Thanks Bob and everyone else who took the time to help me with my
question. I got some different answer on only one part of my question. Some

people said that BSO #372 was power steering and some said it was Padded
Dash. Well I can say that from looking at my car there is a padded dash and

there is no power steering(YET). So one new question is there padded dash
covers out there for sale. Mine is in good shape but i would like a new
one.

Thanks to all!!

Hi Dana:

How are you?

I have a question and I thought of you? A guy that I work with had a
beautiful
70 oldsmobile cutlass and he was broadsided by an 18 wheeler that lost his
brakes
and totaled the vehicle.

He miraculously walked away with a scratch, literally.

He is now to replace his pride and joy. He is looking for a Buick,
Oldsmobile or
Pontiac from 1968 to 1972. Do you know anyone selling??

I got a 57 powerglide from a parts car that had been taken the road about 6

years ago. I drained the fluid after removing the converter and it was
clean.
The main front seal had been replaced and I figured that it had been worked
on near
the end of the car's days. I put it in my 283 project car and found that
although I have low and reverse, when I get into drive it does not shift up
into second.
Took trans out and got a rebuild kit. I read that if I have reverse then
the
pump Should be O.K. When I took it apart everything was exceptionably
clean-no
rust or pits but shiny clean. Followed manual procedures and replace all
gaskets, seals, springs, valves etc. Put trans back in car (on my back in
my garage no less).
Clutches were perfect also. Had a retired trans, guy look everything over,
but
still have the same problem. Check3ed and rechecked linkage-thats ok.
Can any of our members offer some advise? Specifically, when trans. should
shift up nothing happens-its like it's in neutral-then when I let up on the

gas it goes back into first. I'm pulling my hair out-not much there to
begin with! Thanks.

Editor's note. Check the governor.

A few years ago I was a an event and a Glass 55 was parked beside a 55 HT.
It appeared wider and the body lines were off a little., as was the track.
It was a nice auto but not a 55. I think I will stay with the Vette ,
resale is better and it is a real car .
Happy Motoring. BOB

Bob if I remember correctly the drive shaft on the '61-'63 Tempest was
unique because it had a "rear transmission" (engine - dirveshaft - then
transmission just in front of the rear end), do I remember correctly?

Bob, I can tell you from experience, It's a lot better to buy one already
completed than to build one! Although I've done both, it is fun to build
them! But it's more fun to drive them as soon as possible! If you want to
sell a 1955-6-7 classic car and make money, it better be a CAMEO,
CONVERTIBLE, NOMAD or 2dr. HARDTOP. You can usually make a few bucks. If
you haven't restored a car yet be ready to spend a lot of money, it is a
very
time consuming process but worth it in the end if your are not looking at
the
project as a money making venture! That's why you see cars that people
have
spent up to $100K on at car shows. Sometimes you just can't keep up with
the
Jones's so build the car to your liking, so that you and your family can
enjoy it. Louie

Good morning Bob,
A friend of mine had seen on Ebay a Friends magazine from Jan and March
1957 full of Chevy's for the year of 57 and it was meant for the Chevrolet
dealerships. How rare are these magazines, or how hard are they to obtain?
Its the first I have ever heard of such an item, but you do learn something
new every day.
Many thanks Bob,

Anyone interested in an original - not reprint - '55 shop manual, there
is one for sale on eBay. This is the one with rounded corners, price
on cover, and colored drawings for the powerglide. Item number is
415673172. Go to http://www.ebay.com click on "search", click
on "item number", fill in the above number, click on "search" (I think
thats what it says) and you can look at it. You have to register with
eBay to bid, but it's easy to do and free. Starting bid is set at
$6.00.

Kaiser Jeep built the OHC 6 for the first Wagoneers & Gladiators

Editor's note. Sandy is correct. We are all more informed to have someone

Sorry, but the response printed in the 8/22 issue of the list is not
accurate in
so far as the author states that the Pontiac 194.5 cubic inch four (1/2 of
the
389 V8) "...was used later by other GM divisions and known as the "Iron
Duke".

The 194.5 cubic inch engine was used in the '61-'63 Tempest only. The 151
cubic
inch "Iron Duke" was a rather conventional development of the 153 cubic
inch
Chevy four and shared nothing with the earlier Pontiac four. The 153 inch
Chevy
four actually shared much with the chevy small block V8 and with the 194,
230,250,292 cubic inch in-line six. The 153 inch Chevy four was introduced
in
1962 (for the Chevy II) and last offered in the 1970 Nova.

The Pontiac "Iron Duke" was introduced in 1977 in the RWD "X" body - then
called
the Pontiac Ventura. It was later used in the Vega and Monza.

Editor's note. I know at my age memory is the second thing to go and I can
not remember what was the first thing to go was but wasn't the Iron Duke
the motor GM had a lot of trouble getting to run smooth and quite. On
later models didn't they install a balance shaft to stop some vibration?

This is on one of our favorite subjects again: vapor lock.

A recent issue of Old Cars Weekly (Aug. 10, pp. 26-27) had an interesting
article. Readers wrote in to say the things they've tried and the ones
that worked. These included replacing old repair parts, especially things
like 40-year old coils with new ones, running return lines to the gas tank,
and insulating fuel lines.

One suggestion we've not heard of before is mixing in 10% diesel fuel in
the gas tank. So, if you have a 16 gallon tank, you'd put in a maximum of
1.6 gallons of diesel fuel. Anyone tried this?

I appreciate the recent input on the Pertronix Ignitor. Most people who
commented were in favor of it; a few urged caution. Jury's still out.

Thanks, Jim Wheeler, Tucson, Arizona 56Chevrolet@msn.com

Dear Bob

As my project 57 sport coupe has already blown out of proportion from my
original intentions, I am thinking of removing the body so I can properly
respray the chassis. Is this too large a task to undertake without
professional assistance? What are the potential problems? I have been the
told that if not done correctly the body may sag. Is this true? What
equipment is required:- if any? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

For those with modified vehicles, I would also like some advice regarding
after market fuel injection systems. Make, cost etc. I will be running a
mild
383.

Editor's note. I installed a Holly projection system on my 283. It is a
lot of work putting in but once
it is in and running it is nice to have. However, I think you can get
about the same results from a good carb. The biggest problem I had with
the unit was the return line poured out gas under such pressure that it
came out the gas cap. You will need to alter the gas filler neck to make
sure the pressure does not come up and out the cap, a big job.

Tom, I have used the Eastwood Plating system !!!!!! But Not with the Niloc,

as they didn't offer this at the time I bought it a few years ago. It
didn't
really last very long & I would suggest you HAVE it done, RIGHT !!! You
will be much happier with a professional job. The Eastwood system to me
was
just a quick Mickey Mouse way to get you plating done
