held in downtown San
Diego at Embarcadero Marine Park North, next to Seaport Village (foot of
Kettner Blvd.), right on the grass next to San Diego Bay. The show starts
at 9 a.m. and is over at 2 p.m.

There will be live entertainment by "Big River" a band that plays a mix of
Rock & Roll and Country (they're really good!). Food will be provided by
La Mesa / Grossmont Pop Warner Baseball and will include hot dogs,
hamburgers, polish dogs and chicken as well as chips and drinks. There
will be a lot of raffle prizes and a brand new GM Goodwrench 350 engine
will be raffled to raise much needed money for our selected charity, the
Blind Community Center of San Diego.

The cost is a mere $15 if you pre-register by July 30th, $20 on the day of
the show. We will have over 300 show cars of all makes & models and there
are over 40 trophies to be won. If you need a flyer or more information,
contact Wayne Hartwig by phone at (619) 445-0846 or by e-mail at
hartwig@cts.com. For more information about Classic Chevys of San Diego,
You can visit our new website at clubs.hemmings.com/classicchevyssd.

Time is running out, so now is the time to get your registrations in the
mail. After all, there is no better place to be in the middle of August
than on the bay in San Diego! See you there!

To those members inquiring about Frank Botte: Bob Ford removed him from
this list because he had transposed information that I had given a
member on radiators to make it appear that the information came from him
instead of me. He used my response word for word but put his name as the
sender, thus you would call him if you wanted to purchase the radiator.
Bob Ford gave him the opportunity to explain himself but he never
responded, so Bob threw him off the list. This is why you no longer see
him advertise on this list. Donna

I think a lot of you people are getting the wrong idea here about CCI. We
are not CCI bashing, we are telling our real experiences about the terrible
service of a company that supplies parts to our hobby and hopefully a
newcomer to our hobby of 55 56 57 Chevy's may avoid this crappy CCI and
deal with a superior vendor such as C&P or maybe HARMON'S. The reason
everyone is getting tired of hearing about CCI is that there is a great
deal of people on this list that have been screwed over in one way or
another. This should tell everyone something about CCI. I buy mainly from
C&P in Pennsylvania, they have great service and better Tech help than CCI.
That is if you ever received any Tech help from CCI, I found most of them
total Idiots.

Never saw a complaint on this list for C&P.

After all it is hard enough building a tri-five, the crap from CCI is a
hassle we all can do without and hopefully we will steer a newcomer in
another direction to avoid the headaches we did.

That's what this list is for Right !
One of my high school history teachers used to tell us this all the time.

GUYS! Com'on enough is enough!!!! All this crap about CCI, Bow Tie, Bobs
list has got to quit. It is now and will completely destroy this format
that Bob has put so much work into. I have seen this happen in other
areas. The same things are said over and over and over. Just let it
die!!! Lets put this newsletter back to where it was a year and a half
ago when I first started reading it. I couldn't wait until I got the
next one. There was SO MUCH information and funny stories along with the
old triva. Now when I get one I have to scroll past all the complaining
so fast I know I miss something that is really important, something
about a 1955, 1956, 1957 Chevy!! Remember????? Just use this list for
what it was created for, to help owners and lovers of these Classic
cars. Let other newsletters, magazines and clubs do what they want. This
one is the best, DON'T ruin it! All this is coming from someone that
dosen't even own one of these CLASSICS!!!! Rick Keep4u@yahoo.com

Bob:
I would like to become a list member, having shared copies of your list
from Gene Otten, here in Lompoc. I am a long time enthusiast of Classic
Chevys, and my business deals exclusively with 55-56-57 Chevys. I won't
flaunt my upholstery talents, other than to say many of the top show cars
in the southwest have my handiwork in them. I have been a State
Representative for CCCI since 1983, and was one of "the seven" who authored
the Restoration Manual in 1984-85. I started Santa Barbara Chevys in 1977
as a Representative for NSRA Street Machine Division. With another friend
of mine, we started Far West Chevys in Santa Maria in 1996. I do most of
the work on my Classics and have put 450.000 miles alone on one of my '57's
over the past 24 years. I belong to both CCCI (#9496) and Bow Tie (#557).
and am concerned with some of your liist members attitudes. Yes, this
hobby has changed quite a bit in the last decade, some of it at the expense
of the little guy. Perhaps these gripers should also look at what a new
Suburban, Tahoe, or Camaro sells for new today. I am a lot more willing to
pay for and install a Mike McGaughy 605 box in my Classic , rather than
some cobbled up piece done in somebody's garage. The safety of me, my
family, and other motorists overrides a stupid decision such as this As
far as the Disc brake cost comment, better cancel your subscription to
Super Chevy if you are that sensitive, there are six companies that have
advertised complete set-ups in the current issue. This is a matter of
safety and convenience to some Classic owners. Come to think of it, CCCI
and Bow Tie are probably the only two sources available that you can still
purchase Caliper bracket and hardware kits for the "do it yourselfer"
today. I know neither club is perfect, but both clubs have made our cars
what they ar today through their efforts. In closing, I won't add logs to
the fire through your format on this issue, but would rather be a positive
influence with tech advise, etc. to further your cause
