Bob - the car you ask about (Sears) was the 1951 "Allstate" - made by
Kaiser-Frazer and it was a retrimed "Henry J". You were kind enough to
send me 20 hours (!) of tapes and I am in the process of making a four
hour synopsis of ones I do not believe you have to send to you - I
finally got the ones I needed back. So look for mine and don't send any
to me
Doggone - I love this list!! And small block Chevs fit in Allstates
just as good as they do in Henry J's.

Best Wishes - Sandy Pierce

hi

no need to go through all of the following. simply get an HEI system with
the coil mounted on the firewall. besides the HEI distributor you would
need a high performance coil. using this method you have no clearance
problems as the distributor cap is the same size as original.
simply call summit or jeg's and they will help pick out what you need.

there are 2 ways to get an HEI system:

1) with coil under the distributor cap

2) with coil mounted on the firewall

2nd way gives you a normal sized distributor cap. 1st way can have some
clearance problems as the Distr. cap is much larger than normal.

by the way for 20 - 35 dollars you can get other distributor caps at Jeg's
or Summit that are really nice.

one of them is clear - you can see the sparks at night and supposedly they
look very nice.
another has the wires going out straight - each side has 4 wires running
neatly to the cylinders and no crossovers.
yet another has a very tough plastic that is different than the usual and
less likely to crack.

Bob,
Mario says the car was a Pacer, and the company was Allstate. He told me
this as he was pounding the blacktop mixture on our driveway. Is he
correct or just delirious from the heat?? Thanks, Donna

Editor's note. Donna, I think the Pacer was an American Motors car. List
members, please let
me know if that is not correct.

This relates to the Pertronix "Ignitor," electronic ignition system. Ads
in Super Chevy say, "Look stock, go fast." Also, you "never have to change
points again."

CCI told me over the phone that as long as the little electronic module is
hidden under the distributor cap and no one sees it, it likely would not
constitute a change for judging purposes.

I don't know if anyone on this list has tried one of these. I understand
that '55 and '56 are much different than '57 distributor. So Pertronix has
recently brought out a new kit for the earlier years.

Some of the unsubstantiated things I've heard about the Ignitor is that
they don't last very long when compared to Mallory and other types of
electronic ignition systems.

In addition to the Ignitor, Pertronix markets a high-power coil and special
plug wires to go with it. Interested in feedback on any or all of these.
Thanks.

Most undercoating was done by the dealer or a local company. It was
not a factory item. My parents bought a '55 conv in June of '55 and
the undercoating was part of the dealer prep. Obviously, the type,
thickness, and location of undercoating is going to be very variable
from dealership to dealership, and different in every part of the
country. My 4-door has the underside of the hood undercoated. Heavy
hood that barely stays up.

Just joined your list, and looks interesting. Two things: 1) I have a '57
Bel Air 2 door hardtop Show Car for sale. You can see photos at
http://classic4sale.tripod.com. Asking price is $33,000, but is
negotiable.
All other information is on the web-site. Thanks. 2) Can anyone give me
some
information on Classic Car Shows in the Tenn., Va., or Md., area of the
country? Thanks again.

BOB

Jim Lowe (no, not the one behind the green door) has been forwarding your
list to me for 6 months.
Your list is great, if you have a 55 or 56 or 57 Chevy. However, I own a
Ford and would love to have a list like yours for Ford cars. I have sent
a copy of your list to many Ford clubs and asked them about starting a list
like it for Ford cars. Everyone agreed it was a great idea to use the
Internet to communicate with each other BUT no one wants to do the list.
They all say it is too much work. If you ever sell your Chevy and buy a
Ford, please start a list for us Ford guys and gals. In fact if you buy a
Ford, I know I can get a bunch of people to help you find a bargin.

Bob. I thought I would pass on how much I like your list , I read it every
day . I just entered the contest to win the video tape and then I thought
you would be interested as to who reads the list . Kathy and I have a
plastic 57 and are just heading out to Florida from Canada driving the old
girl . All the best , BOB

Editor's note. What is a plastic 57?
