hi

found this on a newsgroups:

louis

This is from Dave Emanuel's book titled "Small Block Chevy Performance---

"Depending upon ambient air temperature, either a 160, 180 or 195
thermostat is usually installed in a small block. Although it is possible
to operate an engine with no thermostat, such a practice is ill advised
because the coolant will take too long to reach normal operating
temperature, if it does at all. In some racing applications, it may be
possible to install a 5/8" or 11/16" diameter restrictor in place of a
thermostat, but for the majority of street and race engines, use of a
thermostat is highly recommended. Bypassing--- However, reworking a small
block's bypass system can pay off with improved cooling. Under normal
circumstances, when an engine is cold, a bypass in the water pump housing
allows coolant to circulate enough to avoid a pressure build up when the
thermostat is closed, and to allow the thermostat to open properly. Some
engine builders have found that improved cooling efficiency results when
the bypass hole is plugged (with either silicone or a standard plug) and
four holes are drilled in the thermostat. Typically, four 1/8" diameter
holes are adequate. However, Myron Cottrell of TPI Specialties recommends
four .200" holes in a 160 thermostat for summer operation and four .080"
holes in a 180 thermostat for winter operation. This may seem like
splitting hairs, but an engine that's overcooled produces less horsepower.
The thermostat modification also improves block filling since air in the
waterjackets has an escape path. Even if everything in the cooling system
is operating properly, drilling holes in the thermostat and plugging the
internal bypass usually results in a measurable drop in coolant
temperature. And it may cure an overheating problem if the "wrong" parts
have been installed. Some race water pumps and aftermarket cylinder heads
(a passage in the bypass circuit leads from the block to the heads) do not
have provisions for the internal bypass. If the circuit is already
blocked, the thermostat modifications will cool things down. 1992 and
later LT1 engines and 1996 truck small blocks employ a different type of
coolant temperature control system. When the engine is cold, coolant flows
throughout the block and heads, but is essentially cut off from the
radiator. Only when temperature rises sufficiently for the thermostat to
open is coolant routed to the radiator.

Having typed all of that, Whew! (and I hate typing!) I personally
drill the thermostats in every car I own but do not block the bypass
system. Just four 1/8" holes in a 180 thermostat. I have seen
considerable drops in overall temps. It just seems to work more
efficiently at maintaining the rated temp of the thermostat. Try it!

Brian- Duh- we're so dumb. Didn't realize you were talking about an
automatic. We'd like to stay with a stick, just get it off the column & on
the floor where it belongs! We're both old dinosaurs & like shifting. My 61
Jag is a 4 speed with electric overdrive. If any of your car club buddies
have gone this route, maybe you can pass on the info. Thanks again, Sue &

Depending on the auction there is an entry fee; $100 - $200 plus a 5% - 8%
commission. The commission differs if you have a reserve on the car.
The
high roller auctions (Barrett-Jackson; Reno, etc) are excellent auctions for
a
positive sale. Getting a prime selling slot is important. Also when you
submit your car to an auction they generally want the title.

Good morning Bob,

could you please advise me the best way to go. I am looking at obtaining a
Chevy 4 speed manual transmission. Which is the better of the two, the
1958-63 Borg Warner T-10 or the 63-65 Muncie??? I would like to put it
behind either a 270hp 283 or a 348 tripple twin engine.
Many thanks for all your effort,

Bob,
I have a problem that maybe you or someone on the list can help me with. I
sold a 55' B/A 2dr sedan to a guy in Virginia in January. He sent the full
payment and said he wouuld pick up the car in 3 weeks. After 3 weeks came
and
went, he emailed me and said he couldn't come up at that time and asked if
I
could hold the vehicle until April. I told him it was covered and out of
the
way, so it was no problem. Well, now it's nearly Sept and I haven't heard
from him since. My PC crashed 2 monthes ago, so I lost all information
about
him.
The question is; What do I do? Can I re-sell the car? Is there any
process
to legally reposess the car? My biggest problem is the car is at my dad's
and
he is selling his house. I have to get the car out of there and have
nowhere
else to put it. I'm not about to pay storage on it. Please Help!!!
-Warren

Editor's note. Warren, please get local legal advice before you do
anything with the car.

I have been thinking of writing the list for a solution to the same problem

I'm having with my '57 handyman wagon when I saw the following: "My '57
handyman wagon has a habit of spewing and burping gas. When filling
it, the automatic shutoff of the service station gas pumps waits until gas
is almost at the top of the fill pipe before stopping. Consequently gas
will spew out over my tail light and bumper. Also, after putting the OEM
locking cap back on, some gas sometimes burps past the cap when driving. I
have not done any troubleshooting about this yet, so any suggestions would
be helpful.
Thanks,
Dave
Editor's note. Dave I had a Buick that did the same thing when I filled
the gas tank too full.
BOB" <<

I'm looking for a solution as well as Dave. I have begun only putting about

10gal. instead of filling it. Is anyone else having this problem? Is it a
characteristic of wagons? Please post any info. anyone might have regarding
a
solution, venting differently maybe? Thanks, Jim

Hello,
Bob, I would like to let you know what a great job you do on your list.

It is really nice to read and learn more about the 55-57 cars. Thank You
!!!!!!!!!
I have a problem and I was wondering if someone out there could help
me.
My name is Don, and I am in the process of restoring a 57 chevy Bel air 2dt

ht. The problem is with the powerglide transmission. First, I never drove

the car because the motor was blow up, but because the motor and trans were

out of the car for the restoration, I wanted to get the transmission
rebuilt
just to be safe. The transmission is at my friends transmission shop, and
he
was going to rebuild it. We do have the rebuild kit; however, we need all
the specs on the transmission. For example, we need all the torque specs,
clutch pack clearance, check ball location, and band adjustments, ect.....

Does anyone know of a manual, web site, or a way to get this information.
Please e-mail me or post any information that you could think of I would
appreciate it. One last thing that I would like to add is we are not sure
of
the exact year of this transmission. All we know is it is a powerglide.
Thank you
Don

Editor's note. The shop manual for the year of the transmission has a lot
of the info you want.

Bob:
Re: the discussion of the early 60's Pontiac Tempest. My brother has had
a '62 Tempest convertible tucked away in a barn for about 20 years. It
has the half-V8 and unusual driveline but is missing some mechanical
parts and is not running. Considering the problems and poor reputation
of these engines and drivelines, I'm wondering if a swap to a small
block Chevy and a 350 trans would be feasible and practical. I've never
seen such a swap; has anyone else? Any comments would be appreciated.
These were good-looking little cars and I rarely ever see them at car
shows.

Well I just had to get in on the tempest deal. I cut one of these cars up
for a super gas car. I also have one with a 455 and a 9 in rear with a
turbo 400. And I have an original one in my garage. On all three of these
at least they had the 4 cyl pont (half of 389). All three were automatic
cars with a corvair type powerglide transaxle. However my cars all have a
steel solid shaft about 3/4 in in dia mounted with 5 rubber dampers on it
inside of a tube from the flywheel to the torque converter which is mounted
in the rear with the transaxle. I have yet to find a rope like shaft in any
of these. And I do have one for sale or parts thank you. Also I have
a
55 2dr sedan 210 for sale less engine and trans needs bumpers tailights,
hood. has original seats etc. some rust in front of rear wheel openings
and floor however very buildable, no title as is 1750.00 sam email at

If any of you play Monopoly, and always wished you had more selection
for
cars, then now's your chance! Johnny Lightning has put out some 1/64th
scale
cars and trucks, with corresponding Monopoly game pieces in the packaging,
and there are two appropriate Chevy pieces...a '57 Chevy hardtop, and a '55

Chevy Cameo truck. The '57 is red, the Cameo is white, and the game pieces
are the zinc silver color in the shape of the car and truck. Others include

old Ford p/u, '32 Ford coupe, modern suburban, '70 Mustang fastback, Viper,

and several others. I found them originally at Wal-mart, but K-B toys and
Toys R Us now carry them...I purchased over $10 worth at K-B tonite, and
got
a free Gold '32 Ford car and game piece package for buying them! Might just

be a K-B / Monopoly promotional thing, I don't know, but you have to buy
more
than $10 worth to get it. they were behind the counter, and the lady gave
it
to me when I paid for them. Pretty cool! anyway, you can stock your
Monopoly
game with 8 or 10 different automobile game pieces now, instead of just an
open-wheeled car. Yee hah! :) That's all for now...

Hi Bob-
In response to Peter Hall's request for movies. I remember one from many
years ago which I have been trying to locate. It probably would help if I
could remember the name. It stars Rory Calhoun circle track racing a '57.

Not a Black Widow since part of the story line had to do with his low
budget,
not being sponsored. If anyone else is old enough to remember this movie
and
knows the title, I would also like to find it.
