Hi Bob,

In response to the issue of buying a restored car or doing it yourself,
cast
my vote for buying a car that's "almost" there and finishing it up yourself
the way you want it. EVERY classic car owner I know of ANY make or vintage
has a minimum of twice the car's value invested in the thing. Most have a
lot more. I built my car myself, but if I had it to do over I'd buy
someone
else's project and complete it my way. Let someone else have "the fun"
(make that read -- "the bills"). The one caution I'd give it to make sure
that the basic car (the big stuff) is what you want, and that includes the
paint. Little stuff you can change, but big stuff is a real pain if it's
not right to begin with. Check it out carefully. Nothing substitutes for
a
good eductation. Caveat ... etc.

HI, Bob. I have a question for you an the list members. I have a 57 that
originally had a automatic transmission in it. I Need to put an automatic
back in it for my wife. She has had surgery on her left ankle an can no
longed
work an clutch. So here is my question. Will any of the newer automatics
fit between the old belhousing mounts? I believe the mounting arm will
have to come off but I would like to keep it as original as possible. Any
Idea's? Thank you for this great sight Bob. I look forward to getting
this list.

Don9802@aol

Editor's note. A Chevy 350, 400, or 700R4 will bolt to your bell housing.
You may have to rear
mount the tranny and side mount the motor. You do not have to remove the
original mounting
but it will be a tie fit.

Price is right and anything sells- a good appraisal can be about $100 in
the
Boston area- (if you are around here I can help you out)!

Hi by the way, with today's high build primers and the paint going on
really
thick (more than they used to be) sometimes a magnet may NOT stick-like
they
'used to do ' back when lacquer was king. I find that sometimes people
overuse primers and clearcoats never realizing how thick they build.
Also if it was leaded a magnet may not stick either to LEAD.

A good appraiser (of which I am one) judges the quality of workmanship,
from
behind the panels where it can be seen, and overall condition-excessive use

of 'mud' is usually found on its own.

Just another FYI although that would have been a BIG mistake to buy with
that
markup!

Here is a question for anyone who can help. I am thinking about installing
air conditioning in my 57 B/A. Does anyone have any experience with the
units for sale from various manufacturers? Which do you recommend? Which is
more reliable? Which will not cause the car to overheat? Which unit can an
ordinary person install himself without losing his mind? Any tips will be
greatly appreciated. I have a 283 with 2 barrel carb, powerglide, singe
exhaust. Thanks

>From reading the following post about powdercoating at home I would advise
against it. there are much easier ways to get the same or better coatings
on your parts without heat, ovens, nitrile gloves, PRE sprays and lots of
expensive catalog items.

often we see 'magical' things in catalogs and 'new' systems but the best
is almost always the tried and true, old-fashioned methods. for example,
so-called 'home' powdercoating systems or special 'chassis; paint, etc.

nothing beats epoxy paint. it is chemical resistant and also fuel-proof to
a certain extent. you dont need to clean the surface very well (within
reason) as epoxy sticks to anything. it is also very hard. almost no other
coating is as hard unless it's some space-age thing.

they sell it at many paint stores and it comes in 2 parts and you mix it
together and let it stand about 10 minutes before use. dont mix up too
much at once or it can get hot in the can.

and away you go! no need for special 'chassic' paints. you can even get
clears.

here's a way that will make your paint last almost forever - use epoxy and
then a fluoropolymer coating. they stick together like crazy! you can soak
the part in some of the worst chemicals and nothing will happen to the
paint. dirt wont stick easily either. but this might be a little too 'high
tech' for most people here. ;)

by the way there are some great paints in hobby stores or catalogs such as
airplane or boat hobbyist catalogs that can be used on cars. there is one
that is used on planes that is gasoline proof and comes in clears also.
but some may not be high-temp. i forget the name now.

Bruce, I have used the Eastwood system since last spring. I HIGHLY
recommend it. When I had my 56 apart I coated everything that would fit
in my old oven.

There were only a couple issues with it:

First, the part has to fit into the oven. (Don't use your household oven
because it gives off "slightly toxic" fumes when the powder cures. I
bought an old oven for $50 and made a 220volt extension cord that plugs
into my dryer outlet.)

Second, make sure to use the Nitrile gloves they sell while cleaning the
parts, keep using a clean rag, and use their spray cleaner "PRE". If you
don't take the time to remove all skin oil and dirt, then the powder may
have some blemishes.

It is not very hard to do a good job. After using it once or twice you
will see how well it works. I can send you photos of me coating many of
my parts. You will see what a great finish it gives. Anything that would
fit into my oven got coated. A-frames, bellhousing, intake, oil pan,
clutch linkage, coil springs, grease fittings, etc. I even rolled up my
brake lines to fit in the oven and coated them Translucent Red! They
look great!

The only thing I was disappointed with was the "Mirror Black" color. The
finish was beautiful and perfect .... until I dusted it off with a clean
soft rag. It put small scratches into the finish. I had to re-coat with
another type black. It was on the flat panels beside the radiator, so it
was very visible.

One last word... if you don't like the color, just re-coat with a
different color right over top of the other color. Those are Eastwood's
own words. I did it and it works fine.

Hope that helps. Contact me if you have any other questions or for
photos of my work with it.

If you are going to connect an oven to a dryer outlet be sure the amp
rating of the oven matches or is below the amp rating of the circuit
breaker for the dryer. Typically, an electric dryer uses a 30 amp
circuit breaker with wiring of a matching rating. A range - burners and
oven - uses a 50 amp breaker and wiring. If you are buying an oven for
powder coating, buy a single oven, not a range, and that should not
exceed the dryer outlet rating - but always verify the oven rating!
You'll notice that the pigtail (plug) for a range and an oven have a
different configuration on the prongs. That is a dummy-proof system to
keep someone from plugging into a socket that has inadequate amperage.

Hi Bob! I recently read an article in the list on the original "American
Graffiti" cars. Clay Dailey from Southern California owns the original 56
Tbird that Susanne Somers drove. He is from Diamond Bar area. He and I were

interviewed for our cars ( I owned the Pink Cadillac in the Clint Eastwood
movie of the same name) on television stations out in Los Angeles.

Another subject - I cannot find the exterior windshield stainless that is
on
each side of the windshield for my 57 convertible. Does anybody have a
source
or know of anybody reproducing these? Please help me if you know of any
leads.

Bob

Need help. Does someone know the phone number for Richard Donovan from
Monarch Classic Chevrolet R&R in Belleville IL? I need the normal 10 digit
number as the 800 number says it has been disconnected. I ordered rubber
body mounts from him in April, He cashed my check on May 10th. and I have
called no less than 25 times trying to get the parts. Always a different
excuse. Has anyone else had trouble dealing with him? Does anyone know what
action to take when you have been stiffed?

Thank you!
