Prices vary across the country. Body dipping in Portland costs around
$1,200 - $1,300. Powder coating the frame about $350 - $400.

There was also a question in this post about rearends. A stock rear end
would be fine but if you hot rod the car go with a posi. 350 turbo and
700R4 are both good trannys

I noticed on ebay that someone had two 605 boxes with mounting plates and
that these were also mentioned on this list. These are 605 boxes that
HAVE NOT been modified for the 55-56-57. You can buy these stock (not
modified) boxes at your local wrecking yard for $30 - $45. I noticed the
bids were upwards of $135.00. Again BUYER BEWARE!

This relates to a subject that others have written in about. It has to do
with Convertible Conversions.

If you haven't seen it already, the October, 2000, issue of Super Chevy
magazine has a beginning article on converting a 4-door, '57 Chevy into a
convertible. No, it's not to be a 4-door convertible, but one with 2
doors.

C.A.R.S. appears to be the primary force behind the project and claims that
all or most of the sheet metal and trim parts are already available. They
say they're working on the rest. (I bet the stainless pieces around the
windshield, among other things, won't be easy to produce). Still, if they
can sell the parts and we can get more classics "restified," why not?

With the help of our local genius restorers we're just finishing a modified
'56 convertible, after 2 years of effort and money. I can't feature
someone trying to do a convertible on their own. There are so many
convertible-only parts it's hard to list them all.

Windshield trim, door pillars, quarter window components, pinchwell
mouldings, weatherstripping, courtesy lights, and don't forget the top
frame, top, and all associated parts. Even the rear seat is totally
different to allow space on either side for the top to retract.

Moreover, the X-frame of the convertible really limits your choices on
exhaust systems. We finally had to go with Chevelle headers to accommodate
our big block engine and there's just barely enough room for the stock
starter (a heavy duty racing type would not fit).

You can imagine that with a lot of engine heat running through the headers
the starter might be a little balky on re-starts. Just keep turning the
key until it kicks in. The Flowmaster mufflers we wanted would not fit
because of the frame design so we went with Dynamax. Sounds really great,
now, though.

It will be interesting to see how C.A.R.S. finishes this '57 project and
how much it costs them. I have some extra cast iron pivots for the rear
quarter windows, if they're interested in buying them. This is a
convertible-only part not currently reproduced.

I'd be amazed if they can do all this for much less than $50K. And then
the car has to be painted, upholstered, and a new top put in place. Should
be gorgeous when it's done, though. And totally solid and rust-free.

Guess what, 4-door owners? The value of our classics with 4-doors has just
gone up.

I know the 57 never had stock shoulder and lap belts in the front. But I
need to install them in my Belair four door sedan. Can anybody suggest a
good source of belts that look good, are functional, add have good mounting
instructions? I don't want to have to go to a junk yard and find some
belts and patch them in.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I was on the tri-Chev Chevytalk board and was told you have some
information
I can use.......

Im trying to find out information re my Sedan Delivery model 1508 that has
factory side glass and came from the Arizona area (maybe).

Possibly someone you know named "Delivery Dale" has one like it ??

The only info I have now is that Chev made possibly 300 each in the tri
years for a candy company in Pennsylvania and for the US Forest Service.
Whether this is true I dont know.

Do you have any info or the contact for Delivery Dale??

thanks

Peter,
I did some research on the '55 pedal cars last year as I wanted one too.
BUT the one I found was in fair to poor condition and cost $3000.00. Thats
right 3 Thousand, not hundred dollars.
I have a sales picture of several '55 pedal cars with the full size real
thing if your interested and will look around for the info on the $3000.00
pedal car that I may still have if your still interested.

Hi Bob-
Regarding the undercoating question, I have a 4 dr Belair that I got from
what I believe to be the original owner in Oakland, CA 15 years ago that
was
locally produced. The whole underside has undercoating on it which did a
great job of preservation. I am doing a 'frame-on' restoration and am
keeping as original as possible to be a semi-daily driver. I removed the
coating from only the front fenders and there was not a sign of rust so I'm
leaving the rest of the underside alone and will just spruce it up a bit.

Hi Bob - thanks for all you do for us.

Question for 55 Nomad buffs.

The trim 'spear' that connects to the 'eyebrow' and runs along each flank
has a 'groove' along it....

Is this groove:

(a) meant to be plain stainless?
(b) meant to be painted roof colour (assuming the paint scheme is two
tone)?
(c) meant to be painted some other colour?

Anybody help?

Many thanks

Stephen

I just purchased a Mallory Unilite distributor. It is electronic and it's

Yes I have done this, 350 w/HEI distributor. Bob is right, move the
engine forward, I didn't use special side mounts for this just the regular
side mount kit. I didn't realize at the time that I should move my radiator

to the 6 cyl. position, in front of the Radiator support. My stock fan is
very close to the rad. but doesn't cause any problem, with a short water
pump, it is just very close to the rad core, book spec is a distance of
.97".
Mine is less than this, within a half inch. I would suggest mounting the
rad
in front of rad support and using a long water pump with fan extension to
get
the fan within about an inch of the core for best air flow thru the
radiator.
I have a '57 210 2 dr. Handyman wagon. Contact me directly if you like, Jim

thanks Bob, I enjoy reading about all the things the members say, sounds
like
some fine autos on there for sale. I just wish I were 20 years younger and

could do all the restoration and things I once did with the 55-56-57 cars.
I
have had a bunch of them over the years, but still like to keep my older
restored ones around. I did professional drag racing for 18years in the
old
days when you built your own engine and fixed it from weekend to weekend.
got a lot of trophies and fond memories. of course I always ran chevy
engines, still have my drag car and my toe car which was a 57 Nomad, fuel
injected and all. keep up the good work guys, as an old timer I will
answer any questions I can, if I think it will help, Carl ct

Some of the list members that have been on the list for a long time know I
am an collector of
videos of the 50s. When this list was small I could send copies of these
videos to any list members
that wanted them. However with 3000+ members, I can no longer do that. I
have made a video that I call "The look and feel of the 50s". It is about
1/2 50s car information and 1/2 50s general information.

I have 2 copies of this video I will give to list members that may want
them. The first 2 people that send me the correct answer to the question
below will receive the video. Please include your name and address in your
response. I will NOT publish these e-mails on the list.

Sears at one time sold cars. What was the name of the car Sears sold and
what was the name of the almost identical car sold by the company that
built both cars?
