Bob, Do you know if GM built a 57 'Sedan Delivery' with glass in the rear
panels. I have been told that there were 92 of these cars built. To the
contrary, I have also been told that these cars were 'Handyman' wagons. In
fact, I have a friend that owned a 'Handyman' several years ago. He said
that it is just like the 'Sedan Delivery' except that it has glass rather
than steel panels. I would like to hear from some of our experts and/or
'X' spurts.

I also have five (5) BF Goodrich Silvertown wide white wall tires for
sale. They are 7.50 by 14 and are like new and, in fact, the spare tire
has never been on the ground. I would like to trade for a set of WWW
radials same size and condition or sell straight out for best offer. Thank
again Bob and always remember 'GOD is Love and more', Ken

Robert,
That '57 Chevy convertible X member is definitely worth something! It
can
be used by a restored who is trying to repair a rusted frame ( I believe
the
X member welded into a hardtop's frame gives you a convertible frame).
Definitely do not scrap it! I think I remember seeing either a repro or a
cleaned up original X member for sale for $900! I wouldn't sell it for
that
much, but note that what you have is more than scrap.

Jim/Carolyn,

I purchased the Pertronix "ignitor" and the high power coil about 3
years ago, cost about $75.00. I installed it in my 1955 235 CID 6
cylinder's distributor. I definitively noticed an increase in power and
as this is a 6 cylinder I need all I can get. With the label on the coil
removed and the Ignitor under the Cap you only have one extra wire that
could show that you have changed something. But in a thousand point
contest I'd bet some on the judges would be looking for that wire. This
ignition system is fairly well known, but if your not after points in a
contest it is worth the money. I am restoring a 265 V8 and will be adding
the Pertronix system to it also.
I must admit that I've only put 4,000 to 5,000 miles on it since it was
installed, but a lot of those miles were through a hot desert and driving
Los Angeles freeways.

i am noticing that everybodies answer to wether or not to buy a restored
car
or do it yourself, has answered that it is better to buy one already done

how about the love of the car and how much more you appreciate it after it
has your blood sweat and tears in it

there is no better feeling than driving down the street in something that
you can be proud of, or having your scrape book at different shows and
showing all the pictures to other car guys and see the reaction when they
see what you have accomplished yourself.

buying a car already restored is probably ok but so is going to a car
dealer
to get a new car but it is not the same feeling

try it and see

ALSO FOR YOU PARENTS THAT WANT TO SPENT QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR KIDS
BOY OR GIRL) THERE IS NO BETTER WAY THAN THIS. MY SON AND I HAD MANY GREAT
HOURS RESTORING OUR 57 CHEVY AND OUR 63 CORVAIR CONVERTIBLE. MONEY CAN'T
BUY THAT.

JUST ANOTHER GUYS OPINION

Editor's note. If Nader become president, could we make the presidental
car the Corvair?

It would be great to hear some of Carls drag racing memories. Carl,
please
share some with us soon! I have been racing on and off for the last 20
years, but seriously for the past 7. It is always fun to have people come

up to you that have raced in years past to share stories and tips. Many of

them don't understand the modern bracket and index classes. I enjoy
talking
with them and explaining how it works.

I urge all drag racers to promote the sport to young people -- keeps them
off
the streets and gives them a chance to compete in a much safer and
controlled
environment.

This is in response to Tom Prizzi's comments/complaints about his '56 Bel
Air project. Tom, I'm sorry that you have had problems with products that
were supposed to be designed for your car. I too am restoring a '56, ours
is a 210. I really do appreciate your comments on some of the problems
that
you have been having. I am particularly interested in the problems with
"Vintage Air". I would like to have our car air conditioned and am hoping
that there are some other options other than Vintage Air. Glad to hear
that your '56 is now on the road. Thanks again Tom!

Congrats to Sharon Nixon having her 57 in the Late Great Chevy magazine. I

opened mine up today and was suprised to see a car belonging to someone I
know. Only....... I thought it was a bad idea to mention the shop that
screwed up both of our paint jobs big time. Oh well. Fortunately you
can't
see any of the mistakes in the pictures, so hopefully I'll get my cars
pictures in there soon,lol.

Hi Bob and list members,

The '57 Nomad is back on the road after rebuilding the 327. Bob your
list and information gathered here was, and continues to be a big help.

Catching up on some of the lists I see Nomadman 55 asking about HEI....
I just installed an ACCEL billetproof electronic distributor and coil. It
is stock size
and eliminated the need to move engine etc to accommodate an HEI. The
magnetic pick up is
more reliable than the unilite. Although I have heard they work well,
should a dirt
particle get into the distributor cap it blocks the strobe light signal
and can be a bear to track down as the problem. This I have heard from
some other users. I believe in the KISS theory (keep it simple stupid!)
So I went with something less sophisticated and more mechanical. Set it
and forget it.

A recent posting had a member making a gasser out of a 55 with a 454
big block.
Please correct me if my memory has again failed me, but I don't remember
a 454 big block being available during the time of the Gassers class. Have
I been
away from the drag strip too long?

Someone asked about POR 15, I used the stuff on my headers. It
cures with heat from the exhaust. So far so good. Until I replaced the
rams horns with
the headers, I used it on the horns. It looked good and held up OK. Yes,
the stuff is
expensive. A pint of the stuff costs about $26.00, but it did both rams
horns and a pair of
3/4 length headers. A friend of mine used it on his cargo area floor in a
'56 Nomad. It
stops rust, and dries to a hard ceramic finish.

Just passing on some info. Comments welcomed. Always willing to learn
from others
experiences.

Bob,

I think Robert Willis is referring to the "Prototype Research Industries"
fiberglass "kit" cars. They build 55 convertibles and 57 convertibles.
They also sell them in a "kit" format that has you building it as if it was
a great big model kit!!
They are located in Campbellford Ontario Canada. Just call directory
assistance in that area for the phone number, they are suppose to have a
Web
site soon, according to the owner, David Carlisle.

Bob - the car you ask about (Sears) was the 1951 "Allstate" - made by
Kaiser-Frazer and it was a retrimed "Henry J". You were kind enough to
send me 20 hours (!) of tapes and I am in the process of making a four
hour synopsis of ones I do not believe you have to send to you - I
finally got the ones I needed back. So look for mine and don't send any

just as good as they do in Henry J's.

Bob,

I see quite a few ads stating "1957 Chevy BelAir 210 hardtop". I also have
seen some actual Southern California dealers advertised on your e-mail site
representing BelAir sedans. When you go to their site there is no stainless
above side windows or on windshield pillar in the pictures.

Buyers beware that there is no such thing as a BelAir 210 car. There are
three different styles, BelAir, 210 or 150. Not a combination of these. The
two and four door BelAir sedans had stainless trim along top side of side
windows and a wider piece along lower edge of side windows. They also had a
piece of stainless on the windshield pillar. This is in addition to the
easily added aluminum inserts and top fin long stainless.

The 210's had a narrow piece of stainless along lower edge of side windows
and none above. Also none on the windshield pillar, no aluminum inserts and
a short piece of trim on top of fin area. The stainless items not being
reproduced that I know of or side window and windshield pillar. When
someone
adds trim to a 210 to make it appear to be a BelAir, they usually don't go
to the extent of adding side window and windshield pillar stainless. To ad
these items correctly the interior must be stripped from car and you'll
have
to have a donor car for the stainless.

FYI,

Glenn

Hi Bob,

Wanted to share this: Yesterday (Sunday, Aug 6th) on our way home to
Bakersfield from Salinas, CA we driving south on Hwy 101 when I spotted a
CHEVY coming up behind me. Being the"Chevy Person" I am, I automatically
moved over into the slow right lane so that I could get a good look at it.

Just as I was telling my husband to wake up (he was sleeping while I
drove),
the Chevy shot passed me. It was a '56 Nomad, which really was of special
of
interest as we have a '55 Nomad waiting to be restored (another story). As
I
said the Nomad shot passed us, so fast all I knew for sure was that it was
kind of a light Burgundy (roof, hood and body & white tailgate), had a
black
bra on front and we think a Sale sign on it. My husband who was awake by
then, told me to catch up with it so he could get a good look. Let me tell

you, we were in our '96 Cadillac and I couldn't catch that Nomad! I was
doing
80-85 and pushing 90 when I decided to back off. I didn't think "trying to

catch a Chevy" would be a good enough excuse to get out of a speeding
ticket.
This happened between Gonzales and Soledad, CA so I did follow it for
quite
a distance.

If anyone knows this car or where it was heading, tell the driver #1 it was

too bad we couldn't let him know we appreciated his car, #2 that you've got

to let people actually see the car, if you want to sell and #3 he really
was
speeding! I'm still wondering if driving that fast isn't good for a
Classic!
